Creating a Bode plot from a simulation (or transfer function) is easy, but what if you want to create a Bode plot for a REAL op-amp circuit or filter? One way to do this is to measure a few parameters with an oscilloscope and function generator, and then put those values into a spreadsheet. Another is to use network analysis or frequency response analysis to do it automatically.
In this episode, James takes you through different methods of generating Bode plots, talks about the pros and cons of each, and discusses the tools you'll need for each method.

A few more ideas... 1. Use a wideband noise source as your input, and a spectrum analyzer or fft function on your oscilloscope to look at the output magnitude spectrum. 2. Use a sawtooth wave to linearly ramp the frequency of a constant amplitude input (make an FM chirp signal). You can plot both the sawtooth modulating signal and the amplifier output on the oscilloscope, and use the signal generator's specs to work out the input frequency from the sawtooth voltage. This is a quick way to look at the magnitude spectrum (no log scale though). 3. Use a Spectrum Analyzer with a tracking generator. 4. Feed a long period squarewave (repeating "step-function") into the input. You can extract all the frequency response information about your system from the step response (you remember this from linear systems, right?).

Big fan of the channel, love your content! I was just looking for this and it made my day. I know you can't answer to every particular user, but I'll ask anyway. Is there a way to automate the data acquisition without expending extra on new equipment? I own a RIGOL DS1102Z-E, which has USB. Could it be connected to a program (C++, Matlab, whatever) so that it registers the values while using an external signal generator to manually change the frequency? I also own a cheap signal generator with USB (model JDS6600), maybe it can also be done? I don't expect an answer, but I'd be grateful if you have one or even a suggestion. Keep up the good work, these videos are a great resource for people learning the basics in my personal experience. EDIT: Pardon my English

Originally, I was going to show how to automate the measurement in this video. But that topic grew so big I decided to make it as its own video. So, stay tuned. Subscribe here or join the element14 Community to see when it comes out.

Good video. Is there any book that can help mechanical engineer to learn electronic? Thanks.

"The Art of Electronics" is a favorite book to recommend. Alternatively, the element14 Community has many eBooks that cover electronics topics. And of course there are "The Learning Circuit" and "DC to Daylight" playlists/sections with tons of introduction content.

@@cck1496 Depends on the level you need. If you understand the operation and behavior of passive components (non-semiconductor) then start with Principles of Electronic Circuits (Floyd/Buchla) and then for the semiconductors move onto Electronic Devices (Floyd). Also Professor Fiore does a whole bunch of videos on the subject that should also get you going (he also has associated texts for each course/playlist) all free and accurate. You can find him by searching for "Electronics with Professor Fiore" @Electronics with Professor Fiore _if_ however you find all of this to fundamental for your taste then The Art of Electronics and the X chapters (effectively the stuff left out of the first book) are pretty much the gold standard as James said.

@@thebrokenengineer Thanks for your kind advice. Surely I will go through it....Just as a piece of advice, there is a series of electronic lessons as (part 1 to part 4)....These are very detailed lessons from Washington Technical College. The You tube channel name is "Nerd Lessons". They cover basic electronics and power electronics.... What is your kind perspective about that? As you people are expert and guide naive like us better ... Thanks for sparing your valuable time.... Appreciate your kind advice....
