Thanks for the detailed review, Shane. There’s plenty to like about this product, but I’ve had a long history of problems with Knog lights….and I’m certainly not unique on that score. Your comments at the end about early firmware that was sketchy with arming/disarming doesn’t fill me with hope. I’ll sit on the fence for now and see how this plays out for a bit longer.

I hope the Mk.2 revision comes with a spoken voice alarm like "Warning Stolen Bike" to notify bystanders. Since the alarm isn't going to stop a bike thief from riding away with the bike with the alarm on.

I’m primarily interested in the deterrent potential. Setting off an alarm might be enough to deter a thief because it is obvious that the bike is protected beyond Airtags. And, if locked as well, it will buy me enough time to get outside the cafe or convenience store and stop them. Hopefully I would never need to use the tracking…

@the_1drummajor

The alarm is overall a better (from first glance) alarm (much more refined than even the Boomerang Cyclotrac V2) but the downside is that the alarm is not loud. 85 dB is annoying but if you want serious deterrent against at least a would-be/opportunistic thief, an alarm with a siren level of 110-115 dBA at 10 feet distance in open an outdoors environment is much rather called for. Yes there is the liability of hearing damage, but this type of counter-offense should be there by design as a wimpy 85 dBA alarm is going to have a less of a chance of deterring theft or vandalism. I know there's probably a lot of arguments with even just the principal of using anti-theft technology (namely analog purist that much strongly prefer solid locks, cheap throw-away bikes, and insurance), but no argument of theirs will convince technology adopters from test-driving this sort of technology out. And of course, this device is not meant by any means to replace any sort conventional bike security measures, it's just another added layer of security and you obviously can't go wrong with more security layers. Point is, this device seems more polished than any other equivalent piece of equipment I've seen or tried, but it needs to be even louder (at least have a dedicated alarm piezo/horn and a quieter local feedback piezo so as to not blast your ears off when just controlling the device). This isn't the only thing I'd ever wish for in a smart bike security transponder-alerter system, I can name a laundry list of specifications that would beat out any bike-oriented alarm systems out of the water.

Hi Shane. I’m thinking about picking one of these up but can I just ask if you had any issues fitting it under your bottle cage? I’m guessing you have Elite cages like me but I read a review that said they struggled to get it to fit on their bike as the supplied security screws weren’t quite long enough? Also are you still using it? Any other problems since the review video? Thanks for your time & keep up the great content.

Knog should be able to answer the one on screw length. I assume if it was a common issue they'd be supplying longer ones now. I used this in the car for a while. It drained about 2x faster than a standard AirTag. Other than that, all good.

@@gplama yep. I have that one installed. Much more stealthy and that’s why the Scout is not an option for me. Do you know if the anti-stalking features are still active on the scout? I mean of course they are highly appreciated in day to day scenarios. But in regards of releasing your properties in a theft-event they are really not helpful at all. That’s indeed the only reason why I’m currently looking for an AirTag alternative. Otherwise the convenience of it being inside the Apple ecosystem, battery life and overall tracking abilities are reasons enough to stay with the infrastructure of those Bluetooth enabled trackers. If only humans wouldn’t be humans… but than the need for a tracking device would stop as well as the stalking prevention features. In Europe we have the option of bikefinder(.)com. Your "rain cover" thing doesn't look as yellow as mine does? Yours is kind of a peach colour? I'm afraid here in the UK we still have firmware 1.1.2. My Garnin Edge 530 has an alarm. But, Garmin head units are also easy for a thief to steal or throw away. That makes the alarm OK as a vibration/alert sensor if you are in sight of your bile, but not much good if you are in a shop. Whenever I lock up my bike to go into a store, I always unclip the Garmin and put it in my pocket. (I have a cheap AliExpress alarm that does the same job and makes a much louder and more annoying noise)
