While the martial arts genre probably makes you think of elaborate fight scenes and yeah, there are a lot of those, it's also known for gritty crime dramas, fantasy yarns, slapstick comedies, and everything in between.
Unfortunately, all that variety comes with a downside: Where do you start? Do you fire up a brutal modern-day action flick? Maybe a biopic about the legends who helped make the genre possible? Or do you begin with the '60s and '70s exploitation flicks that made "kung fu" a household word and turned over-the-top sound effects into an art form?
Yeah, it's a tough call. While seasoned fans of martial arts cinema have probably seen most of these movies before, the following hidden gems are great places to kick off your journey into the genre.
If you're interested in modern martial arts movies, you should become very familiar with actor Iko Uwais. 2011's The Raid: Redemption made Uwais one of the biggest names in martial arts cinema, and he's never looked back. For Headshot, his duties were bigger than just starring in the movie. In addition to playing the film's lead, he was its fight choreographer, too, and spent three weeks making sure all of Headshot's action scenes were as brutal, bloody, and beautiful as possible. To do so, Uwais gave each character their own unique fighting style, based on the actor's own background. As a result, every action scene is a blend of different martial arts.
As far as plot goes, Headshot tells the story of an amnesiac who's forced to rescue the doctor who nursed him back to life when the gang who raised him comes back for revenge. But really, the story is secondary. You're here to watch Uwais and his co-stars do seemingly impossible stunts and kick some butt. On those fronts, Headshot more than delivers.

What makes Kungfu Hustle so great is the way Stephen takes advantage of using the humour and crazy cartoonish moments to make the emotional parts hit hard. Without this, those 'heartfelt scenes' would seem so corny. That's a difficult line to walk, and he does it so perfectly, in both this movie and Shaolin Soccer.

There is no best but they are both great. I loved headshot and the raid. As far as keanu goes my favorite movie from him was man of tai chi. I know hes not the protagonist. Tiger chen is. All these actors are great. Mark zaror and scott Adkins are becoming more well known. The general public is noobs when it comes to martial arts movies. They dont recognize someone unless the movie is popular. Real fans of the genre know all these movies and actors though. Keanu specifically picked marko zaror I think cause he knows hes under rated. He was great in redeemer. There are too many great movie martial artist like Michael Jai white for me to just say 1 is best. These are just a few of the ones I like alot.

When it was shown in the Philippines they had a hard time pronouncing his name and was thinking of a name and because of its fast popularity they had the thought of him like a big engine. Yes Kung Fu Hustle is a masterpiece. If you liked it you will love Sword Master... although it seems to have been removed from Netflix :(

@@the_invincible8494 maybe.. I did some recommendation around n Most of today's generation have'nt heard about this movie. But back in my days, it was so popular at my home town. Me and my friends used to watch it at cinema a couple of times. I remember all of us having a big crush at the main actress. Ahh Good times.

@ 4:18 -- the film's 3rd surprise is former UFC light heavyweight champ Brandon Vera, who at one time was touted to become both UFC light heavyweight and UFC heavyweight champ of the world! That was the time of another Filipino hit 'Bebo Bebo' by Black Eyed Peas :-)

All other movies can take a back seat to Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, a true classic. And on a not so serious note, one should also watch the film Kung Pow Enter the Fist

Furie , Dragon Tiger gate , Detective Dee , 36 chambers , 5 venoms , the Grand master , IP man movies , kung fu hustle , ALL ARE INCREDIBLE what's not to like. The only problem is Netflix needs to change them more often because there are tons more just as good. Like , kung fu killer , Shaolin , Five fingers of death , Kung fu of the 8 drunkards , snake in a monkey's shadow and many more.
