I’ve just replaced the Denon 6700 with the Denon 8500 AH as more suitable to pair with the Magnetar UDP 900. Projector is a JVC DLA NZ7 or will be when it arrives - this, like the Denon, has just had a £2,000 price reduction but beware I was offered the PRO version which is identical except for gold lens ring and revised model number, which would not be good for re-sale purposes as PRO model suggests having heavy use, but I decided to go on the ‘wait list’ for the domestic version. Speakers are all Bowers and Wilkins plus a REL sub. Using the high level connection.

so how do you know the processing is by Magnetar vs Sony 95L TV? both is being shown on same TV...did you turn off the TV processing when play magnetar??? just what is the reference point?

I bet this is the type of device that Joe Rogan uses to listen to the highest end music quality on planet earth. A codec called Elite-AX. Elite-AE is incredibly expensive and incredibly fast and the most perfect sound quality one will ever hear.

I just wish the 820 wasn't so plasticky, especially the opening and closing (reminds me of a cassette case!). My old mid range pioneer Blu-ray spinner was so much better in that respect.

If you ask most people, if they were to win the lottery, they would say they would want to buy a house or a really nice car or something along those lines. I on the other hand would spend every penny on the sickest stereo system I could possibly get....and I think I just found the disk player that would go with it

How fun! So happy that you are doing video AND audio reviews! This Magnetar is so high-end, a comparison of my Panasonic DP-UB820 didn’t even come up!😂 I listen to CDs on my standalone CD player hooked up to my listening only 2 Channel system in another room, but I think I am going to test my Panasonic to hear how it sounds with CDs. Probably doesn’t compare to my other system and especially wouldn’t compare to the three premium players referenced in your video. I don’t have any SACD or DVD Audio discs but it’s fun to see these kinds of reviews. Please keep it up! PS: Joni!!!!!!!!!!🥰

If you want to hear CD's at their best, stick with your CD player, these play everything models make a mess of good clean audio.

My new Magnetar UDP900 has not played a 4K disc yet - that’s because I am busy playing my CD’s and SACD’s on it using Denon Pure Direct Amplifier 6700 - proper audiophile sound, silent noise floor. I’ve got a JVC 8K laser projector on order so I am waiting with anticipation to try out the video. I would also add that the Magnetar is a real ‘statement’ piece in the same way a Rolex watch is compared to a Seiko - both do the same job but one is over-engineered to perfection.

@@chibbyylol I have several Seiko watches and a TAG for ‘best’ but kudos to Grande Seiko which are a step above your average Seiko. Rolex still has that public perception of being best although there are some real high end timepieces out there .

@@ALEXANDER-mx6dk It sounds very clean - just like my Marantz 600 series CD player connected to a Rupert Neve headphone amplifier powered by a Russ Andrews power supply -cost £2000.00 - for an extra £800.00 you can buy the Magnetar UDP 900 which sounds identical plus the Magnetar plays 4K and BluRay. I used Grado PS1000 headphones (£2,000) for the comparison.

it is a great one, don't change it, Unless you decide to buy the better version "Panasonic DP-UB9000" There is no clear development or difference in image quality between all current Blu-ray players, Except that the price of some of them is exaggerated, We hope that Oppo or Panasonic will enter the market again by releasing a new Blu-ray players after many years, Unfortunately, that will be impossible if the Physical Media market continues to die.😢

Great review and I'm so happy I bought my oppo 205 and panasonic 820. I use the oppo just for my music and the panasonic for everything else. This player looks great though.

Panasonic is always a great brand. I have a budget Sony 2K Blu-ray player, but my Panasonic TV's HDR Remaster and Resolution upscaling features make the picture look so much better! I'm not that bothered to upgrade to a 4K Blu-ray player. This is like getting half the benefits for a quarter of the price, especially when you consider disc purchases.

Caleb, That looks to be a great player. I have a Sony UBP-X800M2 connected via 48 gbps HDMI cable to a Sony 65A8H. Both do a great job with audio/video via EARC through a Denon AVR and Polk Signature Series speakers. Thanks for the video.

Important to note also: This player can output DSD via the DoP protocol allowing - with HDMI connected to an audio breakout box - to extract the audio into an external high end DAC. This will be critical for audiophiles.

This is incorrect. The UDP800 and UDP900 only can output either 88.2 PCM or 2.82 DSD. The official HDMI license does not support DoP.

Still running an all-region OPPO 103D (!) here... not enough UHD material in my physical media collection to justify an upgrade... But the Magnetar certainly looks like a magnificent machine.

The region code change on the Oppo is a pain in the butt to use compared to the Magnetar i also have a 103D but bought a Magnetar UDP-800 last year and the Magnetar region code change is so much better and easier to use

Happy Oppo 105D owner here. The day it will die, I'll buy this Magnetar. The discrete analogue output for the 5.1 audio is critical in my system, as well as Blu-ray audio and multichannel SACD capabilities.

My only gripe with my Panasonic player is how loud it is spinning the disc and seeking etc. In the next review I'd love some more detail about how the players compare for mechanical noise when playing discs.

Hello. I purchased a UB9000 five months ago. After two months, it began to make noise when playing Blu-rays during the first 5-15 minutes of the film, then the noise stops. With 4K Blu-rays, the noise is louder and persists beyond the beginning of the film!I thought I was the only one with a faulty drive.Have you contacted the dealership about the warranty?I did not, because I was waiting to make sure. Anyway, after the first 5-15 minutes, the drive is dead quite (simple blurays, not 4K).A reviewer of blu ray players told me that it is a defective disc and I should demand a replacement.But I'm afraid that the next one is just like this.

After purchasing and installing the Magnetar UDP900, Updated the firmware. Watched several 4K movies. The 4K Digital quality is pristine and sound quality is superb. Not sure why it freezes on a few 4K movies such as Dune, Beverly Hills Cop 1, Valerian to name a few. Scanning backwards prior to the freezing part, it will play without freezing. Maybe it needs an another Firmware update to remedy the freezing. My Panasonic UBD9000 kept freezing up on 4K Midway and 4K Knives Out until Panasonic sent a new Firmware Update.

Very good review. I definitely would like to buy a Magnetar UDP-900 in the future. The optical disc ecosystem is still relevant enough to do so, I think. Besides that, there are some rarities that only can be bought on CD, DVD and alike, which is another good reason for keeping this ecosystem alive.

Great video as always, Here is a question for "You Asked" series. How does Panasonic's HDR Tone Mapping feature "HDR Optimizer" for different display output brightnesses compare to internal TV HDR Tone mapping. I am thinking purchasing the Panasonic UB820 and heard alot of good things about its HDR Optimizer. Currently getting away with an Xbox One S for 4K Blu-rays.

I'll stick with my Panny UB820. Some of the Panasonics have additional features like darkening of subtitles which is sometimes very useful, especially for movies in Dolby Vision.

I had the UB820 but sold it since I use plex to stream remux 4k movies instead of buying discs. My question to you is what setting do you playback dvd 480p movies at? I have a collection older 80 tv shows that are only available on dvd and want to watch them in the best quality.

Great video about Magnetar! I am a disc collector, despite streaming I agree a disc plays both video and sound to a much higher quality. I own a very heavily modified Reavon UBR X200 by Brent Rowe , upgrades to power supply ,low jitter clocks with a pre voltage regulator with upgraded capacitors on the analogue board along with magic pads on all the important parts Picture and sound wise it's outstanding I am very impressed with Magnetar and its operating system I'm hoping those transfer down to the Reavon as the Magnetar is much smoother running when it comes to its software.

I have been crazy about multichannel music listening since 2009, and started collecting SACD's, Hybrid multichannel SACD's, Blu-ray Audio, and DVD-Audio discs since then. I started with 2 different Denon players (one top of their line at the time) that both failed after 10 and 12 years (both unable to be fixed for lack of parts) . I moved onto a Sony UBP1100ES that I have had for the last 4 years because it was one of the few at the time that would play all the surround formats that I use. This new Magnetar UDP900 is very expensive, but it seems to be very well built and can handle all the formats. Exceptional quality these days I'm afraid costs a lot of coin.

Nice that these players exist because some fine SACDs & DVD-Audio discs appeared in the nought-ies and 2010's. I'm still using a Cambridge Audio universal disc spinner for those. I sold a friend my old Oppo-80 which is still working (repaired once about 6 years ago).

You should really do a video on the Vizio V-series 5.1 system (V51-H6). Finding it in open box excellent at Best Buy, best decision I’ve made in a while. Good, clean sounding sub, plenty of customizability in the settings, all with WIRED surround speakers, so no lag from the soundbar to the speakers. Also includes wall mounts IN THE BOX! No other company really does that!

I’d like to know a bit more about what actually makes 4K Blu-ray players look different? Like assuming both players support Dolby Vision what is the difference? I assume there may be different HDR tone mapping or upscaling options, but if you have a high end TV doing the tone mapping and the resolution is the same as your TV so there is no upscaling, where do the differences come in?

I want, but really can't justify as I have a Reavon X200. The the Reavon handling audio discs and first watches and focused listening. I have my discs backed up to hard drives I use my Zidoo for re-watches and casual listening. The combo suits my needs. My Reavon I have had since Aug 2021 without issues.

After coming from Pioneer BD players, one of my favorite things about the Oppo players was the speed _combined_ with the other aspects of quality. Anyway, I wish someone would make an ultra-high-end 4K disc transport. I already have the high-end audio setup handled by an AV processor, so I don’t need any audio components raising the price of a player. Just an ultra-reliable Blu-ray/DVD/CD disc player with HDMI out, fast, stable, and reliable software, long-lasting hardware components, etc. Regardless of software which is all over the place, it always seems like in order to get high-end hardware, these companies all want to cram expensive audio components into them, (in this manner, justifiably) cranking up the price as a result.

I want a mega changer that plays (and stores) every kind of disc from CDs to UHD Blu-rays. I think they are the swan song for optical media. Basically, I want this but with a capacity of hundreds of discs. I don't need SACD support or anything exotic, just CD, DVD, Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray.

Interesting, that the settings interface is exactly the same as the Oppo UDP-203 player, but being you cannot get the Oppo player anymore (RIP), I am happy someone is filling that need Oppo left behind.

I am an old OPPO owner (BDP-95); so I need a new 4K spinner as I believe improvements over the Xbox Series X that I use now are possible. I am watching on an LG G3 65" with a nice Atmos room. This unit has piqued my interest!

My question is related to my audio setup ..so i currently have the Nakamichi Shockwafe Elite 7.2.4 setup with the TV I am thinking about doing either a sonos or bose home theater setup sonos: Sonos Arc soundbar Sonos era 300 (qty 2) Sonos Sub (Gen 3) I checked out your review for this one which got me interested Bose: Bose Smart Soundbar 900 Bose Surround Speakers 700 Bose Bass Module 700 Keep in mind my main concern is movies and TV shows i dont listen to music that much. I will not be using an apple phone for the setup I'm in the android eco system. Would love to get your recommendation. Thanks!

I have the Dp-UB820 and it works fine but always looking for something better. This might be the answer but I would probably look at the UDP800 first as it's half the price and I'm not made of money. Having a different player makes my 820 the backup and that's not bad either.

I have over 3000 discs - plus about 1500 cds so I am seriously considering this if I have a good year - I am not going to lose out like I did with the OPPO players. I already have pano 9000 region free and a couple other Sonys 1000, 1100, 800 mark 2 - I want to make sure I have a spare

You can still get them second hand as I just stepped up to a 203 from my Samsung k8500 which I thought was an a amazing blu ray player until now. Idk I'm tempted having a best buy plus membership of buying a panasonic 9000 just to do a side by side or if I can find a hifi shop that carries this Magnetar 900.

Holy crap, I thought my OPPO was expensive... but it's good to see some activity in the high-end optical disc player space. But I DO wish there'd be something that is as good, and compatible, but a little more stripped down. Instead of trying to have all those outputs, it exists the be the BEST player to slot into a larger system you've already built out. I'd almost NEVER use any of the analogue outs, because I have a lovely Marantz amp that I think sounds fantastic and is more than good enough to handle all the analogue. AT MOST, maybe a stereo XLR out, and a headphone jack on the front. But I'd be down to just have Ethernet, Power, and 2 HDMI ports on the back, but still play EVERYTHING, with good sturdy build, great PSU, and some decent shielding. Oh and some REALLY... REALLY GREAT vibration damping and isolation. And a word on Reolink, love them myself, I have the Duo 2, but that is not a 16MP Sensor, it's 2 seperate 8MP(4k) Sensors stitched together. It's a great system though, I've had our Duo 2 for MONTHS, and am still impressed by how wide the horizontal FOV is, and with the higher resolution of the new Duo 3, it's probably a better choice than a PTZ camera for most installs IMO. Final note: lol, looks like Magnetar just uses OPPO's firmware :P

Optical players are important because video streaming formats have lower bitrates and lack much of the additional content of disc based video. Plus, not all content is available on streaming services. Also, SACD is a great format, but Sony dropped the ball on their converters and you can only output in analog. I love gear with balanced output.

Balanced output is only needed on longer lengths. RCA is all you need for shorter cables

It is a flex, but it does help reduce noise. Single point is fine, but the big boy processors and amplifiers typically have XLR. At $3k, it better have them!@@justinbyrne5736

Thank you fir the video, I think I’m going to have to splash the cash as my Oppo 205 is developing a fault, it just freezes when I switch it on and is locked in the hello screen with nothing functioning, the only cure is to pull the plug and start again, such a shame as I love the Oppo, but I guess nothing lasts forever, this machine seems to be the way to go.

Maybe I missed it, but did you connect the UDP900 to your Anthem integrated, via coax?....and did you find an appreciable difference in sound quality using the disc player DACs (via analog connection) vs using the Anthem DACs (via coax connection)? It would surprise me if you found the Anthem DACs to be inferior here.

Digital Trends: what I would like to know is if I can/should retire my Panasonic DP-9000 from a few years ago based on expected video and audio gains from the Magnetar 900? I'm not hearing anyone say I'm gonna notice a significant difference in CD audio playback, and I really do not expect a video improvement from the Magnetar - at all. While I would very much like SACD capability, which the Panny does not have, $3000 for that feature alone is a stretch. So am I OK with the Panasonic 9000? Any comments on that?

I really wish I could see what I’m missing by watching Blu-ray’s on my Xbox. I don’t want to buy an expensive disk player when I don’t watch tons of disks but then again I don’t know what I’m missing. Blu-ray on the Xbox is still way better than streaming. Have you made a video that demonstrates the differences?

If you are going to use a high end external dac then it's not really a thing as he said. I would rather splash out on a seperate dac or intergrated receiver. A transport is a transport. My Sony UDP x700 plays pretty much anything. Fun review though :)

Yes and no you can pay extra for firmware that makes it region free but its an extra $100 or euros for said firmware otherwise the player is locked

I have a Sony - UBP-X1100ES connected via HDMI to a Yamaha CX-5200 per/processor. The Sony does very well on most discs but won't play most video files on the USB port. And it won't play DVD-R Audio discs. So I kept my Yamaha DB-1040 for all of those.

Having heavily invested in the Oppo players which i still have and thankfully are still working would i risk buying a Magnetar? Not if the are anything like the Raveon players which i tried and rejected. I even tried the Panasonic UB9000 and whilst it's video performance was good, the audio sounded way too edgy for me. Even the Oppo players required upgrading to obtain a smooth clean audio.. So for now i will wait and see just how long Magnetar are still around for, the market for these players must be very small, and what happens when they go wrong?

I have a question. Is the Magnetar UDP800 and UDP900 a multi-region (region unlocked) Blu-ray and DVD player and with PAL and NTSC conversion? In all honesty, as much as I can see all the wonderful features these two players have, if it can't play Blu-Rays and DVDs from other regions, this wouldn't be a complete solution for me. I would love to have all the premium features that Magnetar players have with the state of the art video and audio playback, but I also need to be able to play North American region discs and all international regions, particularly from the U.K. There are so many movies and TV series that haven't be released in region A/ 1. Can the Magnetar do that? I can't find the information in reviews, or easily on Magnetar's website.

Yes they can get it unlocked. I have the 800 and it can play anything. This also unlocks iso and bdmv playback.

I have the Sony UBP-X700M which is under $200 and does everything I need for my 4k discs. However I wished someone would make a multi disc player for 4k, like the old CD jukeboxes.
