Also much appreciation from an old ex-British soldier to the leadership of France for showing both pragmatism and leadership in time of need for a fledgling European democracy which may one day be a real asset to the NATO alliance and maybe even a member of the EU if that is their desire. Now for the next step. If my country does not have the balls to make the decision to commit to what needs to be done maybe France will do so. I'm sure others will follow. When i read about Ukraine people saying "a pledging european democracy" i think how mis-informed people are. Is this writer going to go and fight himself if the Ukraine-Russia conflict gets out of control ? For a country such as Ukraine were many people couldn't find on the map a few years ago, that is one of the most corrupt states in the world according to the UN, that didn't allow national minorities learn and speak their own language, that made and supported pro-nazi battalions and insignia, that has since 2014 been conducting a war against Donbass and Lugansk, that has let the MI6 and CIA take control of it's secret service and operations.........i say how naive and misinformed many people in the west are.

Why is France with Total still buying LNG from Russian, making France/Belgia/Spain to the biggest russian LNG importers? It is giving Russia 600-700 million per year to Russia to pay absurd sums of money to new soldiers, that are overwhelming now Ukraine. How about France put all this money into the pocket of Ukraine? That would be a game changer. Rest is Blabla. Saying that french people didn’t think that Ukraine war is not threatening is absurd, when Putin shifted his rhetoric to officially fighting NATO one year ago.

I agree that we are already in World War III and that we (as Free Europeans) should prepare to defend ourselves in being solid supporters of Ukraine first and with that defend our democratic realm. It will be frozen out by Europe and the West permanently, Russia will become a Chinese vassal. I agree with all this and i also agree Biden’s approach is a mistake. I also think it is refreshing to see a European leader take a strong leadership role. What I wonder about is how committed Macron really is. France has a respectable military but it barely has the resources cover their own defense needs and i don’t see that changing in a serious way. If i were a european leader I would be gearing up for a major war - not to fight one but to prevent it. It is the only thing Putin understands. I also don’t want to minimize the contribution of France but compared to many other countries it has been minimal.

Levy is correct. Many of us who support Ukraine do not do so out of sympathy, but righteousness. The world has to put its foot down on bold aggression regardless of who does it and who the victim might be. Otherwise we are trapped in a world we will not want to be in. Stand up; be firm; and be true to our values and we will prevail.

Caution is not fear or appeasement. We don’t know all the reasons for his hesitation, but they could involve insufficient preparation or domestic opposition. Remember the Roosevelt administration remained neutral against the Nazis - until it wasn’t. What’s important is Scholz is on the right side of history, unlike say Orban.
