I came here after making it through roughly a quarter of David Bombal's Udemy course. The way Chuck presents information through drawing and explains terms makes these free videos a million times better, more enjoyable and easier to understand than David's. The only thing that I would change is to upload more CCNA study videos!

Explainations are better yes but he also only explains a fraction of the whole picture. Don't get me wrong I completly understand the fact that he is luring in people with clickbait titles and thumbnails but comparing him to the dee dives from Bombal just shows that you aren't here to understand network security. Like said I like his explanations but he caters to the masses therefore only things almost everyone understands and will watch. I watch both but for a true understanding of your whole network, do yourself a favor and watch Bombal aswell or better do CCNA

I recently discovered something about how our brain works, repetition. The reason you understood this lesson well was because of David Bombal. I once studied Adrian Cantrill's material on networking, the first time it was tough, the second time I increased to about 60%, by the time I read it the third time, I wondered why I didn't understand it the first time.

Excellent video on basic network security. I’m currently moving to pfsense as a firewall that is running on a refurbished Lenovo thinkedge. Great stuff. Next step is to block all devices and only allow devices based on MAC address. It is more work in the beginning but will add another secure layer

Try and do this every morning. Say or think what you are thankful for. It can be big or small. You will be surprised at how much power it has over your brain to produce positive endorphins. I am thankful for my significant other. Or I am thankful for a roof over my head. This is a great business to get in once you are in. Don't give up! :)

Though I'm not a computer pro, I've been doing computers since 1967 -- I've built my own for 40 years and have been home networking since 1985. I thought I was pretty well-informed and had a well-protected system. This video reminded of a few things I over-looked. Thank you, Network Chuck! It looks like I'll have to get myself a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro. By the way, one thing you didn't mention is potential security risks via DNS. Lots of websites serve ads from known ad servers, and malware can use DNS lookups to download more malware. Pi-hole is any easy solution, particularly if you run it from a Raspberry Pi. I'm sure you know about it, but you might want to mention it in another video. This was a long post, so now I'm going to get some coffee. :)

Always love your videos. I prefer to think of Client Isolation as s "Layer 2 Firewall that you can't make any exceptions for" because that's essentially what it is. I use client isolation on the Guest network and just have 1 (layer 3) firewall exception so guests can cast to my Shield's VLAN, seems to work well after configuring the mDNS repeater

I met my husband, William, in college. After graduation, we spent 5 years in a long distance relationship. I stayed in New York to work and go to grade school while he went to Washington state to work on a submarine for the US Navy. He was deployed five times. This was the hardest point in our relationship. We could write emails occasionally, but other than that, there’s no communication on a submarine. But, I knew that if we could get through that, we could get through anything. And we did. We finally got married, and the Navy moved us to Hawaii. I called this our “two year honeymoon” because we were finally together, and in paradise of all places! We got to make up for lost time. I was worried it would be difficult for us to go from hardly ever seeing each other to living together, in a new place where neither of us knew anyone. But starting over like that really helped us bond. After a few years, he had to go back on a submarine. We spent a lot of time apart during those years even though we “lived” in the same place. In the military, similar to long distance relationships, the lows can be low but the highs are so high. For me, the high was visiting William on a port call in Guam. And there is no better feeling than that homecoming hug. I wouldn’t have had these amazing experiences without the hard parts that came with them. One doesn't necessarily need Linux for nmap. I scanned my internal home network with nmap on FreeBSD. 🙂 I've been curious about Cisco gear for a long time. I learned some of the basics a while back when setting up a 3845 integrated services router running CME to act as my home phone controller. I recently acquired a bit more Cisco gear from eBay with the intention of Ciscoizing more of my home network. I stumbled across this video series while searching for material to learn more about setting up the Cisco gear I've acquired. Thank you for providing this information, especially for free.

This was a fun video to watch! Personally, we have a Fortigate 1801F at home since my dad is licensed to test them before they hit the market. So yea, we're really safe :D The things you showed did indeed not work for me however I really like that you gave advice to all people showing what they should do instead. Oh a few things we have going on in our firewall: the Wifi is limited to MAC adresses meaning that only certain MAC addresses can access it an actually use the internet. You are unable to upload/download anything in the LAN if you arent registered manually on the FortiGate. Our switch is a seperate device just to clean things up similiar as you have it, its just a small 24P switch (not so small for homes as I learned). We have a constant backup runnning for our devices and our router as well is encapsuled in everything. Commonly, our internet progresses through our firewall before it hits the router. Its great to have 3 network engineers in a single home isnt it!

Lots of great advice in a half hour video. As for routers not all ISPs allow you to use your own router. They will help you change your pw on your router but you still must use the router that they provide and they don't like their clients messing with the settings in the router. DD WRT is not an option for me. One might advise me to go find another ISP but I live in a very remote area in the Canadian North. I don't really have a lot of options. I only share this as I'm sure I'm not alone in this respect. What I don't do is use WiFi in my home. All devices use direct connect and that's a lot of devices so I use a lot of hardware to keep all those devices connected. I'm old enough not to use a cell and not miss it. Smart phones aren't smart enough to respect my privacy so I don't own one. If I must have mobile communication I have a laptop and Tim Hortons generally provides a good internet connection. My approach is simple and it works well for me. I pity people who feel they must remain connected to the Matrix 24/7 365 days a year. I own my network. My network does NOT own me.

Type "ipconfig /all" in windows command line to find your modem's default gateway IP address. Then log into modem, put into bridge mode and then use your own router.

For those that cant install nmap when you make your server, use the command || apt-get update && apt-get upgrade || (without the pipes) first, then use the apt install nmap -y command. should work

Hey Chuck, you are a great instructor, you explain difficult things in a manner that is easy to understand, and you are very entertaining. A few years ago I built a home network with a Cisco Small Business router which acts as a gateway, a Cisco Small Business Layer 3 managed switch, which handles the routing and has two VLANS (one for my network and one for a guest network), and a Cisco Enterprise AP. Like you, I also have smart lights and I like your idea of putting the lights on a separate VLAN. My question is when having your phone and lights on separate VLANs, how do you control the lights with your phone if they can't talk across VLANS, or even Alexa if none of the devices on that VLAN can talk to each other? I'm also planning to switch to pfSense as a gateway firewall as my current Cisco router doesn't seem to support the use of Nord VPN to connect my entire house to the VPN. Are you still using the Dream Machine Pro or are you using pfSense? What is your current opinion between those options. Thanks Chuck!
