Regardless of whether you like her personality/music or not, you can tell from this interview that she has lived life and love. She has seen marriages, divorces, babies, parents dying and rich and poor. I'm sure she knows the record business better than most people and has witnessed it, just in the way music has been distributed over the decades. Whether it's vinyl, cassette, CDs, downloads or streaming. She's been through it all. On top of that, she's survived not only the music business, but literally some of her peers from her era, whether it's Michael, Prince, Whitney or George Michael. That shows she must have done something right.

No, I never liked her overly commercialised basking in pop culture celebrity image nor her at times slutty behaviour. But we're talking 30 years ago more or less. However although her music is basically just throw away pop music, she was definitely one of the best at what she did and had an enduring career spanning 2 decades at or near the top which is unusual for that here today gone tomorrow narcissistic world where you're essentially over the hill at 35.

You obviously have not listened to a lot of her music then. Yes, she does have some songs like that, especially at the beginning of her career, but she has many, many, many songs that are not that.

@@terrystorey I'm not questioning her talent, I just have never liked mainstream pop culture very much where artists on MTV for example get paid to shake their asses and look cute. There's not much substance there usually, especially nowadays. That's why Zepp appealed to so many. They in particular were the antecedent of all of that

She really is such a fascinating person. Self made, the most iconic female pop star of all time, she’s incredible. We’re lucky to still have her.
@0scJohnson0
@0scJohnson0 6 місяців тому
Not really. All celebrities have the advantage of media creating or perpetuating a persona/myth. That usually has little to do with the person in question but can be used to their advantage. Self made to me means without the benefit of media machine.
@mrjp8510
@mrjp8510 6 місяців тому
@@0scJohnson0 what you’re saying is valid, but it’s important to put things in context. The media is part of her profession. It’s not like she’s an accountant that used the media or something outrageous. As a matter of fact, the fact that she was able to control a major aspect of her image, and took control of her narrative in the media is a master class of her sheer power and “Blonde Ambition.” Her story is remarkable.

its a great interview, but shes not really "relaxed" here, but Stern approached this interview very very very well, hes was incredibly respectful and im sure Madonna walked into it knowing his history and "vulgar" innapropriate questioning methods, but most likely surprised her as his questions as they were not stupid. They were more introspective all while praising her and continuously plugging in her latest album. It was very well done.

49:15 I think the answer is most definitely David Fincher. I think she really loved him. Her diary entry from Feb 22, 1996 is quite telling: “Last night I dreamed that I was pursuing a director I was once in love with and he invited me into his home to tell me that he couldn’t be with me. I sat at his kitchen table on the verge of tears. Then he said to me, ‘You once described a man’s body as powerful. What is your definition of power now?’ and I replied, ‘Power is being told you are not loved and not being destroyed by it.’”

I’ve always admired her beauty and phenomenal creativity. She became an icon because she was fearless and believed in herself. She caused a great deal of thoughtful and heated conversations among my circle of friends, and one male friend actually asked me how I could be so intelligent and love Madonna. It’s because she caused a lot of fun while doing so many admirable, albeit controversial deeds. She is one of a kind, and will always be one of my favorite artists.

This is a great interview! I saw a side to Madonna I hadn't seen before. She seemed vulnerable and down to earth. I especially liked the conversation that begins at 40:04 about Jean-Michel Basquiat. I always found her relationship with him so fascinating. He was an enigma, so talented yet troubled. I believe out of all of the men Madonna dated he was the most compatible because she is an artist at heart. She still talks about him with love. I was looking forward to her biopic but it's been shelved. I hope she can get it into production after her tour is over. She has lived so many lives and her story deserves to be on the big screen.

I really like this interview with her. She comes across so much more humble and human in this. I think she likes to portray herself as a tough, no nonsense person, which she is, but I love her honesty and shows she can be vulnerable.

I listened to this interview in audio format, but seeing it on video has a whole other flavor, even more beautiful. Madonna is a wonderful, wise, loving person who has had an extraordinary life. It’s beautiful to hear her talk about her life, full of anecdotes. Madonna loved, suffered and lived life to the full. She has done so much for the homosexual world, for freedom, to be proud of what one is, for equality and she has always sided with the last. The world, without Madonna would be a worse world. Love you M!

God, she's gracious, articulate, warm, and intelligent here. Not pretentious or cold like she is in some other videos. Such a rare interview. I hope she gets back to whatever place this is. It really suits her.

THANK YOU so much for posting this. I've looked and waited for this entire interview for years. Finally it's here. At the time of this interview M had no idea of the Covid epidemic we were all about to go through. Ahead of her time and this interview with howard though uncomfortable in parts for her is so honest and true of her as an artist.

The key difference between Gaga and Madonna (not to sound clicle bringing this back) is that Madonna had very different backgrounds. She was born poor in Michigan and went broke to New York in the 80s. Stephanie in the other hand was born super rich, studied in the best schools. Gaga had it MUCH easier, I get the beef

This is the reason why we love her. She's fun she's smart she's thoughtful. She's not doing things for purely attention. She's not a superficial Lady who would do anything to get the media talk about her. Unlike some lady whose dumb name shall remain nameless. Madonna is like a true Mother figure. After my mom, she really is the person i look up to the most. She's brave, hard worker, intelligent, humble, creative etc. She deserved the titre icon and Mother of pop. She's so interesting to listen to. She's an exemple.
@Free420Love

The same words you used to describe her are also absolutely applicable to Stefani- Gaga’s real name. She’s an incredibly talented human being who uses a monicker to make art - as so many of the greats do. Tony Bennett had no problem doing gorgeous albums and tours with her. Bradley Cooper certainly didn’t regret hiring her for “A Star Is Born”, for which she became the first woman to win an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Grammy Award in one year. You think you’re praising Madonna, but you’re actually insulting her by disgustingly tearing down an equally prolific, hard-working and talented woman. They had a petty brush up 13 years ago thanks to Madonna’s ego, but she is now, and has been for long while, a fierce supporter of Gaga, and would be pissed to see this comment. Like she said when she was congratulating her on her Oscar win & taking photos with her, “don’t mess with Italian girls.” And if we’re being real - Gaga is a great musical artist, AND a great actress, hence the Oscar. Madonna tried her hand at films, and was sometimes decent, but where she really shined was her music videos. And those videos inspired generations of musicians, including Gaga. They’re BOTH superstars. They’ve BOTH had massive, epic careers. You don’t actually seem to know much about either of them. Madonna actually notoriously hasn’t been super nice to many people over the years (including Gaga at one point, over a decade ago, and fans at points in her career) & people often brushed it off as her being a diva, but Gaga has managed to get to equal levels of fame and still be incredibly kind, gracious, and ALWAYS grateful. That’s their main difference, honestly. The ego. She isn’t nearly as humble as you apparently think she is…and that makes me question how much you actually know about her.😂 She also started out & peaked at a different time in society…but ultimately doesn’t change the behavior. But she’s Madonna, right? It appears you need to do your homework on BOTH of these powerhouses. There’s no need to tear another woman’s incredible career and unending hard work in order to praise another woman who has worked just as hard - just for longer. Gaga’s shows are so physical that she’s done permanent damage to her little body and is in constant pain, but still continues to put on epic performances. Trying to slight her and make absurd comments, like she’s only famous because she does things for attention is absolutely laughable. Seems the last time you actually kept up on Gaga’s career was 2009. Hilarious. Try again. Pitting strong women against each other is so gross. They’ve both been amazing advocates for the LGBTQ community, since the beginning of their careers, and have helped make ALL people feel empowered to just be themselves, and embrace their differences, and each other. This was an embarrassing comment from you, and a slight to her legacy. She would hate this.

@@lonetardigrade 😂😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤮 The OP literally ignored any and every questionable thing that Madonna has done over the course of her career, and completely bashed another female performer for absolutely no reason because they’re OBSESSED with her, but when I point out that she’s flawed like everyone else, and say we don’t have to put another female performer down just to say Madonna is great, when both of these women have amazing careers… But I HAVE celebrity worship!? Hilarious. And delusional. Why are you watching this video?? I happen to love music, that’s why. You’re watching this entire interview, you love Madonna. Therefore, according to yourself, you must also worship celebrities.🙄 Ffs.
