I agree that MCL is quite confusing, but I basically think about it like this: A higher MCL means that the signal can still get through despite a greater loss of data along the way. Primarily this is achieved through the use of repetitions. So, a technology with a higher MCL roughly equates to a better range. In that case, yes, higher is better! But understand that, with more repetitions you also have more power drain since the transmitter is on and transmitting for longer periods of time.
