Mars helicopter Ingenuity has made its final flight, suffered rotor blade damage

It was already incredible enough that it was the first thing mankind has made that flew above the surface of Mars. But what was also remarkable was the fact that it managed to fly so many times.

When we actually go to Mars, we should retrieve Ingenuity and put it in a special museum to honour it and it's achievements, especially the team that built it. Rest in peace little guy!

Better yet repair it and put it back in flight, why waste technology when it's already there , update it and continue on , I've been studying mars since I first saw THE FACE OF MARS , BACK IN 1978 , i saw it in a book read about it , but why haven't we gone to to investigate those buildings I'm 64 now still keeping up wit our MISSIONS TO MARS and VOYAGER 1 / VOYAGER 2 BOTH OVER A BILLION MILES IN DEEP SPACE AND STILL IN CONTACT WITH EARTH , STRUGGLING BUT STILL ALIVE ...MARS WAS AT ONE TIME HABITABLE IT LOST ITS ATMOSPHERE , MARS ATMOSPHERE CAN ALSO BE RESTARTED, TO START ,BUILD UNDERGROUNG GREEN HOUSES HOUSES WITH TINTED PLASTI GLASS FOR ROOFS TO PROTECT FROM UV RAYS , LET A % OF OXYGEN ESCAPE , BUILD ON HIGH GROUND ANOVE FLOOD PLAINS. @@briannewcombe1045 Stuck "on" the helicopter? lol Obviously they wouldn't get THAT close. But as it turns out, Ingenuity is in the middle of sand ripples, which is a death trap for rovers. So there's no chance Perseverance would drive over there.

Ingenuity exceeded it's lifespan by a huge amouunt of time and 72 flights. This information and experience will open up many doors for future powered flight on other planets and/or moons (Titan for one), and even in remote areas on Earth.

I wonder if Ingenuity could still do little hops, maybe a foot or so high and work it's way to a vantage point on a hill where it would set down and wait for that eventual day when it will be collected by a recovery crew (human or otherwise). Then be placed in a Martian museum for exceptional droid emissaries, including MER- Spirit. Regardless, tonight I shall raise a silent toast to it and tell it "Well done, little one. Well done."

Back in the 60s my dad did electrical wiring at the Johnson Space Center during his vacation from Dow. Part of his paycheck paid for my first year of college. Before NASA recalled the prototypes of the Mercury capsules, I used to play in one that had been rejected from T.J. Bettis company of Oyster Creek. And back when those Mercury capsules used to pass overhead, I would listen to them talk to the folks in Clear Lake on an AM radio I had "under" tuned. So exciting these days with the internet. We can keep up almost real time. NASA should do more to advertise their projects. And get yourself a UKposts channel . . . America is hungry to love you like we did in the Sixties 💕

It's not dead. They will not fly it with the damaged rotor, but the communications, cameras, sensors, etc., are all still functional, and the batteries will recharge without the drain of powered flight... So it has become a little outpost station on the surface.

I guess there's vibration when the rotor spins. Maybe we can include a mechanism to partially retract the opposite rotor blade to achieve balance ... next time. It's been a brilliant engineering achievement.

If a Boing can fly without a door plug, Ingenuity can still fly with a few scratches and dents. A damaged blade will vibrate, but it will still fly. If the opposite side blade was also damaged, it may offset the vibration. It's not Earth gravity, its Mars. Something tells me that they will give it another try after a few strategy meetings.

So, one of the blades touched the ground. Is it confirmed? These blades rotated at very high speeds, perhaps dust particles or grains of Martian sand could also degrade those blades and damage them. It's seen quite often at wind turbines at earth that they get damaged over time, and they almost don't even rotate compared to Ingenuity.

Even if its rotor is broken, it should try to fly again. Even if it's a death flight... If you want to keep it intact for a future museum, I would respect that too.

Maybe send Perseverance over to chip the other blade to make them weight balanced. Not sure if that is possible but just trying to imagine a solution. Maybe the 2 chipped blades would weight balance but not have enough lift.
