When I was a kid, I went to a birthday party in winter, and they wanted to go out sledding, cause they have GIGANTIC HILL. So of course I, the itty-bitty dare-devil, went out and loved it. Until the birdthay girl's scardey-cat older sister wanted to ride with someone. So I said sure, I'll sit in front, it'll be ok. So we go sledding, and there's this big ol pine tree, right? So, I pull on the rope and it doesn't work, I look, we're close to this tree, I just brace for impact at this point. Well, we hit it, and I mean, we hit it solid. I'm face-planting, my hand gets cut up a bit, we're bouncing back 2 feet, the tree makes an ominous cracking sound, you know. And it knocks out 2 of my teeth. There's blood everywhere, I'm crying, you know, whatever. And while I'm telling this at a family gathering, my little sister nervously reaches over, her sweet brown eyes all concerned and utterly terrified, and she asks me, "did you die?" ... I just look at her and I go, "yes."

I have done same multiple times, and you won't drop trough ice with that, in most cases, you need to keep hammering to break ice enough to create crack in multiple directions so it finally is weak enough to let you drop trough. Of course this all depends thickness of ice. Ice behaves really interestingly when it breaks, often you get one foot trough and realize that it would be good idea to return land, but at places where there is water currents you can drop trough suddenly movie style. That is also how ice drowning incidents happen at winter. Also sometimes thick ice (6+ cm) is under tension and will create loud and big crack that doesn't compromise integrity, in similar manner as tectonic plates move. You can create such crack like this guy in video did.
