Tried to switch last year with MacBook M1. Normally both my wife and me use Dell XPS 15 for work and 13 when traveling. Macbook ended up being used 3x in one full year. Ended up selling Macbook. Point is, switching is hard, stick with what you have used to and with what you will enjoy more.

I've been a Mac user since 2007 and was forced to switch to Windows for work. They are both good OS's and Windows 11 has a surprising amount of attention to detail, but it seems that the Mac is just that little bit more refined somehow.

@@kjeldkaj I have spent 1.3k to test, so I think its easier to say than do it. And when you move from Windows to MacOS, it is all about time to get things done. Mac is great, no question about it, just was slowing me down for many random things... One of the reasons I wanted to try it was also because of iphone (photos from phone to Mac etc), as I have it as my 2nd phone (android is of course main driver). In about same time I got Synology NAS... All in all, for me did not worked out.

I really cant wait till the snapdragon Elite X to see hwo Windows can compete then (especially with battery life). My only issue with most UKposts reviews is that they focus on photo and video editing workflows rather than data workflows which is generally where Windows wins out.

The zenbook 14 oled literally outperforms the macbook air m3 in 90% of categories. Apple tech is good but the price is bloated due to branding and reputation. If you want raw performance and the best bang for your buck, go for the windows machine without thinking about it twice.

Microsoft Office runs well on macOS, some say better, but I use it so rarely in Windows these days I wound't know. What I do find rubbish is Outlook in Windows. It's often 20 minutes later picking up my emails than Apple's Mail app. It's probably some configuration detail, but I didn't need to configure Apple's Mail app to deliver my emails promptly. Also, OneDrive, which is really useful, works perfectly on macOS. In fact I have it syncing across all my macOS devices, plus my PC laptop and both my Windows 11 VMs running on my MacBook Pro and my Mac mini. I used to enjoy gaming when I was younger, and still have an Alienware computer in storage somewhere, but it was a pain in the arse to configure it, and now I have no interest in gaming of that type - maybe Sudoku or Kukuro, but nothing that needs nVidia GPUs or processor cooling.

I am using Macbook pro 14 with m1 pro, and also an Hp Omen with rtx 2070 as a windows laptop. I think windows is a little bit user friendly, start menu and screen using without a menu bar on top is a better experience. MS Office is better in Windows. Also as a software business user, I have to user some apps dont like using arm based chips such as MSSQL. And there is some screen hz issue that i can not describe. MacOS is not native 144, I think you have to develop your app using high refresh rates. You can test using Edge and Safari while making full screen. You can see the difference while they are getting bigger or smaller. I see the same issue in my LG 144 hz 34 inch display, so it is not about monitor, it is about OS. And also you can not see the copying speed while you copy files :) each time i have a little smile when i see that :)

I recently tried switching from a Macbook Air M1 to a Dell XPS 15 9510. The XPS had a wonderful display, great build quality and a very large and comfy trackpad. I was fully expecting a bump in performance, but to my surprise, for the tasks I do for a living it didn't offer more performance and had horrible battery life in comparison (tasks like graphic design, simple motion graphics etc.) I would often be slightly bothered by the fan noise of the XPS where the MBA is basically silent. Another issue for me is that the experience of using a trackpad in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign is far better on Mac than on Windows, which is sad because its honestly just a software issue, an issue I didn't experience in other apps. I really wanted to keep the XPS but it didn't make sense for my needs. I think its always just a matter of finding the tool that you like the best.

I used to be an Apple die hard, even worked for them for 6 years. The reason I don't use them anymore is because of their 'warm, comfy, cozy Prison." Love that you said Prison! There is some truth to that. I'm too much of a tech enthusiast to be limited with what devices I get and don't want to lose out on features just because I thought a phone with a fingerprint scanner is a better use case for me. Apple has a tendency to decide what is best for it's users, and any amount of customizability you want to do either costs you more money, or features on the product you own. I started to get tired of that trade off, so embraced Android/Windows because they do play nice together. At least as nicely as they can given the huge variety of both. I use what works best for me, makes me more productive, has less hassle, and has the best support. Since I moved there, the Mac has easily been my choice as I have been in the Apple ecosystem for 15+ years. I am well past the days of tinkering, aesthetics, and choice. I do not see the laptop as an extension of me, only something that gets stuff done. Windows obviously has a massive advantage in choice, as multiple OEMs give various takes. That is a naughty negative connotation as Apple is only a tiny player in the total PC market, around 9% share. The natural monopoly Windows has is a glorious advantage and almost impenetrable as people will generally stay with what they know.

@susiolu The Swift X has been great for me. The price to performance is very good. There are some things I wish it did better, like had a 16:10 screen, a bit better build quality, upgradeable RAM, and better back-lit keyboard (seriously, a white backlight on silver keys is pretty useless unless you're in absolute darkness.) When I bought it though it was just under $1000 USD, and for the specs it has and price its a great all rounder. I came game on it with decent results, and do my work as a software developer with little issue. Having more than 16GB of ram would be nice sometimes, but it wasn't that much of a deal breaker to stop me from getting it. Maybe the newer models have more ram. I'm pretty sure the newer ones are 16:10 displays at least.

I have a Macbook pro 16" for work, and wanted a light travel/on the go laptop. I bought the Zenbook 14, and am happy with the choice. The only real issue with it is that it doesn't have "Instant on" like Mac, so when I haven't used it in a few hours, it takes about 20s to turn on. But battery life good (about 7 hours), display very good, got my 16GB ram that I need for software dev. Trackpad and sound good. Nice and light. It is actually a nicer consumption device than my iPad, especially in bed. If I was going to buy a Macbook Air/Pro, I would keep looking to move up the pricing ladder to get the spec I actually wanted, and would end up spending about 3 times as much. Go Asus.

As a business productivity (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) focused user, I would never again go with Mac. I tried once in 2008 and again in 2022 (with a M1 Pro 14" Macbook Pro) and both times, my Mac laptop became a glorified table ornament used almost only for web browsing, music/video streaming and video chatting. Windows is a MUCH better platform for anyone who wants to use their PC for office productivity work. With that said, I fully acknowledge that my experience does not reflect that of creative type users. I will also readily acknowledge that Apple always has best in class hardware (which you pay a significant premium for) and their machines are very durable, but if you get a high quality Windows laptop, the same is true. It's just that yes there are $500 budget Windows laptops out there and so when those stop working after two years, that should be expected. If you spend $1000-1500 for a high quality Windows laptop, it will generally last you many years just like a Macbook Air. I'm not trying to knock Apple as they do make great laptops, but MacOS is not for everyone and to buy into the marketing shpiel that Macs are just better is a fallacy.

Another youtuber ran tests on the useage of Macbooks from M1 to M3 (all in each range) for music production/ audio mixing et al and found that ironically the M2 and M3 are less equiped to handle pro projects with larger track counts, than the M1 range in a number of DAW instances. This includes logic, which was surprising, until you see that the increased cores aren't apportioned to performance but to efficiency. That will work well for multi-tasking , but not necessarily for apps that haven't yet been optimised for the changes. That goes some way in explaining why used macbooks (and macs) don't stick around long enough to buy them at better pricing.

The fact that it provides consistent single core performance in geek bench with and without plugged in is really good. The power efficiency has also increased a lot . I switched from my first ever laptop (a Celeron HP) to a 12’ MacBook Air 2015 at university, and then to the M1 MacBook Air a year after it launched. Absolute game-changer. I do miss Windows’ file management and window management system but that’s about it. I’m now looking to upgrade to a 14-inch M3 Pro since I made the mistake of going with an 8GB M1 Air, which isn’t enough for light work with lots of Chrome tabs, light photo editing, and Slack. Avoid 8GB MacBooks if you can - they are still awesome and super smooth but 16GB gives you headroom in case your workflow becomes a bit more demanding. And you aren’t really overpaying since when you sell it down the road, you’d get a bit more money if it has more RAM.

My preference for Mac is for several reasons: 1. From what I've read and experienced, no one makes a touchpad as good as Apple. On my work Windows laptop, even with the touchpad sensitivity set to low, when I'm typing, sometimes my palm will inadvertently touch it and move the cursor somewhere else. Very maddening. And I love the haptic feedback and that you can click (not just tap) anywhere on it instead not being able to click at the top of a standard Windows touchpad (although I've read that there are a few Windows machines with haptic touchpads now, but they are still not as good as a MacBook's). 2. Rarely any fan noise on my MacBook Pro. Fans almost always run on my Windows laptop. 3. Find macOS to be much more intuitive, usable, and delightful to use than Windows. 4. Love the whole ecosystem, such as tightly integrating with my iPhone and being able to Airdrop files among Apple devices. 5. The hardware is premium, the laptop is thinner and lighter, and battery life is much better than the Windows laptop I'm using. 6. I generally need to make far less tweaks to a Mac to get it working the way I like. I will admit that Macs are more expensive, and it's a bummer that you can't expand the memory. But it's the sum of the parts that, for me, makes for a much better experience on a Mac.

Would like to add a bit of context, as this video portrays the two devices as being close as far as performance: Over the last 20 years i've owned & daily-drove 14 windows-based laptops. They had spanned a wide variety of brands & price ranges. Currently i run a fully-spec'd Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, which I've had for 1 year and 4 months. During the same time period, I've owned 5 macbook offerings. The longest I've had a Windows laptop survive was a little over 2.5 years. Like clockwork, once they had hit close to the 2 year mark, they would either fail catastrophically, or would have degraded so far in performance they were rendered inoperable. On the Mac side, my 2006 MacBook & 2011 MacBook Air still run to this day. I use the MacBook Air as an emulation station, and the 2006 decorates one of my book shelves. My daily workstation is an original MacBook Pro M1 from 2021. I run this device 24 hours a day, and only restart when a software update is released; I've never had an issue with it. The other stark difference between the two is battery life. My Pro M1 can run for days without charging. It delivers almost 18 hours of battery for light UKposts streaming. My Lenovo can achieve almost 3.5 hours, and the older devices were worse. The newest & best Windows devices are catching up finally, offering 8-11 hours of use for very light tasks, but the gap is still significant. Do not mistake sharing my personal experience as Windows-bashing: Windows is a fantastic operating system, and I enjoy the devices I have. I have a gaming PC which I run daily & love. Unfortunately, due to Windows having to cater to a plethora of brands & devices, the gap will continue to exist. Mac doesn't shoulder the burden of developing their platform to work for other brand devices, as well as their own. Windows is riddled with redundancies to play nice with all, which decimates battery & performance. As the old adage goes: Nice guys finish last. If you were looking to transition away from Apple Silicon expecting to purchase a Windows laptop of equivalent performance & battery life, you may find you regret the swap regardless of spec. Build quality, battery life, longevity, & compute power will fall short of your previous device. That said, for 90% of the populous a Windows device will exceed their expectations & be more laptop than they'll ever need. Please allow me to reiterate: there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Windows device, so long as you tailor your expectations. I love technology in every form, regardless of suitability for my current workflow. Having so many options is what fosters innovation & growth. My first introduction to computing was on a Windows Pentium II, and I've been enthralled ever since. This video has several excellent points, listing many key features for both parties. Just wanted to throw some personal experience into the mix, as most choose one platform & stick to it! And as for the 2 giants that are Apple & Windows, battle-away for platform supremacy; the rest of us only stand to gain from this heavyweight bout. (p.s... a non-laptop note: Comparing Apple's headset with a Quest device is ludicrous. Quest device is a headset that can enhance (using that term lightly) a laptop's usability in certain situations. Apple Vision Pro is a computer in itself, not requiring an external Laptop to achieve an infinitely-more polished experience. Highlighting the price-gap without explaining capability is unfair. You wouldn't compare a Toyota Corolla & a Lamborghini Huracán solely on price. That would be a disservice to the Lamborghini Engineering team, and more praise than a Corolla ever deserves. Again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Quest headsets; tailoring expectations to align on costing & capability is key.)

One other important factor is the absolute absence of bloatware on macOS. When you first boot it up, it offers the cleanest possible experience. I am so sick of Dell and their bloatware, it takes hours to get rid of it when you buy a new laptop. No such issue with Macs.

@@addoconstantwell tbh that argument is getting a little old since macbooks of the same price are often using better hardware for everything when compared to contenders. The case itself, trackpad which is haptic, speakers, cpu which is still quite ahead in technology especially compared to intel, and screen which has often best brightness and color accuracy and contrast (no oled doesn’t automatically mean its better than mini led), and all if that while mostly matching or enhancing performance while staying quiet. Because benchmarks are nice but you are never going to use the performance of your laptop if it means the fans get insanely loud or the battery will die in just an hour

Like @TechChap I was a serial XPS owner until Apple Silicon came along and now I’m also trapped in an ecosphere of MacBook, iPad, iPhone, Beats etc. Meanwhile the quality and customer service of Dell has plummeted - countless bad experiences of the enterprise laptops at work and the Black Edition I bought my son for uni. 🤬 Use case & software needs are the decider but the Apple user experience, sales & after sales support are streets ahead of any other brand. Also worth pointing out that Windows laptops are increasingly coming with soldered in RAM etc. I would buy a Windows laptop again but only with an AMD chip. Intel is a busted flush.

@driven01
@driven01 2 місяці тому
@@Spoonfed78That's not at all what multi-tasking is. (Sorry, CS professional here, terms actually have meanings). That's a UI feature to organize your visible apps. You are talking about YOUR multi-tasking, not the computers. But to that point, you can use CMD-Tab, you can use the 3 finger spread on the track pad to get an overview of all your apps, you can use multiple desktops. I can actually get more done on MacOS in that regard than Windows. (One of the reasons I use it as my daily development / creative OS). As for the Vision Pro, I have NO idea. If I had $3,500 laying around, I'm doubt I'd use a Vision Pro as a productivity tool. But regardless, it's a first gen product. That can be fixed with software, and it likely will be. Good talk, thanks for that.

I think what Macs do best are the ways you interact with the computer. The things I do every moment I’m on the computer -using the keyboard, the trackpad, the speakers, are all better on the MacBook. Granted I switched in 2021 and don’t know how windows laptops feel now, but I went from a $750 dell inspiron that I had bought in 2016, with a mediocre display and speakers, and after 5 years a malfunctioning mic, malfunctioning trackpad to the point I could no longer use it, to a $900 m1 air (education discount) and I’ve had a better experience with even if both were new, with 0 signs of malfunctioning over 3 years so far.
