I definitely get the thought process behind this project better now. I believe that nobody really needed to throw salt at you, however it was more about the presentation of the device, feeling somewhat deceptive. I think that most people (including myself) took the typical associated persona, if you will, of what a "handheld" is, not the technicality of a device being held in the hands. Again, I think this is a great project and proof of concept of use-what-you-got, and that in reality, you shouldn't need to explain yourself, however with the context of the videos showing people what's possible, that little bit of explanation, I think, helps understand why this project would be worth it, and who it's for. Great job, and hopefully people will think a little more before throwing useless negativity (at least on your channel)

by that logic, any full size console, or full size pc, with a small usb powered led screen connected to it and an xbox controller duct taped to the that screen is a "handheld."

"I like the the thing that I made because it solves the problem that I had." I think that's all you had to say. I had a similar situation with a broken phone of mine and the Steam Deck. The phone's touch digitizer was shot, but I can cast its image and control its internals through my Steam Deck, basically turning my Steam Deck into a large Android device with a built in controller. I've also started just leaving my Deck in my back pack and just carrying a Steam Controller around in my jacket pocket along with an Nreal Air HMD.

@ekinteko
@ekinteko Рік тому
It's funny you mention that because I attempted to do this myself during the holiday break of 2018. It was to graft hardware controls on the most powerful phone, and have the unit be a fully pocketable device. A sort of "PSP Phone" if you will. Well naturally that lead me down the path of the JoyCons since the Nintendo Switch was released recently. And for the phone it was the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact (QSD 835). I soon found that there was no way for me to have the JoyCons connect via their Pogo Pins. I moved to an iPega controller, and also found that soldering the controls meant sacrificing the USB port on the phone. Since there's only one, it put a stop to the project as I needed that for debugging and charging. So the solution was to 3D Print a new housing for the Phone, which moved the USB-C to the side for charging only, but internally it had the controller connected to a micro hub, which plugged into the original phone's USB. This all happened on the right side, leaving the left side open to add something like a small lithium battery, but that would've made one side heavier than the other. I paused the project due to commitments, and was even working to make this new housing to give the phone a larger chamber for its speakers. But it was too much for an amateur by himself. I should've been thinking outside the box. The bluetooth connectivity on the iPega was bad, but the JoyCons we're okay, so it just needed a Custom 3D-Case to fit the Rails and a better phone to counterbalance the battery spent from the Bluetooth. Then 9 months later we saw the release of the ASUS ROG 1, which actually had two USB ports, making it a viable donor. But it was a huge phone which wouldn't have been pocketable with permanent controls attached. Then a couple months later we got the release of the Razer JungleCat, which basically solved the problem I was attempting. I felt dumb. And a little after that I heard someone else was doing the exact same project I was doing, but was using the older Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (QSD 801) as the donor and for the controls it was a PS Vita, and the connectivity was using a daughter-board to the phone. All of these options are pretty clunky, and the closest solution we have seen to this is actually the Retroid Pocket 3+ that recently dropped.

I think it was just a couple of days ago ETA Prime made a video on an all integrated wireless solution for a handheld streaming device that has a Kickstarter up right now, but something like 3x this. I imagine mostly because it's using fancy mmWave tech for HDMI streaming... those are very low latency but also very expensive.

IMO something is not simply "a handheld (gaming device)" if it is incapable of doing some level of processing in the hand, and ones that aren't capable could simply be classified as "Cloud/Streaming Handhelds". Oddly enough that means that Logitechs G Cloud handheld, IS NOT one of those cloud handhelds, it is still a real handheld despite the name they chose, because it does do local processing of some games, with cloud/in-home streaming just letting you expand on your options. I feel like that distinction is really really important, because honestly so few people actually have a use for cloud/in-home streaming handhelds, just because the scenario where you need that is so rare, ON TOP of the idea that many people already have a phone/tablet or TV stick already capable of solving that problem. Whereas REAL handhelds MASSIVELY expand on their usability in that they can be taken outside the home even away from buildings entirely, can give you something to do during power outages, and can be used by friends and family in the home while not hogging your PC or other screens already in use by you or another friend or family member. You can do a weird virtual machine setup where the in-home streaming device silently uses part of your PC hardware in the background, but it is still hogging some resources and is not for less experienced users given the complex setup. That whole premise of +1 device count and easy and separate setup is what makes things like the Miyoo Mini so good. Of course any phone/PC can play the same games, but the point is you get an additional device that doesn't in any way conflict with your other devices, and the software setup is entirely separate so you never need to worry about phone/pc updates or OS re-installs or upgrades that would reset and make you have to re-do your emulation setup.

I like this better than the original :) See because to me, if the handheld definition just means "handheld electronic" then you could go as far as to say that a PS5 is handheld because you hold the controller, the old video wasn't that far from that especially with the comparisons to a Wii U gamepad. It is really impressive that you still managed to "finish" it within the budget however, and I do think it makes for a pretty neat portable, that battery life is insane haha! If the project from the original video serves your purpose well, that is what matters really, but I can easily see why calling it a handheld was controversial.

This entirely makes sense. With a tether, Taki can attach a PC, a laptop, an Android box, a single board computer, or a prototype to a handheld to see if that item would work IF it was made into a handheld formfactor. Often, processors for a handheld before it is made ALREADY exist on the market. If someone announces they are going to make a handheld using a new Ryzen APU and that processor comes out in a Laptop, creators like Taki, The Phawx, and ETA prime MIGHT choose to buy that laptop and test it to see how good it is. With the Handheld tether, we can get an idea of what the handheld will be like. If you don't believe this is useful, you should see some of the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP developer kits. Some of them had some kind of tether to a dev machine that either had the hardware in the handheld and testing & measuring in the box OR the entire handheld processor AND measuring equipment was inside a box and a shell with controller and screens was attached to the other end. This has been a practice in the industry for YEARS.

Appreciate that you went into further detail but feels bad that you seem like you had to defend yourself, shouldn't have to do that. You're the number one go-to for me for whats the latest and greatest in handhelds, love all the work you do for the community!

Nice to do by yourself, but a used Steamdeck now it’s very cheap and can do much more.

This is really cool but for what it takes to make a really good handheld you can just buy a SteamDeck or any of the many other handhelds out there

Gameboy Advance had an AC adapter that you could use instead of batteries...you ended up being tethered to the wall plug. Did that make it no longer a handheld? People like to make up their own definitions and gatekeep

I still think Taki is on the right track,but i think the device does need to have a on the go type of mode,ie using a android or something on the go and when at home having the full power of a full desktop behind it,kinda like what lot of ppl been doing with external gpu docks n laptops,but in a Deck form factor,making this seamless would be the goal and finding a way to remove or wireless the hdmi would be epic,KEEP Going TAKI you are onto something.
