Chased out of a bar with a BB gun. Running through a pachinko parlor. Snapping Polaroids and dancing with stoners. Singing karaoke in wigs. Watch Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) find themselves (and each other) during this long, wild night in Tokyo.

Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. Charlotte and Bob venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life's possibilities.

@@CannibalWHORE22 Get a dog! Or a cat or a pet fish. Maybe a lion or a bear. As long as you keep them well fed and only play with them well wearing a suit of armor you might not die. Wild animals can be very loving. Love is simply connecting with others for any reason we so choose. Most natural connection is for warmth, for food, shared company. Love can also be cultivated over shared interests. Love for the purpose of reproduction is also common and last about 4 years initially for people. 4 years is long enough for a child to be introduced into a community group and be reasonably self reliant. Asking for food or drink and shitting is about the essentials of life and a 4 year old can do this just fine. After this initial 4 year cycle an additional set of bonding chemicals are released to help parents stay together longer which will help further cultivate a higher survival rate for the child and improve it's chances of cultivating a quality education in life as it grows into adulthood. LOVE ... just another survival skill cultivated by nature and perpetuated by chemicals in our body.

We clicked immediately, we couldn't get enough of each other. I had to let him go yesterday, his duty was done and had to go home far far away. Our parting at the airport was devastating. We don't know if we will ever see each other again but, a part of him will always be in my heart as I know that a part of me will always be in his.

Like to the point that “best” wasnt defined; so how do you determine what is best? Like a car that cant fuel up quickly vs a car that has a better tech to lead a much needed revolution or like a car (truck really) that can go distance + load but not be carrying batteries as 'dead weight' and really reduce the load/volume/net capacity. All of these things fall under "best" if asked what the best car is. I think you are focusing too deeply that this film didnt make it for you, in your top ¿100? ¿k? films, and I'm sorry. #chill

Shortly after seeing this movie the 1st couple times I realized that Scarlett Johansson is actually an accomplished singer as well. So it was endearing to notice that she had to roughen up her karaoke singing to appear as though she wasn't a great singer. Although she's not that hard on the eyes alone, I can never get enough of her voice and her laughter is like the sound of Angels!!!

If you remember Bill Murray when he did his "nightclub singer" skits on SNL, he too can sing much better than he did here. I wonder if he dumbed it down intentionally or if he just lost the skill, I wish he had done a better job of singing in tune. I am sure he could have, even if he used autotune.

The ubiquitous juxtaposition in all of the major themes is beautifully nuanced. This picture couldn't have been made without elite actors. Coppola's characters carry an unseen, unspoken burden. Very often sad people that feel guilty for being sad. Though in a foreign land, with a language barrier, often struggling to understand, let alone participate in the culture mirrors Bob and Charlotte's lives at the moment. Both at strange transition points of life. Both are uncertain, unsatisfied and "strangers in a strange land".

I was in Yokosuka Japan from 2016 - 2018 with the Navy. Just an hour south of Tokyo but a part of the greater metropolitan area. I have never seen a movie which more accurately captures the feeling of a place and time than this. The language barrier and the fact that everywhere is walkable/ uses Mass transit means you will bond very tightly with those you find language and culture in common with and share in the feeling that living there is amazing. Best place I have ever lived and favorite country to visit. Best experienced with dear friends or loved ones, but go alone if needed and you will make life long connections when you are there.

What's also cool is that Hiromix had a cameo for the party scenes. Hiromix rose to fame as a diaristic snapshot photographer at the age of 17; being recommended by the famous photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. Coincidentally, Scarlett Johansson was 17 when Lost in Translation was filmed and would also rise to fame after the release of this film. Photography plays an important part in this film that I feel like goes unnoticed. Sofia Coppola's cameras were used in the party scenes and Scarlett's husband in the film is a reflection of Spike Jonze who would make a career in the skateboarding world as a photographer, then as a music video director, and finally as a film director. It's great to see where many of the influences come from and are portrayed in this film.

Tokyo is all about fleeting moments, as I’m sure many a big city is, but this film captured it beautifully. This version of Tokyo no longer exists to the same extent (rapid increase in tourism has made things much more accessible, while also seeing the crackdown on certain, more “uniquely Japanese” things, as they might be viewed negatively to outsiders), but I highly recommend everyone to visit at least once. I came to Japan in 2008, and it was very, very similar to this movie.

This movie perfectly depicts the feeling your left with when you make a connection with someone that is brief and fleeting. I watched this movie with my girlfriend the year it came out, and thought it was boring. Years later I found myself traveling and made a similar connection as the one depicted in this movie. I was so happy and heartbroken when we had to go our separate ways. That experience guided me back to Lost In Translation, so I watched it again on my 9 hour flight back home. The feeling of "what if" is painful, but the brevity of these relationships leave us with only good feelings for those people we connected with. Our time together was the bliss of a carefree part of our life, cut short by life calling us back.

Can't believe Scarlett was only 18 during the production of this film.

It's insane, isn't it? She has the maturity and worldliness of somebody at least 30.

Scarlett Johansson was born on November 22, 1984. Principal photography for Lost in Translation began on September 29, 2002 and lasted 27 days. She was 17 when this was made, and turned 18 shortly thereafter.

Yes I heard 17, she did a smash up job for someone so young, the timing was amazing, like the last scene with the cig, just perfect

There are two types of people, those of us that get this movie and then the rest. Special, special movie. Bigger than a movie.

I hated this film when it first came out. Now that I’m older and more mature, I see how special it is.

The first time I watch this movie I hated it as well. It came on again and watched it again and was floored. From one viewing to the very next I did a complete 180. I never had that happen before. Most people either completely love or hate this film. I experienced both and I am so happy where I am at now with this film.
