The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast

FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt ranks his Top 5 Quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Klatt breaks down this QB Draft Class that he believes has as much top-end talent and depth as any group since the famous 1983 Draft of Elway and Marino. He breaks down what exactly makes Caleb Williams a generational talent before discussing the battle for the #2 QB in the Draft between LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye. Klatt then reveals how he evaluates the future prospects of 21-year old Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy vs two veteran collegiate QB’s - Michael Penix Jr from Washington and Bo Nix from Oregon.

Should swap JJ with Penix who is way overrated.. Caleb can be slightly better than Dak Prescott but depends on how clutch he is and I agree he is the top QB in the class.. Shedeur Sanders is better than the entire class though...Mahomes and Purdy are not that good and you see what they're doing in the league so all these guys have a chance to start..if I were the Cowboys I'd trade Dak asap and any pick within the next years to get Shedeur Sanders next year.
@tannerbrisbane6542

I think the most important thing with JJ is that he’s so young, he JUST turned 21, he’s so physically talented that if a team that has a bridge qb takes him and lets him sit and develop his accuracy and decision making for a year, then he could have a very good career. I think letting qbs sit may be the “formula” for long term success at the position. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Brady, Purdy, Rodgers, and we have only seen 1 season but Love looks like he can be something. Ever one of those situations is different but the main point is that none of them were drafted and expected to start their rookie seasons, obviously some did due to circumstances but still, the games and weeks that they sat and learned vs getting thrown into the fire probably have something to do with their success
@nickmoyer9112
@nickmoyer9112 2 місяці тому
Yeah I agree. The packers formula needs to be a model for the NFL. So many QB’s have had careers ruined by getting thrown in the fire. Couple of the most recent that come to mind, Sam Bradford, RG3, David Carr, Baker Mayfield. These guys should have had legit careers and got drafted by the wrong teams, irresponsible teams. Really believe all those guys shouldn’t have busted with proper development

The most succinct description of Williams is that he makes the easy things look easy. I hadn't watched much of him and decided to do some homework and throw on a USC game this fall and was just blown away at how simple everything looked. McCarthy's best attribute is his head; the dude's psyche is just rock-freaking-solid. If he gets a year or two to sit behind a vet, that team is going to be set for a very long time.

Love Joel's take on the quarterbacks. No BS. No agenda. Just tells it like it is from having been a quarterback himself. I have way more confidence in Joel than someone like Mel Kiper or Skip Bayless, who are self-promoters or simply ridiculous. I agree with all of his selections except McCarthy. He is climbing the draft boards and does have skills, but I worry about a guy who is so slight surviving when Aaron Donald slams him into the turf or Fred Warner lights him up during a scramble for more yardage. JJ is tough but he needs some meat on his bones. I wish him all success.

@MJCFilms
@MJCFilms 2 місяці тому
I'd say Penix or Bo Nix, though I think Penix because of his inability to run, his age, and injury history. Obviously it also has to do with where they are drafted, since your coaching staff and supporting cast can play a huge roll in whether or not you succeed, and we wont know that until draft day. But overall, I'd say probably Penix has the highest % of being a bust

I like to use Bill Parcels rules for drafting a QB and apply those every year and though it’s not perfect, it certainly increases your odds of finding the franchise QB. Top 3 are 1) 3 year starter, QBs need to play a lot and see as much as possible. 2) must graduate, your QB must be smart, no dummies! 3) Win 65-70% of his games played, you must have a winner! Bonus 4) no Hollywood types, you need a humble guy who works hard every day. A grinder! You go back and look at the 1st round busts and almost always 1 of those will be the reason. Not fool proof, just increasing your probability.

Caleb Williams does not have a back shoulder throw. Maybe he’s hiding it but he rarely throws it and it’s off when he does. That’s something. He’s also had some character concerns. Many saw him pout on live television, he doesn’t make others better, and they take all the blame. Guys like Penix and JD we only hear how great their cast is but we don’t look at the reverse, like how Penix makes Odunze better or how JD makes Nabers better and so on. CW continues to get every excuse on the planet for his inability to raise his teammates up. The reality is many great QBs raise the level of play of their teammates and not vice versa. If you want an exam of this look no further than Penix. Where was Washington before him? Dumpster fire. How was their QB play? Awful. How was Odunze? Odunze who? Same with Indiana. They were competitive at QB whenever Penix was on the field and incompetent without him. Someone is going to run away with the steal of the draft whoever drafts Penix.

Bro is overrating JJ and Bo Nix so much. Bo is the ultimate check down guy, can’t be anything more than a role paying qb that is dependent on having a good o line and weapons to not be completely irrelevant. JJ went from a turnover machine to a check down game manager. He never improved, he just stopped being asked to be that guy like they thought he was going to be. They didn’t ask him to do too much, so he didn’t and that makes him a first rounder? He’ll either get to the NFL and be exactly that, too scared to throw the ball down field, or he’ll be a turnover machine again I don’t see anything in between.

JJ didn’t have to show anything all year. That is a valid point, he also doesn’t have the receiving core as any of the other qbs. The game against penn state doesn’t help him at all. But the running game was insane at Michigan.

@robertcampbell8070
@robertcampbell8070 2 місяці тому
The Penn State game probably helps him with NFL teams, it doesn't hurt him. Michigan didn't stop throwing in the second half because they didn't trust JJ, they stopped throwing because every time JJ dropped back he was in danger (and in fact got injured in the first half). Chop Robinson was destroying the Michigan O line that game. Michigan knew they didn't have to risk their QB getting injured with absolutely nothing behind him to win that game because PSU couldn't do anything against the Michigan defense. And JJ was willing to do that to get the win. That level of maturity and team first attitude is going to go over extremely well with NFL decision makers.
