That charger is overkill, they make much simpler and cheaper chargers for lead-acid batteries. Also, the 30-amp power supply is way overkill, that radio probably only draws a maximum of 10 amps at full volume. Although, the wiring job is done well and looks very professional.

I built a car stereo boombox around this same time you made this video so that I can use it with my outdoor projector system and have never felt happy with the results. Seeing this video, now I know why. I have always called mine version 1 expecting at some point in the future to remake it, I have a feeling that time is coming very soon. Thanks for the video, gave me some great ideas on how to improve the one I made previously.

Made one myself using lipo batteries, a 18cm sub, two hybrid high/low speakers and one 8cm mid speaker . I added a bluetooth module and leds. Love it, so thanks for the idea.would you like to see vids of it? Tho it draws 12amps avg You should also seal the boxes lid with some rubber, in my case it boosted the sound a lot.

my friends and I use to do this back in the late 80's. We made a portable box with 4 12" speakers and another box for a car stereo and amp and powered it with a car battery. We would use my friends parents mini van, take out all the back seats, and would cruse down the strip. Now we didn't care that we was in a mini van, when your 16 and 17 years old, thumping music that can easily be heard 50 feet away and hanging with your friends was a blast. AAaahhhh... the good Ol' days.........

Must have been 1965, or perhaps 64 not sure which, when I saw my first car radio run from 110 volts. It didn't work great, but after some tinkering, we got it playing well enough so listen to the KOMA Good Guys (KOMA was a very powerful radio station in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Everyone in the Midwest tuned their AM Radios to 1520 anytime after the sun sat!) My buddy didn't have a radio in his bedroom, and wanted to be able to listen after his huge family (mom-dad and 8 brothers and sisters!) went to bed. So we visited the midnight auto supply (we broke into the local wrecking yard after dark) and acquired (stole) a car radio from an old Chrysler (they had fancy radios!) to power it, first we tried an old battery charger (found at the local dump ground) but the rectification and filtration were just not that good and there was a Lot of noise over the speakers, (2 count 'em 2) front and back speakers! So we tinkered some more, and I think we finally found a way to filter the power from my old Lyonal train transformer through an old motorcycle battery, and at long last we had radio! While at first all we could get was the local AM radio station, another visit to the midnight auto supply found us with a pair of rear mount radio antenna's with very long cables that allowed us to mount one antenna on each window of his bedroom, we ran a ground wire from the normal mounting points where the antennas grounded out on the car body, and drove a six foot long copper rod into the ground. That night, we had KOMA and the Beetles blasted away through his bedroom. We thought we were in rock and roll paradise! Then his dad came in and saw what we had built. Now he was an old fart, he had farmed most of his life, and was probably the most honest man in town, so all the parts from the Midnight auto supply were returned and the music died. Nice to see that our idea survived. We were lucky his old man didn't find our stash of 8mm porn films, secretly ordered from the back pages of some men's magazine. Man those were disappointing, all they consisted of were some very blurry black and white films of naked women playing baseball! If you ran them at 1/2 speed though you could almost see nipple!

The boombox I built like that back in 1995 still works great, though it is on its third battery. Those lead-acid batteries only last 3-5 years. I used a Radio Shack 40 watt EQ booster, two 6.5 inch 2-way speakers, and originally a 15AH battery from Science Surplus. Box was made from 3/8 inch plywood, glued together and L brackets for corner support. I meant to put in hinges for the lid, but just having it press fit into some weather stripping held it in place pretty well. I plugged my Walkman into the aux input, and enjoyed my favorite tapes. Of course now I play my music from my phone's headphone out.

Wow this takes me back. I made something similar with a radio and speakers from my mums Austin and used a neighbours motorbike battery for power. The box I put it in doubled as the seat on my go cart. I was about 10. Good times :D

If you put a piece of rubber or foam on the border of the lid and fasten it with screws you will get much louder and deeper sound because no air pressure is escaping. Please try it, you will hear a big difference!

@rudyc.421
@rudyc.421 7 років тому
Bissekat1 Make sure you're using free air type of speakers in sealed enclosures. You just gotta flip your subwoofer over by the magnet area and look for any small screen looking vents or ports between baffle and magnet part of subwoofer speaker, that's a free air. Some have a circle port about 3/4 inches on center of magnet that's also a free air.
@reanimator39
@reanimator39 7 років тому
what are the magnets in this design?))) it is very funny. The cover must jump from bass sounds. And you need to make either the phase inverter or the system of "closed box" . But in any case, to do the cover tightly closed(latches) sealed

Instead of the switch, why not use relays? You could have set up the relays directly to the power supply. Whenever there is power from the power supply, it could disconnect the battery and connect it directly to the power supply to allow the battery to charge and it would do this automatically instead of having to add funky switches in the front. Then the only switch you would need is one connected to the ignition wire of the stereo so you could turn the car stereo on and off.

The local car store here "cost less auto parts" has some kind of set that looks like a asian clone of the JVC bluetooth set for even lower cost. I'd take a look at Greatscott's bluetooth speaker possibly build your own Aux or Bluetooth boom box with something cheap inside like a mp3 player or radio if you don't want to hook your phone up to it. I started building mine in May 2015 and kinda finished it in April 2016. Now I have a portable bluetooth speaker with radio that goes for 8 hours of music on a decent volume. I got to use a lot of old parts that were laying around. My handlebar is from an old bus, my speakers are Magnats from 1998 or so. My charging system is an external automatic charger that goes into mains and is directly connected to the battery via XLR plug. The whole system weighs about 12 kg ...... But that's okay, it'll help you become super strong over time ;) I will do a UKposts video at some point but that will take some time

SLA is by far the best choice still as they are dirt cheap and they have a good life span if looked after. The cells are also the perfect 12v, so perfect for PC and car electronics. Other technologies are suitable when you're really concerned about weight and money is no object.

+Toxicity because lead acid batteries dont blow up in your face unlike lipos,plus the need for a over charge over discharge circuit,plus they supply less and less power when heated up,not only that,lipos are dangerous because they can detonate like a bomb at any moment,once i had a friend that was soo happy to get a Samsung Galaxy Note 7,3 days later he was treated for 3rd degree burns on his hands,now,why dont you tell me why you think Lithium Polymer batteries are safer than Plain Safe lead acid batteries
@Toxicity1987
@Toxicity1987 7 років тому
+Trodded Sloth LiFePO has nothing to do with Lipo batteries, thats are 2 very different technologies. One big advantage of LiFePO is that they are save, they can't blow up. Thats why they are good replacement for Lead-Acid batteries.

Just get a car battery, a pair of decent speakers and a car radio, hook up the battery to the radio power in, and your speakers to your radio speaker output and you are done.. in the simplest way possible ofc.. you can usa any car battery charger to charge up this thing

just because its more expensive or "premium" does not mean its better. you sounded like a complete snob just now and i almost punched my laptop.

@@dcfuksurmom although I'm usually against snobs, in Audio more expensive typically does mean better. Of course there are those brands to avoid that are just inflated such as BOSE.

Chris McCaulley Where have you been? Manufacturers have been doing this for various products for years. As long as it's designed properly then there should be little issue. That being said, for various reasons, I would not recommend building one the same as what he did. Anyone wanting to make one for themselves should research the relevant info first to educate themselves on the various things, including proper speaker designing/building. You can't just slap some speakers in a box and think that it is going to sound good. There's a lot more to it than that.
