We've done the budget, now it's time for the deluxe upgrade!
First of all, I recommend checking out the earlier battery upgrade videos. Then check out this text based guide to get more familiar with what is needed. github.com/dalathegreat/Nissa...
This video just goes thru the specific challenges related to the larger 62kWh, and what extra work that is required to make it fit.
Part numbers:
The part number is 55020-5SJ1B for ePlus rear springs, 2 needed.

@desertdan100
@desertdan100 9 місяців тому
So , I was thinking , what would happen if you installed a 62 KW battery into a 2011 Leaf? Could the area in the trunk where the original electronics for the battery sat be turned into a way to blow air into and out of the rear battery module for cooling? The Toyota Prius did something similar. It had an air intake in the cabin area of the rear seat. The first gen Prius used air to cool their battery. If 2 or 3 inch flexible hoses could be cut into the top of the rear of the battery pack, they could be fed up into the body behind the rear seat. A fan with an air filter could take air from inside the back area of the car on one side send it through the battery pack and exhaust it back into the car on the other side or possibly out into the inner fender or body on the other side. It might be possible to install a kind of blend air damper. This is all just a thought. I know there are other factors to deal with but the first gen leaf had that hump all the way across behind the rear seat when newer vehicles didn't.

Great video! 😀 Wouldn't mind upgrading to a 62 kWh or even a 40 kWh one, but that will have to wait until I won the lottery or something. 30-50 km of range on current 24 kWh pack will have to do for now.

@@chrisE815 My daily trips are a maximum of 35 km so I have learnt to live with it, and to estimate my range at current temperature and use of heater. The battery heats up after that giving some range back, but I usually try to borrow a petrol car in cold weather and obviously for all longer trips.

Great job, no doubt about it. My wife drives a 2011 leaf since Nov 2010. She loves it. However, it only goes 32km (20 miles) at full charge now. I don't wanna mention the range when A/C is turned on. I looked around at the battery swap options. You won't believe how this turned into a business. I called tremendous of a number of junkyards where they get tier cars from the insurance company or directly from the people. Leafs arrive without a battery. Some people just collect them and sell them over the internet and you can tell that it is not cheap at all. This became a good business. You need to do a great calculation that if the swap makes sense, Nissan offers a new battery if you are ready to pay $12,000 CAD if you are ready to pay 2011 GEN1 battery pack. My question to you is: As we all know, there is nothing wrong with the car and there is no need to buy a new car until cars would have full capability to have fully autonomous driving. Why Nissan just produces the new battery pack compatible with their older models; we all know it is simple as producing a laptop battery for older laptops. What do you guys think?
@DalasEVRepair
@DalasEVRepair Рік тому
They are probably worried that cheap replacement packs would go straight to stationary storage, so best to simply don't offer it. Also new car sales would be affected.

Has anyone investigated putting better air cooling on the Nissan leaf battery? I’ve read of ducted air con to the battery making improvement. Edit : found a video elsewhere showing 3D printed duct & hose to connect air conducting dash vent outlet to the battery isolator on floor at back seat. Unfortunately this made little noticeable difference as it was blowing air over the sealed battery pack housing, not through it. I’m thinking dry non humid air blown through the sealed battery pack _might_ make a noticeable difference if the battery-air heat exchange does not leave hotspots. Would be a very experimental process to test.

Great work! :) Some questions, will the brakes need to be upgraded as well, due to extra weight? And what about 'type approval' for the vehicle, will it be approved in the next semi yearly 'MOT'-test / EU-control with the extra weight and new battery?
@DalasEVRepair
@DalasEVRepair Рік тому
No need to upgrade brakes, e+ uses same as on old LEAF This depends on your county. I can point you to the Finnish legal paragraphs, stating that when using OEM parts this upgrade is OK. So yes it will pass MOT/EU control here! (just remember to submit the change in weight!)

Dala (or anyone), In your calculations, does it cost less to buy a ZE0 leaf and upgrade it to 62 kwh, or to just buy a Leaf+ (new or used) with the 62 kwh battery from the factory?
@DalasEVRepair
@DalasEVRepair Рік тому
In Finland it is cheaper to ugrade old LEAF (10k car + 10k battery), versus 35k native 62kWh leaf

Hello Dala I have two questions: 1.do the inverter handle the load and driving 400 km continuously without stoping ?? 2.do the battery needs cooling since the the old battery doesn’t have a lot of load but now if you drive high range there might be load and need cooling in summer?? Thanks in advance
@DalasEVRepair
@DalasEVRepair 3 місяці тому
1. Yes 2. No cooling needed. It wouldn't hurt to have cooling, but it works without!

I drive a Nissan leaf daily great wee car only thing is its lack of miles . In summer full charge registers as 128 -138 Mickey Mouse Miles estimate in winter Full charge registers as 117 - 122 Mickey Mouse Miles estimate what would the cost be for this larger battery pack as i find 95% = 446 miles estimate rather amazing Great video thanks for sharing Edit i think i have the 40 kWh battery just now . I'm amazed at the increase in miles for just an extra 22kw to make 62kw = +306 EXTRA MILES

Great video! Thansk for the parts numbers as well. A question, though. At 4:50 you said there may be some links to pics of the adapter plates that are sandwiched in. Would be interested to see a bit more about how exactly those were implemented. Not sure you had time to take extra pictures to share, but any that you have to help better visualize what you did would be really appreciated. Thanks again for all that you do for the Nissan Leaf community!
