Renowned mindfulness meditation teacher and best-selling author Jon Kabat-Zinn speaks at UCSD Medical Center in 2005 on the topic of "Coming to Our Senses", which is also the name of his book, subtitled "Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness". A pioneer in the application of ancient Buddhist practices to healing in modern medical settings, Kabat-Zinn expounds upon the value of "resting in awareness" not only to facilitate clarity in ourselves, but also as a means of relating to and healing the "dis-ease" in politics, society and the world. Recorded on 2/18/2005. [11/1999] [Show ID: 9375]

The journey to self awareness started for me 6 months back when I read John Kabat Zinn's book Catastrophe Living I feel privileged to be able to hear John Kabat-Zinn here in Liverpool. Thank goodness for the Internet. Like anything else, technology is a double edged sword. A blessing if used mindfully and a disaster if used mindlessly!

True Meditation is Separation from the body and mind . The Matrix is your own bio computer brain machine that keeps You in the illusion of being a physical Being in a physical world via the nervous system and the five senses. Meditation is putting the body and mind to sleep but staying Awake and Alert inside until you experience yourself as Eternal Spirit again.. (Guardiantext,org) Pass it on. I think that mindfulness meditation and mindfulness in general could be taught at schools with critical thinking skills at the same time, though they may seem a litle bit opposite. but they are not. we need critical thinking skills in this society of information and we need mindfulness in this society of materialism and blind to the mind.

I felt that too when I first saw Jon do a Google talk. But the more I delved into his work, the more I realized he's the real deal. I was always turned off of meditation by people like Deepak Chopra who seem to just want to capitalize off meditation. But Jon seems to be more heartfelt about all this mindfulness stuff. Plus he backs up what he says with hard science. And yet--despite his refreshingly scientific approach to it--he's managed to not turn it into something cold and analytical.

It wasn't that long to me. But I understand why some people would think it's too long. I liked your story in the beginning. That was interesting. Sometimes life leads us in a direction that we never thought we'd ever go. Some would say by design, at that there are no coincidences.

What an amazing video, thank you John for you commitment to the cultivation of peace! Some of these comments surprise me in lieu of the video . Are these comments mindful? I don't believe so. When being mindful, one is less prone to react, defend, or attack. Being mindful really has nothing to do with religion. I wager that our "happy moments" are moments of attention, mindfulness, and appreciation. Mindfulness being the key. Just my 2 cents! Happy Holidays!

Something about the sound quality that is not so good as the sound quality of the one who introduced the speaker. I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Kabot-Zinn. Seems to be very much in touch with the Aura of the self, as he so profoundly puts it: "...the aura of yourself..."

I can't see the problem with Steve Hickmans introduction... It's kind of normal and natural that a speaker gets an introduction - and if it's an introduction with a personal touch like here - I find it interesting most of the time. I did here for sure. Chill out... Is it really all about JKZ why we came here to listen and watch... or is it about mindfulness?
@Ramatganski
@Ramatganski 11 років тому
Yes, I see what you mean and what I meant was that there is literally the waking state into which one wakes up from sleep, whether abruptly or slowly - the very state I am in now and you are in right now. It's not as if without this "falling awake" sorcery we have just "falling asleep": let us remember we also do have "waking up". This is important because without due clarification as to how "falling awake" relates to normal waking up, coining this term is redundant.

I'm at a university now, and people are so spacey. It's disheartening to really pay attention to people. For example, I had this group project, and we met after class to work on it (in the computer lab). Instead of helping me do the project, they all used Facebook (one was also on a bodybuilding website). When I would try to encourage them to work on the project, they were so spacey it took me a few attempts to get their attention. Out of 4 people, I did all the work (over 30 hours). Zombies! :(

If you would like to understand more about mindfulness I would sign up to a 10 day Vipassana course as taught by S N Goenka, to really understand mindfulness you have to experience it, not try to learn it in an intellectual way. There is a universal consciousness which is shifting towards mindfulness.

The person doing the introduction was out of breath and seemed very awkward and uncomfortable so I guess maybe he doesn't like public speaking and he was rushing through it. But he had wonderful things to say and yes I do think he went on a bit too long. So it was wonderful that he said he wasn't into this and now all these years later he is into it but he didn't really connect for us how it happened and I don't think John was very clear about it either so I think most people walked away thinking what the h*** was this which is a real shame because it is really something good it just wasn't expressed well even though John has a very relaxing voice. Forgive the typose else I am speaking into this phone.

Very interesting speaker, as always. I would disagree on one point however, where Jon Kabat Zin states that meditation is not Buddhist. I disagree. You do not have to be Buddhist to practice meditiation, however, Mindfullness meditation was developed by the historical Buddha and taught as part of the path to achieve ultimate Buddhist goals. i.e. full liberation from attachment and aversion in the "empty state" known by some as Dharmakaya. Rigpa. Meditation without Buddhism is useful as it will improve a persons life, but in terms of Buddhism, it will not necessarily help the individual to overcome attachment or karma that is produced in this life. In some cases, all meditation will do will be to increase a persons efficiency at creating bad karma. An example of this is where a businessman working in a volatile and damaging industry is able to use meditation to sharpen his wits so he can optimize his business while at the same time increasing the damage on the people/world (and in turn, increase his own bad karma). Another example of where meditation is bad is in fuedal Japan during waring era. Japanese Samuria were trained in Zen in order to help optimize them as killers on the battlefield. Zen helped the Samurai to zone out and focus on the now and in turn kill many people while staying alive. Again, generally speaking karmically bad even if impressive from a martial arts point of view. This is why right livelihood is so important, as it guides people away from paths that are likely to cause bad karma. This is also the main reason why moral ethics and meditation are best when together, as when combined lead to liberation from suffering rather than temporary release, but then our body decays and inevitably dies and not even our new mind controlled success can stop our body dying in this world. I understand that Dharmakaya is likely hard to believe in if you have not experience, even briefly. But i believe Dharmakaya is. If so, please think deeper as other wise you may be leading people stray from the path. Still. I praise all you do as you do help millions of people looking for help.

Question. Was the first Hunter in full meditation, mind FULLNESS, when he or she crafted the first spear. ? May I argue that mindful doing preceeded meditation (formal) by necessity? And as we became "civilized", that sitting meditation may have grown out of the need not to go crazy from mindless doing? I'm going on here. And that only a few select, like the first Buddha were afforded the luxury of time to just sit?
