I'm staggered by the endless critical comments on this video. I say thanks for taking the time to make it. Personally I'm watching it because I have 96 leaf modules and I'd like to make some packs for my electric kart, but I don't need the 2 cells in parallel, so I'd love to be able to repurpose them into a 14s1p. Thereby reducing the weight I have to carry on the kart from about 28kg to 14kg. And the others should go learn to read the comments before posting questions that have already been answered. Geez.

There is one kind of sardine can opener that actually cuts the folded seam an leaves a perfect lid with a safe edge. It also runs flat on the lid so the cutting wheel doesn't cut into the pack. It only cuts the folded seam, not the actual lid.

I was building an ebike and using these as my main battery. I wanted to go high voltage (84V). Leaving them in their current configuration made it too heavy and large to fit on my ebike. I wanted 24s. To get that from these without modification, I would need 12 packs. Moreover, 60Ah was way more than what I needed. Hence why I opened them and converted the standard 2s2p to 4s1p. As of now, I have them on my ebike and have gone 2500 miles and ~100 cycles to date with little to no sign of degradation on these cells.

I can think of several quicker ways of getting these cells out of the housing. Given the knowledge of the internals, if you have one, a table saw set to cut the bottom and top edges leaving a small foil to peel off. A similar method would to have a dremel mounted to cut away from the internal cells. Raising the temperature of the adhesive will help separation, 60 degrees Celsius should do it. Lastly, why would you want to take apart a functional cell, theres not advantage in doing that.

FlamingCuntLips Normally yes, however because I was space limited, the extra can was actually making the pack larger, volume wise, than what my battery mount could accommodate. If it works for you, keep it in the can, it's much better. For me, it was necessary.

Why haven't you tried to soften the adhesive instead of cutting and using a machete? Some adhesives are sensative to heat (up to 120 degrees) and some can be soften chemically with a solvent.
@skyBridgeConcept
@skyBridgeConcept 9 років тому
Yeah it was suggested by a few people here. At the time, I didn't know what temperature or chemical solvent to extract the cells. Moreover, the Machete method is so much cooler! Be careful of the heat though. It may damage the battery if you apply too much heat for too long. Think of all the Arizona LEAF owners. If I do anything to the adhesive, I would use acetone or some chemical. I am sure there are many other people now who can extra this much better than I can now.

Much as I don't like over-zealous Health and Safety fanatics, at 12:20 I feel you are dangerously close to slicing your wrist open with the wire cutters. You are pushing a sharp cutting edge towards the arteries in your wrist. I know from personal experience what it is like to slice the wrist artery. The blood pumps an inch into the air each time you heart beats. A BASIC rule of cutting anything is to push the cutting force away from any of your body parts. So in this instance you should have the aluminium box flat on the worktop and push the cutters down towards the worktop which is then taking the pressure. Your other hand can be steadying the battery. That is just said in goodwill. Thank you very much for an educating video, that and other Leaf videos have enthused me towards buying not a Leaf, but an e-NV200 combi which I see as a real car. I am going to the dealer tomorrow.

Supplies are on and off. Sometime they have a lot, other times, there is a drought. You can also get them from their ebay store. hybrid.parts. However, I don't think they are selling on ebay anymore. I would contact them to be sure. There are other sources if you look a bit. Maybe on electric car forums or the likes of it.

You should have spent more time explaining about the cells and the pack and less time explaining how to take it apart. How many of your viewers do you think are going to be taking apart this pack themselves? Almost none. We want to know how the pack works and how it differs from the packs in other cars.
@skyBridgeConcept
@skyBridgeConcept 9 років тому
PINGPONGROCKSBRAH The point of the video was disassembly. If you want to know about the pack, I suggest you go here: www.electricvehiclewiki.com/?title=Battery_specs As how it works, it's pretty simple, it's a battery and it works by having cathode and anode and creating a potential difference between the terminals. I don't think it's much different between other car batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are getting better by the day and obviously the newer cars will have better chemistry.
@PINGPONGROCKSBRAH
@PINGPONGROCKSBRAH 9 років тому
skyBridgeConcept I've already looked at that page and I know how batteries work. But there are substantial differences in the approach that Nissan takes to battery construction vs the approach that Tesla takes. These differences are in cell selection, cooling systems, pack balancing, safety systems, and many others.
@jeremyventurino9481
@jeremyventurino9481 8 років тому
+PINGPONGROCKSBRAH I agree. The Tesla battery pack is more of an ideal battery solution. The Leaf battery is not suited well for high temp environments, cycles poorly, and really should be water cooled to improve their life. Early Leaf packs experienced very short service life, and I'm not sure the newer models have gone to a LiCO battery. It's my understanding the Leaf uses LiFePO4 batteries. Most likely for cost reasons. I really wish this design was better thought out and designed to last. The NCR18650B panasonic batteries used in the Tesla are far superior to the Leaf's pack.
@HifiCentret
@HifiCentret 8 років тому
+Jeremy Venturino LiFePO4 is not about cost. I haven't found any information about what battery technology Leaf uses but somewhere I read the voltage was 403.2 volt, 48 packs with each 4 cells. That rhymes om it's parallel so 96 cells of the ordinary 4.2 V li-ion equals 403.2 volt. The reason Tesla last that long is only partly because "wet" cylindrical cells have better longevity than polymer pouch cells. The big reason is that normally Tesla doesn't charge cells to 4.2 volt/each and doesn't discharge them too deeply either (tells user it's empty way before they actually are). Of course that requires a large bank to have great apparent capacity but cells last much longer. Your phone would too but apparent capacity would only be half or so. You can charge Tesla to full 4.2 v/cell if you need the capacity but doing that regularly like your phone or laptop is a bad idea else Tesla's batteries will only last as good as your phones or laptops and have worn out very quickly. LiFePO4. I haven't seen them in pouch cells. But they're 3.2 v/each (charge to 3.6 v). They in contrast to ordinary 4.2 v lithium technologies have a very good cycle rate and longevity. Easily lasting twice as long or more. Could be used in your phone or laptop but then runtime wouldn't look impressive on paper - while in reality recoverable capacity of ordinary li-ion mostly used will quickly fade at or below capacity of similar physical size LiFePO4 - after which LiFePO4 would have the highest capacity in the real world. Another great benefit of LiFePO4 is that it's very stable even at physical damage and moderate overcharge - very difficult to get thermal runaway like LiCo etc. Mostly heat is because of the current that's flowing. Even discharging to 0 (yes, zero!) poses no safety risk. While it's not healthy for the cells they do not become dangerous - again in contrast to other types. Charge it very slowly and if not being low for too long you won't notice any capacity drop. But yeah. It's beyond me while Nissan is making such junk. That's because of cost ;) But also gives electric cars a bad reputation. I'd say if someone would make one with decent range (even just 3-400 km would suffice for one used to drive to work) based on LiFePO4 not charging them to full 3.6 - i.e. using a "Tesla" scheme on LiFePO4 - then you'd probably never have to change batteries in most cases as lifetime would be even higher than Tesla's LiCo. If using high current LiFePO4 they should even be able to charge in 30 minutes or less if you can find an outlet powerful enough.

Could you tell me the exact measurements of one of these modules? Weight, width, length and height? One module seems to hold 500 Wh, right?
@skyBridgeConcept
@skyBridgeConcept 9 років тому
Here is the specs: Battery module specs[2] Number of cells 4 Construction 2 in-series pairs in parallel Length 11.9291" (303 mm) Width 8.7795" (223 mm) Thickness 1.3779" (35 mm) Weight 8.3775 lbs (3.8 kgs) Output terminal M6 nut Voltage sensing terminal M4 nut Module fixing hole diameter 0.3582" (9.1 mm) Cell specs[2] Cell type Laminate type Cathode material LiMn2O4 with LiNiO2 Anode material Graphite Rated capacity (0.3C) 33.1 Ah Average voltage 3.8 V Length 11.417" (290 mm) Width 8.504" (216 mm) Thickness 0.2795" (7.1mm) Weight 1.7624 lbs (799 g) I don't have a ruler here to measure, but those numbers should be very close. Battery capacity depends on how to use it, but a safe minimum, assuming the battery is not too dated, should be around 410Wh. (3.8*27Ah*4 = 410.4Wh). For me I charge from 3.6V to 4.15V which gave me roughly 25-26Ah. The cell can be taken all the way down to 3.0V and all the way up to 4.2V so I suspect this is where the extra Ah is located. FYI, running the battery from 3.7V to 4.1V can extend your battery cycle life by quite a bit. hopes this helps

How much capacity has each cell?.
@skyBridgeConcept
@skyBridgeConcept 10 років тому
Each Cells are rated at 33Ah. These are from the Nissan Leaf Battery Specs: www.electricvehiclewiki.com/?title=Battery_specs However they were tested at 1/3C which is 10A current draw. If you keep it below that current draw you might get 33Ah from them when they are new from a single cell. Once you put them in series, the capacity goes down. I think you can typically get 30Ah from then once they are in series. Given that, my batteries were not new. Moreover, I drew around 1-2C (30-60A) from them. I also only charge up to 4.15V per cell and stop discharging when they get to around 3.6V. Because of the way I use them, I can get realistically 25Ah out of the pack.

Link me to NON-chinese LiFePo4 that have 1000 cold cranking amp for less than the price I am getting with these cells. Keep in mine the capacity. So far, these are by far the cheapest Lithium batteries that are LEGIT NON-Chinese quality cells. These are made in Japan. I had a few chinese LiFePo4 all claiming a lot of things coming from China. Guess what? They all failed way before the Claimed 2000 cycles and they are no way 1000A cold cranking unless you have 1000 of them in parallel which at that point is way more costly and way too heavy for most use unless you plan to use them in a car... Why don't you try to buy some of those cheap chinese cells and get back to me in a few years to see how they are doing. For your knowledge, I got less than 100 cycles on one before it expanded into something too unsafe to keep. The other one have lost more than 1/2 capacity before even hitting 200 cycles.
