In this episode of Test Night, Luke is testing out the NatureHike Cloud Up 2 tent with Snow Skirt in a lot of rain;
Will it leak during his tests?
Will there be problems with condensation?
Is this inexpensive tent really a 4 season tent or is that just marketing BS?

I have tested this tent extensively on our channel in all kinds of extreme weathers,as long as you pitch it properly this is a fantastic budget tent. I have seen it out perform an MSR tent twice its price. I have found that an additional guy to the rear window makes a massive difference too. And i have never had a drop of water in it in nearly four years of wet and windy camps. More often than not this is my tent of choice.

@@mike_outdoors4918 Yea, its a great little tent. I've never had an issue with condensation, but then I haven't got the snow skirt. Maybe that restricts its airflow.

I will have to check your channel and sub to it :) P.S. I've also got Cloud Peak 2. Tested in Alps at around 2.2 km height. Tested in a week-long storms on a shore of Arctic Ocean in Russia. Tested in melting snow and ice rain / wet snow conditions (this is where it is not performing well as of the lack of guylines on walls). Tent could also benefit from having a bit wider flaps above the doors - it is a bit ridiculous that when doors are open, snow and rain fall directly inside the tent.

I have the "skirtless" version of this tent and I've had it in everything from snow, to wind, to rain, to sweltering heat. It's a tank! And because I don't have the snow skirt, I've never had a problem with condensation. Recently I upgraded to the lunar solo for weight savings, but I will still use this tent in the future. Great tent for the price and stupid easy to use!

Same here. It’s not the thing I use the most, I like tarps better, but the only way it ever failed me was with frozen zippers after a night of freezing rain. I was dry, no issues, it performed admirably, I was just kinda stuck inside lol, it took a couple minutes to open it up :)

@Worleywoods
@Worleywoods 3 роки тому
@@drcsep I live in Florida, so not too far from the tropics. But to be honest, this tent shines in the cold. The rain fly (outer tent) really traps the heat in! I would hate to be stuck in that tent in a rain storm in the 80s or 90s... You'd cook! You can take the fly off and simply use the inner tent... But you'd have no protection from the rain since the inner is just mesh. The tent does have a small vent near the head, but it never really did any good. Last year year while backpacking in Colorado, it was unseasonably warm. During the day, it would get up into the sixties and I felt like I was cooking inside that tent. Even when the wind picked up and I tried to open the vent and the vestabule it was still hot!
@PaulSchortemeyer
@PaulSchortemeyer 3 роки тому
You missed the point I think - it is LIGHTWEIGHT. Remarkably so. It is also very inexpensive and very waterproof. Tie out all the points and it's amazing in very challenging conditions. Your average snow and wind included. When conditions allow crack the door for better venting... zippers are handy that way (-:

I've had the Naturehike Cloud Up 2 without the skirt for three seasons now, and am super happy with it. I can vouch for it's waterproofness, I've had numerous experiences with large amounts of rain falling on it. Including one night during a thunderstorm in France where I had at least 3 inches of rain during one night. Literally woke up in the middle of a small creek the morning after, but not one single drop had gotten inside of the tent. Can agree with you on the zippers though. It's not top notch exactly. I've had some problems with the zipper of the rain-fly getting caught up.

Love my naturehike tent, had the exact same tent out regularly through our scottish autumn & early winter, its been through F9 storms, day after day of rain, 5 inches of snow & has never had a single issue. When you actually run the guys out correctly & guy up the vent its a very stable tent that keeps you warm & dry with the added bonus that it weights very little making it great for low load long hikes & multi day ventures.

There are 2 lines attached to the outer flysheet on each side that you didn't use. These two lines pull the flysheet away from the inner mesh and allow ventilation. I am suprised you didn't set it up as intended by the manufacturer. Btw. there is a new version on the market: Cloud Up 2 Upgraded in various colors with or without snow skirts.

The footage at Summit or Nothing is incredible and I would like to see the tent performing as good in your channel (which I am a long time subscriber of). Great review, thank you! I have a different NatureHike tent: the VIK 1. They also claim that it is four season. I haven't had the opportunity to test the four season claim, but I have had the VIK 1 in really severe wind and in rain, and it performed amazingly well. I prefer the VIK 1 to the Cloud Up as it pitches all-in-one, which is useful in rainy weather.

I have 3 person, skirtless version as well. Absolutely love the tent whenever we go backpacking. It does develop lot of condensation even without skirt. However, with guylines and proper stakes, they do not touch inner tent. It does have a weak cross pole "holder". Both ends developed holes by poles when tent was under 60-80 mph winds for 3 days. We stitched with more durable nylon lashing to cover the holes. Excellent tent for the money.

I have the cloud up 3 and it performs great for my needs! I don't get much in the way of snow so I can't attest to that, but I've used this tent in every possible weather event holds up great. I agree on the condensation. You have to stake it out to get the air flow, there is usually a moisture film on the walls. I've never had a problem with it dripping off. This is by far the best "budget" I've ever owned.

That looks like the old stock version, the updated Cloud Up 2 (and 3) versions for the last few of years (I've had mine since end of 2018) have a ventilation port at the front AND back and get great airflow when you want it. I've tested mine in New Zealand winter, and it was great with the snow flaps. I've also used it in hot Western Australia - I put the skirts up out of the way when it was hot, down when blocking the wind. In strong wind where I couldn't stake it down because it was on soft sand, the snow flaps worked great for having sand piled on top of them. The skirts being down changed the high wind behaviour a lot, when it wasn't whipping between tent and fly, it stands solid against the wind. I wouldn't take it up Everest, but my experience is in line with others who have the tent.

hi luke, that tent works well here in the philippines, i have that tent and i never experience some leakage on that even on rain and wind, i just tie the guy lines on the fly to secure from windy conditions, also, condensation is also minimal because of the ventalation, the fly on the 3 season version provides more airflow., :)

I have the non snow skirt one. Never had a leak. Have taken it out in snow, I did do an a frame tarp over top, since I was stealth camping. But that really helped with the snow. I did add a sew on velcro door that covers the major open area of mesh. Overall I love the tent. Add in a uco candle and a warm sleeping bag and sleep great. The vestibule is great for cooking in as well from the warmth of the bag. Not bad for a knock off tent. Quality for the price!

I can see winter in colder countries, this could be a problem, but no problem for Aussie winters. I've had 3 naturehike tents now, opalus 2, cloud up 3 and the cloud up 2 10d. I have used the Nature Hike Silent Wing 1p for a few multi-day trips in the Canadian Rockies and it has been an excellent "ultralight" budget tent. There is a significant difference in ventilation between my tent and this one however. Happy to see some reviews on Nature Hikes other products. I do agree with the assessment on the poles, even on my model, I would not trust them with any snow load or extreme winds.

Thanks Luke. I'm very pleased to see you test a Naturehike tent at last. I think a lot of us internationals pestered you for one. It's strange that you ended selecting the 20D grey with skirt when most of the cloud up 2 are without it (at least on aliexpress). You usually find it in 210T polyester or 20 D. I totally agree with the 3 season conclusion, which is maybe why few take the 20D grey + skirt version. The floor is a little bit thin for my liking too, but overall it's a tent that's popular with light light backpackers, just like the lanshan tents.

I have the skirtless version of this tent and it was during Amazon Prime day too so a great deal. I took it on a short backpacking trip through the Roan Highlands, set it up on one of the balds during an extremely windy and cold (19 degrees) night. Although it was loud with the wind, it stayed put. A friend of mine had a much more expensive tent that kept blowing over and she ended up joining me in mine in the middle of the night. I didn't have any experience setting it up before first use, found it to be intuitive and user-friendly. A friend gave me a Six Moon Designs tent that I'll use for longer trips just for the weight savings, but I have no complaints about this tent at all.

I've got the Cloud Up 3, skirtless. Have had no issues with it in terms of ventilation and condensation. One thing that I noticed is that you hadn't guyed out the outer layer to keep it off the mesh, which I find helps with ventilation and condensation quite a bit. Also worth noting that the newer design has a cross section at the top of the tent to help spread the top out a lot more :) Can't say I've been unhappy with my cloud up 3! Edit: Can agree about the zippers on the inner however, does get caught if not correctly staked out. I found that if it was TOO taught, it would get caught a ton which was frustrating.

I have the cloud up 2 with the snow skirt and I would have to say whenever I use it the tent tons of condensation builds up on the wall that drips on me if I bump into it. Using the guidelines on the sides of the wall stops it from falling on me but whenever I take the tent down I have to clean off the inside of the fly with a towel and then let it sun dry for it to be dry. I feel they should put vents on the top of it to help with the air flow even if they are small. Other than the condensation the tent is amazing. It fits 6ft me sitting in the center with my 70 lb dog. It doesn't weigh much and I plan on testing it in the snow once we get some more where I live.

At the time I was also looking at the 3f Ul lan Shan 2. It was around same price 2 years ago. (Not anymore). For a cheap budget friendly, free standing, lightish wt, full rain fly tent, very happy. So much so I recommend it to my new scouts when getting into backpacking. It just checks many boxes for a first time or new backpacker. Cons are single door, agree poles are thin, stakes are tiny. Over all very much agree with your assessment. I have been very satisfied with it for 2 years. I recently however did upgrade my kit to the Dan Durston 1p trekking pole tent. Summit or nothing reviewed the cloud up 2 3season tent in winds of up to 55mph on the Moors in UK. The wind bent 3 poles on an MSR pitched next to the Naturehike. Naturehike no damage. Awesome for the price. No wonder other manufacturers shudder. I noted you hadn't guylined the fly on the sides of the tent. That would have allowed better airflow and stopped the fly flapping on inner tent. Just an observation.

Tested this tent first night in Sequoia Forest in December and temp got to 10-15 degrees with the wind. Had a bit of the condensation issue, but very warm and comfortable, I didn't tie it the rainfly tight enough so the flapping from the wind kept me up a bit

My Naturehike tent has been stellar!! I can't tell you what it's been through and like the Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Great tent simple as that. Living in Canada I don't see many of these hiking style tents as being 4 season!! Winter is no joke and something with a stove is more the style needed.

I've just got brand new TNF Inferno -29C sleeping bag. And even my sleeping matt is not the most warm one, I had to take of my socks and my thin fleece after being inside the sleeping bag for around 15 minutes at -12C. Thus, either it is a stove, or well insulated sleeping gear :)

I used to own an MH Hylo 3 tents, now that's a 3.5 season tent. It a single wall on one side, but a double wall where the door is. I suspected that this was not up to their claimed specs, thanks for confirming. Usually, these inexpensive tent does not age well. You can find them on eBay under different brand names too. I hope the results are good enough for recommendation to those of us who only goes out a few times a year.

I have the 3p version with snowskirts. I also had some issues with condensation. New versions have a air vent on 2 sides. I am doubting to cut off the snow skirts on the sides. I also contacted nature hike if the new outer tent fits the old bit the say the don't advise it. But if I can buy it I will.

I've had this tent in my Amazon wish list for months waiting for you to review it. Great info! I'm thinking I'm going to pull the trigger on the one without the snow skirt based on the other comments. Thanks Luke!

I just ordered the same tent with a snow skirt. I am so exited and can't wait for it to arrive any day now. What has your opinion been so far of it since you made this comment?

Keep the reviews coming man. I took a alps mountaineering Tasmanian 2 to the boundary waters and it is a 4 season tent. Half the week was warm and second half was in the low 30’s it held up nice and we had lots of wind and a few nights of strong rain. It held up good and I couldn’t even pitch it in the ground I had to tie it off to bushes and trees cause we were on a rock. I never seem sealed it but I did drinch it In permethrin cause the mosquitoes and black flies were insane. You should run a review on it. It’s a pain in the butt to pitch but other then that it’s a solid tent once it’s up.

I have a Naturehike cloud peak 2 and freaking love it. One of the Best tents I ever owned. I have a sleeping bag and gloves to. They are alright. Had better. Had worse. All In all I really like their products. Mainly because they don't break the bank and are reliable. They may have this tent without the snow skirt in a newer model on Canadian Amazon. Not a hundred percent sure though. A lot of their gear seem to be knock offs of expensive brands products . I think Naturehike is one of the good China made companies. We often hear horror stories about foreign tents but Naturehike is rarely one of em. I would say they are some of the good guys in the budget friendly tent biz. Befor I got mine I watched lots of reviews and all the reviewers seem to be worried about the poles. My poles never failed me and stood up to some pretty good winds and storms.. Obviously they could be built better but for the price it's extremely hard to find anything as good. For me personally. When you only got 150 bucks and need a tent, these are way better Options then wallmart brands.

Cloud Peak 2 is excellent. Could be even better having some tie out points in the middle of the walls (especially the ones in the head and legs area). It would also be beneficial to review doors - when open, they expose internal tent to rain and snow heavily.

Great video, thanks. Couple of other tents I'd like to see reviewed are something similar from 3F UL GEAR as I've heard good things about their tents and the NatureHike Minaret.

You can buy a version without the skirts. Also tbf to the tent you didn't use the side guy points to pull the sides of the fly away from the inner, they could have helped with the sidewind / wetting out issue. Re the durability in wind there's a British wild camper who was caught out in 50 to 60ph winds and it survived the night. His companion's MSR Elixir (I think) ended up with MSR having to replace two bent poles. I certainly wouldn't head out with the Naturehike knowing full well it's going to get rough but it seems to be relatively durable if you do get caught out. I certainly wouldn't consider it a 4 season tent either 👍

Maybe this was pointed out already in the 300+ comments but it looks like he didn't use the mid-fly tie-offs. I wonder if that would have helped with the condensation

Luke, I have this tent without the snowskirt and I use it in Ireland in some seriously wet and very very windy conditions summit camping. This tent is a tank. That snowskirt must diminish the airflow if you've had condensation build up. I've never experienced that on my version.
