In this video I will show you how I combined an old speaker of mine with a cheap bluetooth receiver module. I made a small power amp for the speaker and put all the electronics in a hidden place. I hope you enjoy the video.

By the way, if you want to power the bluetooth receiver from the same power source, using a ground loop isolator (1:1 transformer) between its output and the amp's input does the trick.

I was trying to play my iPhone late the other night. Mrs was in bed. So I put some wood brothers on while I read a book. But it seemed really really distant. So I turned it up. It still sounded distant and echoey. I shook my phone. Stopped it. Started it. So I tried a little bit of Iron Maiden. Same deal. It really stumped me for a minute. Then it went really loud and quite again. That's when I suddenly realised I'd left my phone connected to the bluetooth speaker … next to the bed! 😱 That's why my wife is now storming down the hall, like Darth bleedin Vader, to very angrily ask me if I knew what the f@*king time is. True story. Anyway. I'm gonna make one of them. Thanks. 👍🏻

As you say at the end of each video "Stay Creative" I personally feel that being creative is not the problem. Becoming creative generates passion, ♡ and glory. Being creative (construction) -- is far better than (destruction!!!) I have concluded that it should be a person's given right to do whatever they please, do whatever you love as long as it does not negatively affect another person!!! ☆Long live love, passion and creativity!☆

@fablungo
@fablungo 8 років тому
What I really like about your videos is that you show us the experimentation you went through and for me there is more to learn from that than just a step by step, start to finish solution! Would have been nice if you could have got the receiver and the amp on the same supply as a solution to that may have solved (or at least helped to solve) one that I have.
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 8 років тому
Fabrizio Lungo You can get rid of the distortions by adding a 1:1 transformer between the audio signal and the audio input of the amp.
@fablungo
@fablungo 8 років тому
GreatScott! Ahhh.... That's what I am currently doing. I was hoping there would be a solution on the power supply side of things but you can't really have a 1:1 transformer for the DC voltage. Using two transformers from the AC side is what you have done here to get the isolation. Maybe a 20:1 transformer (for 240V down to 12V) connected to a 1:1 transformer before any sort of bridge rectifier might work?

This is cool but honestly from a main electrical stand point you should of installed a electrical octagon box in the ceiling (a retro one so you can install it with just a hole like you made) because atm it seems like you have your mains attached with a open terminal which could start a fire, would fail an electrical inspection and could potentially hurt someone that is rooting around up there in the future. Experience to back this up is i'm a electrician in Canada and electrical code dictates that you need to have a bonded certified electrical box housing anything above 15v. Anything under 15v can be free aired.

Listen up +GreatScott! , fellow german here. I hate to be the smart ass all the taime but when it comes to security, well here goes my rant. That power supply is not rated for moist enviroments. There are enough cheap ass IP67 rated supply modules out there. Why am i so concerned? Well you are instructing people on how to handle AC power. But that job is not done with just turnig all off and then back on again. Not all countries have regulations concerning protective circuit breaker like an RCD/FI. And to the rest out there: There is no need to be afraid of electricity. But security goes first ...or not if you like the smell of BBQ in your bathroom ;-) Anyways, i enjoy your videos and subscribed. If you need information about electrical safety, feel free to contact me.
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 8 років тому
DasIllu Why is my ceiling a moist area? If that would be true, I would have more problems than a lack in security.
@DasIllu
@DasIllu 8 років тому
GreatScott! Warm Air usually rises up. And warm air has a lot more capacity to transport moisture. (ref. relative humidity vs. absolute humidity). So when you for example take a shower, you have a very moist air seeking it's way through any hole. Ones arrived in that space between concrete and ceiling it'll propably condense at the first thing that is colder than it's surroundings. Guess what... Slow temperature changing metals in your power supply. Once enough water accumulated, it will start to flow according to surface tension etc and maybe short out or change resistance of some components needed to regulate the whole thing. While there is a bunch of other reasons why you shouldn't do it this way (i.e. VDE) this is one of the major problems. This might work without any problems for you. But what about a family of 4-5 people all showering in the morning when the roof above is still cold? See, just because it works for you doesn't mean it is safe for all the people you adress in your videos. Felt the need to point that out. Those 'stupid' rules are there for saving lifes. For unexpected circumstances too often cost lifes. regards from Saarbrücken
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 8 років тому
DasIllu Sure
@DasIllu
@DasIllu 8 років тому
GreatScott! I used to work as an electrician in explosive enviroments and maybe i am a bit biased. But i also learned how simple circuits may go rogue on you once they are exposed to conditions they are not designed for. And to just put some more VDE in. If you are to power down a whole room, it is not done with confirming that the lights are out and the hairdryer doesn't work anymore for that you can accomplish by breaking just the neutral wire and still have potentially deadly 230 or 110 Volts. Sometimes it isn't even the electric shock that is the most harmful thing. Just getting startled enough to fall off a ladder can harm you as well. I encountered such situations several times even when i was most careful about security

OMG thank you for this video. It helped me understand why my external bluetooth device was making noise when I plugged it into my cigarette lighter and onto my amp. Then I went and took one of those external batteries and I was able to run power to my device without the feedback. Now my only question is, what can I do to charge my device at the same time while I am driving? Do you have any suggestions? I will be taking this to my audio guy but I don't want him ripping me off or even worse destroying my vehicle!

Nice project, and good info via instructables. I'm wondering why you use a premium op-amp like the 5534, when a TL071 would suffice? Or am I wrong?
