This is the kind of thing Lego should be selling with the technic system, this is its true potential. Although understandably the plastic parts would never withstand the wear of such a machine, but there must be ways to do it, if only Lego would compromise.

@OnezKrs
@OnezKrs Рік тому
i dont get how it works... (or what does the diff do there)
@DanielKennedyM1
@DanielKennedyM1 Рік тому
@@OnezKrs A differential has a special ability to "add" rotations. Take the two shafts sticking out the sides as A and B. If A and B rotate some amount, the differential case rotates (A+B)/2. To make an 11:1 gearbox, we want input A=11, output B=-1 (negative in this case because the output rotates the opposite direction). Using the formula, the differential must rotate (11 - 1)/2 = 5. So we just take the -1 on the output, do a 1:5 using the big gear, reverse it, and feed that +5 into the differential body. Very clever!

I am a 22 year old mechanical engineering student who has seen an enormous amount of lego, and an enormous number of mechanical devices in my lifetime. This is without a doubt the single greatest creation I have ever seen in my 22 years of living. This is pure art. This is pure genius. This is pure spectacle. It is sublime. The inner workings of this clock being exposed to the outside world are a gift. Watching them is better than a movie. The mechanisms created to solve the problems you encountered are so utterly clever. The color palate could not have been chosen better. The frame being made out of lego bricks is in of itself a feat. I was opened-mouthed from about two minutes to the end. The time lapse at the end was the best way to end this video. Thank you for all of this.

This is a wonderful little item! Even if, as lego, it has no real practical long-term use due to the constant wear, I think this method of making an analog clock is really nifty! If I were more into metalworking, this would be something I'd love to try to recreate. Also 40 second offset after 12 hours seems to be really minimal, but yeah I can understand it stacking up over time, great build!

Just FYI, a high end mechanical watch usually has a variance of +4/-6 seconds per day. Depending on temperature, amount of wind on the mainspring, position, etc. For a static clock 40 seconds is about 17th century level of accuracy, but it's incredible impressive for an amateur project made of mass-produced lego.

Very ingenious and impressive. Aside from the mechanisms, I'm amazed you even managed to get the dials to 1/60 and 5/60 using Lego spacing. And, as I'm sure you will agree, it is satisfying BECAUSE it has no practical purpose, not despite it. That's a very expensive chain - £300 in the UK, if Lego don't send you stuff for free they are crazy. I wonder how you earn your living - you must be an engineer but I wonder if it involves mechanisms, or if you do this at home for something completely different. Thank you for all your mechanisms over the years, please don't stop.

There's a subtle thing I noticed he didn't mention at all. The fork and the second hand are on two separate layer heights to allow the minute hand to function properly without getting bumped. The pigment in the brown chain actually makes them more brittle, and the chains stay on for longer when inside out. That might not be too important for this type of build, but it would make the clock more impact resistant if it collided with something.

And once you make some function, you can reuse immediately in any other program. Actually it had to be, because every 3 links of the chain there is this little notch which allows the minute mechanism to pull the chain by the right amount each time, and so it needs 60 notches, so for everything to be even, the amount of chain links needs to be a multiple of 60

This is a masterpiece. Not only in (lego) engenering, but only esthatical! Personally I do not thinks this will be a real seat, but a an example, on what you can make with Lego, it is brilliant!

Amazing - the whole mechanism is fascinating. The video detail on each part is fantastic. What a great build!
