Chairman Fred Hampton was 21 years old when he was assassinated by the FBI, who coerced a petty criminal named William O’Neal to help them silence him and the Black Panther Party. But they could not kill Fred Hampton’s legacy and, 50 years later, his words still echo…louder than ever.
I am a revolutionary!
In 1968, a young, charismatic activist named Fred Hampton became Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, who were fighting for freedom, the power to determine the destiny of the Black community, and an end to police brutality and the slaughter of Black people.
Chairman Fred was inspiring a generation to rise up and not back down to oppression, which put him directly in the line of fire of the government, the FBI and the Chicago Police. But to destroy the revolution, they had to do it from both the outside…and the inside. Facing prison, William O’Neal is offered a deal by the FBI: if he will infiltrate the Black Panthers and provide intel on Hampton, he will walk free. O’Neal takes the deal.
Now a comrade in arms in the Black Panther Party, O’Neal lives in fear that his treachery will be discovered even as he rises in the ranks. But as Hampton’s fiery message draws him in, O’Neal cannot escape the deadly trajectory of his ultimate betrayal.
Though his life was cut short, Fred Hampton’s impact has continued to reverberate. The government saw the Black Panthers as a militant threat to the status quo and sold that lie to a frightened public in a time of growing civil unrest. But the perception of the Panthers was not reality. In inner cities across America, they were providing free breakfasts for children, legal services, medical clinics and research into sickle cell anemia, and political education. And it was Chairman Fred in Chicago, who, recognizing the power of multicultural unity for a common cause, created the Rainbow Coalition-joining forces with other oppressed peoples in the city to fight for equality and political empowerment.
“Judas and the Black Messiah” stars Oscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out,” “Widows,” “Black Panther”) as Fred Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield (“Atlanta,” “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”) as William O’Neal. The film also stars Jesse Plemons (“Vice,” “Game Night,” “The Post”), Dominique Fishback (“The Hate U Give,” “The Deuce”), Ashton Sanders (“The Equalizer 2,” “Moonlight”) and Martin Sheen (“The Departed,” TV’s “The West Wing,” TV’s “Grace & Frankie”).
“Judas and the Black Messiah” is directed by Shaka King, marking his studio feature film directorial debut. The project originated with King and his writing partner, Will Berson, who co-wrote the screenplay, and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas, who co-wrote the story with Berson & King. King, who has a long relationship with filmmaker Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther,” “Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”), pitched the film to Coogler and Charles D. King (“Just Mercy,” “Fences”), who are producing the film. The executive producers are Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, Kim Roth, Poppy Hanks, Ravi Mehta, Jeff Skoll, Anikah McLaren, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, Ted Gidlow, and Niija Kuykendall.
The ensemble cast also includes Algee Smith (“The Hate U Give,” “Detroit”), Darrell Britt-Gibson (“Just Mercy,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Dominique Thorne (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), Amari Cheatom (“Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” “Django Unchained”), Caleb Eberhardt (“The Post”), and Lil Rel Howery (“Get Out”).
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Sean Bobbitt (“12 Years a Slave,” “Widows”), production designer Sam Lisenco (“Shades of Blue”), editor Kristan Sprague (“Random Acts of Flyness”) and costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones (“Raising Dion”).
The film is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with MACRO Films, Participant and BRON Creative, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

When you watch the movie you see these men in their 30s...but the actual people were teenagers and in their early 20s. That makes it more powerful to me...and shows 1. How educated they were able to be that young and why "they" attacked the education system. And 2. How desperate the situation had to be for the youth to feel it dire to put their lives on the line. My God

A film right on time!!! Every story has an angle. And this side needs to be shared. It shows how young men of color was forced not only into chain gangs and other forms of punishment, but forced to become informants. Facing five years in prison, it's hard to say how each of us would have acted, especially in the turbulent 60's and when we were being chased home by mobs of people (yes, my sister and I dealt with this in our young lives) and other acts of violence. But sadly O'Neals choice led to the death of two rising leaders, something that he had to wrestle with until the remainder of his life. RIP Angels. Kudos to Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith, and the producers for sharing stories that need to be told!

I’m not trying to sound like a hater but he did not capture Fred Hamptons speech pattern he tried and he failed. He tried to sound like a stereotypical black man from the 60s and 70s and it was obvious he didn’t know how to imitate his speech pattern. There were times where I couldn’t even understand what this man was trying to say. When I listen to speeches from Fred Hampton the only time I couldn’t understand him was when there was poor audio quality. I appreciate the acting, the story, cinematography, and the overall message. Please don’t mistake my honest critique as hating.

I don't see how that was .... being a puppet. Try doing that these days and your bound to get outcries everyone on their identity politics. But instead, he was killed off. Congratulations to Daniel Kaluuya for winning the Oscar for "Best Supporting Actor." I called it the day I saw it at the movie theater. On a side note, I read that there is a petition to recast the part of King T' Challa in "The Black Panther" movies. If Marvel decides to do that, then the next Black Panther should be Lakeith Stanfield.

Daniel Kaluuya is electric and so is the trailer. Lakeith Stanfield expressive eyes 👌🏽this looks amazing. Plz release this in India too.

First India need to get rid of corona, but given buffoons at the top not remotely possible. Hope I am wrong as like u I want to see this in theatre so badly.

@@shubham3253 I mean, I understand the heightened concerns but theatres could open with 30-40% capacity next month. I mean gyms can open with so much touching, while it is health related, but theatres, play or movies are also a huge economy. Maybe its the movie buff in me, but I hope next month some deal can happen to open theatres. Experts have already said, we are living with this for a year, but social distancing is the way to keep caution. Let's see...

Probably because he was unapologetically a pro marxist socialist. Back then that was villainized in Hollywood Now hollywood is showcasing marxism and socialist icons in a positive light However it does pose the question will hollywood itself practice what they preach? I have my doubts lmao

Greenkidd for real bro! I feel like a lot of people are jumping on the socialism train, which is not a bad thing. But I wonder if the people who have the real power to inspire change like Hollywood, politicians, etc. are really about it. They gotta put their money where there mouth is and I don’t just mean a movie. We just gonna have to wait and see🤷🏽‍♂️
