Love your videos but I’m going to be brutally honest here. This pseudo analysis just made my brain hurt while listening. We’ve been perfectly enjoying 100”-120” projection home theaters at 1080p. Granted, at these sizes 4K brought the resolution benefit that not even staff rolls at worst cases get noticed in terms of resolution. And that’s it! Beyond 4K the quality of the image is much more important than resolution. This is just pure marketing to upsell murky LCD tech to last another round. I call total BS for labeling 8K mandatory even at 98”. Even a relatively low contrast 5000:1 projected image with grey blacks are more realistic by its nature than a hyped up LCD set with its murky, hazy picture and LCD spectrum. 8K sets fail because no one cares from one side and there wasn’t any content on the other side. In addition to this what kind of motion resolution do you have with 24p movies? What’s the point? To this day I can’t let go of my reference Panasonic Plasma set because of motion resolution.

The 8k bandwidth issue works both ways too, the streaming services already compress and squeeze their streams as much as possible regardless of your home internet speed to save on their server capacity and as a result their bottom line. You think they will be in a hurry to beam 8k streams to us en masse when it’s such a minor difference?! It will be more effective compression techniques that allow this, not faster internet speeds. And on that point a less compressed 4k stream may actually look better than a heavily compressed 8k stream at a hypothetical like for like bitrate (See the difference between a 4K Netflix stream and a 4K Blu-ray Disc).

Watching 4k content displayed at best buy compared to most 4k movies is insane. Displayed content look like 8k, and that's my issue with 4k since I don't game. I just watch movies. Any minor upgrade in picture quality for a reasonable price is fine with me.
@LoganT5 годин тому
I think 8K TVs and 8K content will become more of a thing once a new compression algorithm comes out. H.264 brought in 1080P content and H.265 HEVC ushered in 4K content. Once H.266 (VCC or Versatile Video Coding) is adopted more, we’ll start seeing 8K content.

I don't think we have to worry about 8K while we are stuck with 24p.

8K, as much as it should be the standard now, just didn't take off. 3D was the same way, it was a gimmick and got leapfrogged by 4K. The general consumer is going to go for what's affordable, sub $1000. 3D never really did that, only 4K did (at the time). OLEDs are facing similar issues, as while they did dip below $1000, a lot of the improvements to it are still being price gated at higher tiers. Especially when Mini-LEDs come with a lot of the same features, for less. In terms of 8K content, I doubt it'll happen, the cameras needed are even more expensive than the current 4K cameras, and even with streaming services adopting AV-1 encoding (to save on bandwidth), 8K is still going to be a lot to implement. Physical media is already dying, as much as adoption has increased over the last few years, fewer, and fewer retailers are offering it anymore. Best Buy is ditching physical media, and Walmart maybe looking to do the same. I agree about the Bandwidth cap insanity. As I live in Canada, where its worse, the resellers have low prices and no caps, where as the main suppliers (being the majority of holding customers), have big prices and caps. Up here, we essentially have a Duo-poly for Telecommunications, so only 2 big companies own the telecommunications networks, for the majority of the country. Its just a rabbit hole up here for how nuts it is.

4K didn’t really take off until HDR entered the picture (pun intended or not). I never noticed the resolution difference between a HD and 4K set without HDR content. So I propose that we need Super Ultra HDR for 8K that even goes beyond BT2020 colorspace. 8K must support 100k nits 😂 also. Of course I’m joking but adding resolution isn’t going to be a game changer just like it was for 4K. 8K needs more than just more pixels. It needs something that’s obviously an improvement over what many quality 4K sets can already do.

4k is the sweet spot since I only game in 4k for pc gaming and I don't game in less than 4k on pc. I game in 4k for every game even when the graphics card struggles to play the games with decent frame rates. Even the current 4090 gpu struggles with newer certain titles of games in native 4k with ray tracing with dlss upscaling off and hdr. If pc gaming supported games with dual graphics cards with native 4k hdr with ray tracing and dlss upscaling off was supported. I would have bought and used 2 graphics cards instead of just using a single graphics card.

Forget 8k no movie is shot in 4k yet, even for a movies like Avanger endgame, only about half hour of the movie was shot in 4k rest all are was in HD, its all upscaled from HD to 4k, the reason for not shooting in 4k is the amount of memory space it required was not worth shooting in 4k is what the director said. Dont buy an 8k tv yet you wont have a bandwidth to stream anything yet, wait for another 5 years.
@danishprince27606 годин тому
We're still many years away from 8K being even close to relevancy. There's not even that much content that fully utilizes 4K yet and for the vast majority of people they won't be able to even percieve the difference between 4K and 8K

As someone with that gig internet at a stable price, etc., the problem is the streaming companies. They still limit their files and 4kBR is where it's at. I believe we will get AI upscaling before Netflix and others up their limits.

Do the 8k TVs do a sufficient job of upscaling? YES, i would agree with your 98"+ screen size comment. If your looking at 98" or larger TV then it could be worth the investment, if the technology in the 8k TVs is going to hold up until more 8k content comes out.

Did I hear correctly? Unlimited gigabit broadband is a tough find in the US? Well, I’m watching this episode on my all you can eat gigabit service here in the UK, and I thought that we were well behind the curve when it came to that sort of service.
@evildude1096 годин тому
It's very patchwork here. US cities that have had internet access for a long time are now in some ways worse off than rural. My parents are in the woods but have symmetric gigabit fiber because the infrastructure was only built like fifteen years ago and fiber was already commonplace. Whereas in some cities we have coaxial cable from the 1980s that was never upgraded, which can just barely push single direction gigabit. My current internet connection is 800 down and only 50 up for this reason.
@superchargedsteve34116 годин тому
Let's be real, hardly anyone is buying a 90"+ TVs, for price and space reasons. Especially in this economy and inflation. So really 8K makes no sense unless you have a bar or restaurant or something.

@babaksabri33526 годин тому
Great topic! You've made a valid point about the Gigabit internet requirement for accessing 8K content, which unfortunately isn't readily available to many users in North America, particularly those in rural areas. The underlying issue lies in the inadequate internet infrastructure. Until Gigabit internet becomes universally accessible at reasonable prices, 8K TVs will remain primarily accessible to urban dwellers and affluent individuals. In my view, 4K resolution meets the needs of most users admirably.

I think the problem is we didnt aim high enough, if they had gone for 16k tvs then everyone would clearly see the difference and it woudl be a big hit.
