Java 8 that came several years before kotlin has the compared stream methods for collections, what's the point with comparing to outdated Java versions when kotlin itself encourages JVM 1.8 as compilation target?

Good question! Java development on Android to date does not support all Java 8 features, and those that it does often require setting a minSdk of 24, which is not feasible given the current distribution of OSs out in the wild. Since most of the original audience for this talk are Android devs, I focused on Java 7 for that reason. Java 8 streams are also, like other aspects of Java, awkwardly implemented due to backward compatibility constraints.
