People really underestimate how much the natural texture and physics of traditional media add to a painting. I hear so many people talk about how digital art is so much easier, but whenever you see traditional artists move to digital art you’ll often notice their pieces look more lifeless. It takes a lot of knowledge and skill to learn how to make digital media do what you want to do as that textures and physical interaction of elements isn’t there by default to add life and hide imperfections. Both media have their eases and difficulties

Hey Marco, I know your work is very much inspired by traditional art (and it's a joy to look at) but I'm wondering if you might consider doing a video on digital brushwork that doesn't necessarily emulate traditional media. I've definitely seen digital art that has fantastic brushwork but doesn't seek to look traditional or like a particular medium, yet when I try to research or find resources I always end up at results which are very much "how to make your digital work look like watercolor/pastels/markers" etc. Some examples off the top of my head would be: Alexinatree, EliOli, Loish, John Loren, and DeadSlug (not all of his work but definitely his Spirited pieces with backgrounds) Their work looks digital, but still feels alive without emulating a particular traditional medium. It's more expressive than a lot of digital art, but more subtle than the resources I usually dig up.
@marcobucci
@marcobucci 2 роки тому
Good point - I should consider something like that in the future. I actually do have a video that does hit on this (i.e. getting good brushwork without necessarily aiming to emulate a traditional approach). It's episode 3 of my '10 Mins To Better Painting' series: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/e6p0e4ZtoounrYk.html

You might try schoolism they in at least one class (digital painting basics by Bobby Chu ) teaches techniques to do all kinds of things with a basic round brush. The process I witnessed was similar to what's in this video except your playing with the different elements of a round brush to get variation. Due to the fact that it's still all the same brush just different settings you get a more digital look without giving up on variation and interest.

@boredchubbypanda
@boredchubbypanda 2 роки тому
Jeez stop whining people! First of all artists do need to make money y'all. There's nothing wrong with a sponsor video now and then. I feel really disappointed that you're saying this for Marco who puts so much value and thought even into his free UKposts videos. There are artists who are selling their courses for thrice the money and with a fraction of value that Marco puts on his channel. So shut up. If you can't appreciate it then quit criticizing. Plus he did say that all this can be replicated in any software. Even with all the live brushes he is introducing that are specific to Corel, he makes sure to talk about brush, edgework and fundamental watercolor techniques in this video. There's much to learn if you keep your eyes open.
@NOTDeezy.
@NOTDeezy. 2 роки тому
@@boredchubbypanda I get that but at least he could have clarified that this was a sponsor instead of leading us on. I wasn't able to learn any of this because 90% of the video was just how amazing painter is and the rest 10% he already mentioned in his previous lessons on his channel.

Houston Sharp has a great brush set, its free and the one he uses it on his pieces you can see he has a painterly style, (there is a bunch in the set but all I use is the pen and the oil paint brushes, the oil thick paint brush in particular) and when I used it alongside the advice in this channel and BoroCG and its has brought HUGE life to my drawings, like I literally see the difference, one of those rare moments in life where I see myself visibly level up lol P.S. Also, if you are going for the oil painting or gouache look I recommend sticking to only a handful of brushes that are similar, and rare use of airbrushes, paint it like how you would in physical, put the tones, then find the midtones and sample in between to simulate the mixing, if you sample multiple times you will get multiple different mid tones between your brushstrokes which will make your drawing have richer toning and more painterly look

While his sketches are very rough in style, he or one of his representatives mentioned about starting with hands and feet to get the hard part out of the way and it helps the anatomy come together more clean. I did play with starting with hands in my figures (after some study and warm up) and i noticed a huge improvement for myself. is it possible to change the single brush-hairs in the brushes in the new version? the tiny 1-pixel-wide hair-textures in a lot of the thicker brushes did irk me in my earlier 2019 version of the program. I like that they were randomised and the brushes per se were gorgeous, but it would've been nicer if there'd been a slider to make the bristles thicker and fewer. this and the fact that they didn't have any way to resize the text and buttons of the ui porperly made me go back to my good old clipstudio even though corel's brush engine is a lot more advanced and would fit my painting method pretty well. I'd like to give it another try once I've got more time.
