Linguistically speaking, many southern US accents, especially in the tidewater region, are just slowed down English accents. "Jay-ool" in Shane's chimneysweep pronunciation doesn't seem too far from how someone with a strong Southern accent might say it.

fun fact; standardised spelling was not a thing for a long while - it was properly introduced and reinforced around 1700/1800s (and even then, it took a while for schools to implement this new curriculum) - and since there was no set spellings of words back then, people would just spell words how they pronounced them. that's why it's so common in old english for words to have an e on the end - think "olde" which got standardised to old - and words varying all the time. as long as it vaguely looked like the way it should be pronounced, it was practically the correct spelling. considering the letter g and j can be interchangeable in situation and the pub is based in london, the spelling of jail as gaol would make a lot of sense for that time period. [i learnt most of this in my english language/literature courses in college but i might have remembered the 1800s part incorrectly - it may be between 1600 and 1700 but i'm not 100% sure.]

@@blake9033 it well and truly is and I never realised it until I started learning about it. back then, they used to have a letter called the long s that they used at the start or in the middle of letters - but never the end, oddly enough - so some words would be written like "ſinfulneſs" instead of "sinfulness". even now, it makes absolutely no sense to me.

Radio stations are not the only thing that use radio frequencies, the point is to pick up some type of phenomenon or cross modulation from unknown sources, even if there's no evidence it can or can't do what it's supposed to do. Radio waves are invisible to the human senses, so the idea is to reach out to the unknown & use methods that are not usually explored by regular people. Yes, it's very susceptible to radio contamination, but that's not the point of the device as you're trying to portray it. Also, if it was actually picking up ghosts, that would be in British accents as well.

If you admit there are things in this universe that are unexplainable, then you can't rule out anything that's either paranormal, interdimensional or just overall unexplainable using known science. The reasonable position is to acknowledge that there are numerous things in the universe that humans do not understand or do not have the capacity to understand given their senses, any scientist will tell you this.

Shane does a decent job at still being open to getting evidence for ghosts despite him being adamant in his disbelief. I don’t know if I believe in them myself, but if they were real, it could definitely show that Shane being so cynical and playful about it could drive those interactions away.

Well, Ryan and Shane do tend to miss a lot that I’m sometimes like ‘if Ryan realized he would freak out’. But I think the light is more easily explained by logic than, well, ghosts. He was still freaked out though. I hate to use the Shane argument, but it’s much more likely that the light was just malfunctioning a bit at that point rather than ghosts.

Try watching one of these right, but look away whenever the spirit box thing is used. Don't read the text, then tell me what you hear. Cause I heard something completely different when not reading the text while watching these. Our brains make patterns out of nonsense all the time, you add enough noises, If you want to hear something, you'll hear it. I don’t really think this one was very compelling. Sure it had a lot of consistency but it wasn’t even close to any sort of actual conversation between the ghost and Ryan. A much better time that the spirit box definitely worked was in an earlier episode at a prison and they communicated with El Chapo. I forget which exact episode it was though
