Update* The Diesel Heaters are back in stock on Amazon.com >> amzn.to/47KUrMq This unit has a new “Level mode” that allows the heater to be adjusted based on a level of heat you choose, by toggling the keys on the pad. This allows the heater to automatically adjust based on the level of heat your set taking the guesswork out and the need to change settings in engineering mode. Like in the older heaters. Coupled with the Bluetooth app and this mode of control, no more need for thermostatic control and extension of the cable, But It’s still a good idea though. 🍻 Winter is coming, we wish you all a warm safe journey! FYI: If you unscrew the nose cone of the cigarette lighter plug-in end, there should be a an in-line fuse already in there so you should not have needed to strip your power cord to add another fuse. Also, if you want/need to add another fuse, it might be better to place it in-line inside of the heater case so there is nothing on your power cord to get snagged and damage it, leaving you stranded until it can be fixed. Seems like it might be a nice unit and easier to travel with it stored than the tall slim units. Thanks for the video!

@@ATEMOFFROAD Also note, you should not have the double fuse on that. Putting the ATO style one inline with the one built into the 12v adapter plug, changes the resistance of that circuit. Keep in mind, the way a fuse works, is by protecting from a short/too high a draw DOWN stream from the point of the fuse. It does nothing up stream of it (hence why your car/rig has a fusible link directly off the battery, and so on)

Great review, thank you! I have a couple of the older units and like them a lot, will be looking at one like this for my next purchase. One thing you should be aware of when using an infrared thermometer is that they work by detecting infrared emissions. Not all surfaces are equal in this regard. Shiny surfaces are notorious for lack of emissivity. Flat black and strangely enough water work very well. Do a quick Google on emissivity tables to shed some insight into their accuracy on various surfaces.

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 місяців тому
I’ll keep you updated for sure most likely through a camp video though. The other heater was a VEVor so I know what you mean by carbon buildup. I usually turn mine up on high for a about 5 minutes before I shut it down especially when I go to winterize it. Haha I’ve been run out of my tent before too when I first started using these. lol until I found out the thermostat is built into the controller, so extending the cable and having the controller in the heated space then allows the thermostat to see the space is becoming heated and throttles way down as it get closer to the set temperature. It’s More efficient too and solved that problem where you loose control. I do know you can go into engineering mode and manually turn down the fans speed and the fuel pump switch frequency, to by pass the thermostat to turn the heater down. But I never really messed with it. It just seemed easier to extend the controller cable. On the new heater the interface is improved, the mode with the bars that moves up and down allows you adjust the temperature up or down to a setting you like so should no longer need to have the controller in the tent , just wireless control from my phone. 🍻

@@ATEMOFFROAD I own 3 Oriental knock-offs and none of them are anywhere _near_ as reliable or well made as my _Eberspacher_ that they are trying to emulate! Main thing is the thermostat - the _real_ one goes into standby once set temp. is reached, it just shuts down and monitors the temp. until it needs to fire up again. I can leave it on all the time and it doesn't pose any threat to my valuables. Cheapo copies just pump diesel constantly unless you shut them off - as far as I know; do any of yours go into standby from a stat signal? I had to replace one of their motors and really struggled to find a matching part - the one I bought had different electrics from the one in the picture so had to be modified. It only worked for an hour then quit, but the pump carried on filling the burn chamber with juice - lucky I was there to pull the plug!

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 місяців тому
The new mode of control will allow you to have the heater outside, That could also be a downside as diesel can gel. Karosene can solve that problem. This new mode Takes the manual guesswork out and automatically adjusts the heater based on the setting you feel is most comfortable. There is always room for improvement and after using a few heaters this one solves a lot of those problems. For the future I’d like to see a taller box that has more space to fit all the accessories in. my only complaint really. I do remove the exhaust between uses as my packing space it tight, But it can be fixed to he heater with a bracket. Some people mention that the 12v connection for power is a problem which I do agree, it’s a standard 120v plug. However someone would have to introduce a totally different plug and really not know what there doing for this to be problem. If your passed that, any plug better than the other style I show is better as those connections like to come loose during transport and can cause under voltage faults. Thanks for watching 🍻

Yeah I have no control over that, it’s most likely the plastic they use on engines that can handle hight heat, but they could be listening which is good for new products. As far as controls go the modes seem very simple to throttle down to the lowest setting, no more trouble with that. which is pretty low. If need be any lower you may as well just turn it off. 🍻

Thee is no limit to the amount of time and money that can be spent to make you more comfortable using a liquid fuel heater. There is a reason this type of heater is generally so affordable. They make is safe enough. Most mishaps occur due to improper installation so a redesign by the manufacturer would only serve to increase the price..

That IEC 60320-1 C13 connector they use is extremely concerning. As there are many of them in every household if they own a desktop computer or various other AC appliances that commonly use them, it creates the possibility that a user could in inadvertently plug this unit into mains power with disastrous results for the unit and perhaps the user. As these would never pass CSA ANSI standards, they could get rejected if noticed by customs during the import procedure. Unfortunately, HCALORY is not the only manufacturer that is using these connectors for 12V, but hopefully they will get the message and change that. Just as you did due diligence by discussing the potential of adding a fuse, I'd recommend replacing that IEC connector with something like an XT60 or Anderson power pole.

Like the changes, especially the power supply. Sure would like the see the exhaust come straight out of the side, not much clearance for heat to dissipate from the exhaust unless using something like the steel table you have. I have all of mine wrapped, but would be nice not to have too do that! Unit needs to be recasted with exhaust the 3 o’clock position and air intake at the 9 o’clock position. I have the same heater as this one. I kept getting a slight diesel smell after about an hour of running time. I finally discovered the issue. As the heater warms up so does the fuel tank setting next to it. With the vented cap enclosed in the box it vents directly into the box. The suction from the fan picks up the odor and sends it out the heater duct. If I leave the lid open the issue goes away. Looking for a vented cap with a vent tube to vent the vapors outside the box.

is it really worth the extra $100 to $150 more cost over other brands? It has a plastic box, other side-by fuel tank units have metal boxes. Is it just the electronics or is there something more? While I am researching these for best use in my application, it looks like taller / tank over models are better suited for bolted down situations. These tank beside units would be obviously better for camping or moving around. Plastic case + fire = a worried me. Convenience of the electronics; is it really that different between brands.

I do a fair bit of higher altitude (above 5000' elev) camping. The MaxSpeedingRods (and some similar Chinese heaters) report to have automatic calibration for altitude. Does this one have that? Another question, my heater port in the side of the canopy has a thermostatic probe... Is there a way to connect an external thermostat? I plan to have the diesel heater outside the truck (on ground or mounted to the side) so if it is measuring the ambient temperature of the outside that would be pointless and essentially it becomes a manual on/off remote control heater instead of turning on automatically at night while sleeping. Nice video - thank you for the review. I look forward to your response.
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 місяців тому
The manufacturer claims the heater self adjusts for higher altitude, this would make sense as there are now two user friendly modes that can be accessed based on your setting. If you watch my winter camping videos I mention on the older heaters that extending the cable to reach the heated space is a must, because the thermostat is built inside the controller. And the thermostat automatically adjust the heater to room/tent heat you set and that if you Leave the thermostat outside it will cause the heater to run up to full load. Bringing the thermostat inside the heated space also allows the heater to throttle way down, saving fuel and power making the heater much more efficient and controllable . This mode is also on the new heater, unfortunately the cable is too short to bring the controller inside the tent or heated space. This new controller allows a secondary mode with no need to extend the cable, that if you are heating a space separate from the heater like a tint, new mode allows you to throttle up or down the heater regardless of where the thermostat is located. This new mode calculates the fuel and fan speeds based on elevation and outputs a steady controlled heat. We see this control in the form of green (low) to red (high) or hotter as the bars on the HMI. Hope this helps 🍻
@ATEMOFFROAD

Also with the new mode should no longer need to have the controller in the tent , just wireless control from phone app. 🍻
@MarkBuchanan3D
@MarkBuchanan3D 6 місяців тому
With Mode 2 it sounds like a fixed manual setting is the only option. If I wanted it to be about 50 degrees at night while sleeping I would be guessing on a setting based upon using it prior to going to bed and hoping it was close enough if the temp dropped or increased - correct? @@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 місяців тому
@@MarkBuchanan3D yes a more user friendly manual mode if you will , it won’t automatically adjust you would still need to extend the cable as previously mentioned. For myself it works because once the space is heated the heater is usually throttled down to it’s lowest setting anyway. I keep a carbon monoxide detector in my tent it has a built in thermometer, so I’ll manually adjust based on that readout for the night. Now what would be really cool is if the app had a built in thermometer and through the app it automatically adjusted. I’m still playing with the app to see if that is an option

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 місяців тому
I would think a full size RV/ travel VAN would be sufficient enough to heat for some perspective, there’s to many variables to really get a good solid idea Sq ft. How well it’s insulated, and how cold it is? For example I’ve taken my heater in 17F and heated my roof top tent to about 79F on low. Little to no insulation. It’s made to heat cars , vans, campers RVS and I’ve seen people use these for small shops and cabins. As for the smell, I get an occasional wiff of diesel usually at start up and shutdown when the unit is running rich. Once it leans out I don’t smell anything. Just be sure to keep the exhaust far from the air intake and you will be good. For RVS and campers I see people keep the entire units inside and poke a hole through the floor or wall for the exhaust so these heaters can be inside circulating the indoor heat which would make the heater more efficient VS my use to heat up a tent and I’m heating cold air all the time when In use. Always have a carbon monoxide detector close by i the heated space. I like mine because it also has a thermometer built in. I listed the link in the description box of this videos I Hope that helps and thanks for watching. 🍻

@@stevenlarratt3638 great set up sounds solid. I was curious about anti gelling additives and if you ever needed to use those in precaution to sudden temperature drops as this heater doesn’t offer any insulation surrounding the tank. I was told by the local gas station that there diesel fuels are “winter blends” where they have pre mixed additives to prevent gelling. This makes sense as they probably would not be able to pump the diesel in sub freezing areas. Thinking ahead I have not yet needed the use of additives, but I do move my heater from warm to colder climates so some stations may not have the winter blend available. Do you see this as a problem on your end? Should there be concern using an additive in the heater? What happens to the heater if the diesel gels? Any thoughts? 🍻

A large uninsulated pole barn needs far more heat than this can provide. There is a reason folks pay thousands to keep a pole barn a few degrees warmer, starting with insulation.

@@Wrongwayadventures that’s because the heater is meant to be inside and the intake and exhaust are meant to be plumbed to the outside of the heated space. I was thinking the same, whichever way you look at it is a real bad idea - even on something you made yourself that only you will use, let alone a general Joe public consumer!
@fromcharco
@fromcharco 6 місяців тому
Using IEC C13 C14 connectors for 12V DC when it's usually used for 110/230V AC seems like a really bad idea. For DC and this amount of amps there exists connectors like XT60 or XT90, so why introduce this kind of potential hazard.
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 місяців тому
I am very tempted to show what would happen in the case 120v AC was input into the mains. But In theory we can also predict what would happen. Remember the controllers control circuit is what relays the heater circuit to turn ON. The controllers control circuit is also low voltage/ low amps, Controlling a HIGH amperage heater circuit. I suspect if AC is applied the low voltage/amp control circuitry would take the hit before the possibility of the high amp heater circuit absorbing a load to catch fire. The circuit would be damaged like a fuse shorted, and in the form of a bad trace on the board. With the low current circuit damaged you would not even be able to turn the machine on with AC applied. It would sit there and wait. likey reducing any shock or hazards. You would just have a dead ☠️ heater. Ive also verified the pinout on an AC 120v cable in relation to the 12v heater connections pinout and this is what I have found. If connected, AC Hot lands on DC ground, AC neutral lands On +12v.
@Sydney268
@Sydney268 6 місяців тому
@@ATEMOFFROAD probably won't be dangerous isn't good enough - the metalwork on a faulty heater could easily become live if mains voltages are applied because there is no protective earth, and if you can plug it into the mains as easy as you can a kettle...someone will

I wish all diesel heaters came with a power supply. My Jackery for some reason cannot start my diesel heater on the DC plug. It's 15Amp max, but I think it requires up to 20A for the glow plug. With a power supply, the AC inverted power has no problems starting and running the diesel heater,.

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 4 місяці тому
It would take up some space, I’ve seen people use this heater inside there trucks usually for when they are parked but I suppose it would work just as good on the road. You will want to do your best to pipe the exhaust outside and make sure it’s not going to burn anything or leak any exhaust into the cab. It gets really hot, Consider having a carbon monoxide detector close by. 🍻
