John Mugabi commented in an interview a few years back that Hagler had the toughest chin. In the 6th round he hit Hagler with a clean upper cut and Mugabi said "My power would have woken up ancestors of other fighters I fought when i connected with the uppercut, but he barely wobbled after the puch!." RIP to the toughest SOB on the planet.. Marvelous Marvin Hagler!

Stop. More false back in my day jargon. There were a lot of good fights made back in the day and there were a lot of guys ducking fights back then. Same thing happens in today's era. There are many good fights that come together and there are some instances with guys avoiding the fight and a lot of that has to do with networks, sanctioning bodies and promoters. The media was full of shit back then and they are now. Only difference from back then compared to now is the activity that takes place nowadays is highlighted to greater effect due to social media and technology.

Not the heart , lol. The head of a champion. Mugabi was arguably the biggest puncher he ever fought. Like , Ali. You couldn’t knock hagler off his feet. His ability to take a shot was one of his greatest attributes. Mugabi wasn’t used to going past 4 rounds here. I give him credit for lasting this long. Hagler like Ali loved to fight punchers. Both had trouble more with boxers as they older. Leonard slicking him. In a controversial decision. Mugabi came out firing. I salute him and the great Hagler. Mugabi was never the same
@bobbywise2313
@bobbywise2313 3 роки тому
@@mrmagoo491 Hearns had one punch that was harder. The Hearns right was lights out for most opponents. But everything Mugabi threw was hard. He had vicious uppercuts, hooks and rights that came from strange angles. He got Hagler's attention a couple of times but never really hurt him Hearns may be the only person to somewhat hurt Hagler. He was fighting off the ropes in the first round and landed a clean hard right that snapped Hagler's head back. Hagler very briefly held on to Tommie after that punch. It was very brief and Marvin was back on the attack afterwards. That may have been the puch that broke Hearn's hand. I am not sure because he hit Hagler with several good rights in round one, but only once did Hagler appear hurt. I was a senior in HS when the Hagler/Hearns fight happened. I picked Hagler and some of my friends felt Tommie would win. For me it was 2 things. Hearns did not have a great chin and he was coming up in weight to fight an all time great middleweight. I knew Hagler could take Tommie's punches but not the other way around. Tommie's legs looked bad after round one. His trainer blamed that on massage Tommie got that day. Maybe that was a factor and so was the broken hand, but Hagler would have won by knock out either way.

Mugabi was at his peak here...strong and powerful. From behind, he looked like a middleweight Sonny Liston with slabs of muscle on his back and shoulders yet, Marvin took all of his heavy shots, walked John down and beat him into exhausted submission. A great showing of toughness and determination by the Marvelous one. Unfortunately in his next fight, Sugar Ray got in his head and Marvin got horrible advice from the Petronellis leading to that loss. He conceded to a 12 round fight and a huge ring to Leonard just to get him to make the fight. Then inexplicably, he tried to show everyone he was a better boxer than Ray and he gave away the first 4 rounds. His corner should have known the crowd and judges would be increasingly behind Sugar Ray the longer he stayed in there. Ray won the fight just by taking it 12 rounds and Hagler and the Petronellis thought the fight would be judged fairly on aggression and hard, effective punching. So stupid. Marvin was NEVER going to win a decision...never! His instructions should have been to go after Ray like he went after Hearns...relentlessly and with no mercy. Even though I think Marvin should have been awarded a narrow, unanimous decision, I have no sympathy for his belief the fight would be judged on equal terms. Stupid strategy and not the first time Marvin out thought himself. He did the same thing in the fights with Duran and Antuofermo 1.

I think what that proves is in training camp, Hagler and his trainers were very conscious of what is more than likely default responses by Mugabe, proving he was more one dimensional as a thinking fighter, rather than a intelligent one...because if anything, Mugabe had a lot of angles....as the fight doctor Pacheco said, you got to be careful of that punch he can land while falling down ....in other words, he's dangerous until down on the canvas and not on the way down. Hagler is not a mystic, he ducked that punch before it happened. I've watched this fight more than any other fight. Its my favorite fight. Only one I have on VHS taped decades ago. Too bad it's not the full fight event, where Mugabe comes out and into the ring....a very dangerous and ominous fighter and rightfully so... ...then here comes HAGLER to the ring....that shadow boxing jog, jacket hoody covering his eyes and half his face....all business, perpetual workman motion... This was a questionable fight at the time....but Hagler had Mugabe PROBED the whole way.

This fight for me was the fight that made my mind up on how good Hagler was. I followed John’s career and he really was a beast of a puncher and an incredible skilful boxer, very underrated in that department by the boxing press at the time. I was actually worried for Hagler. However Hagler showed incredible skill, patience and ring craft. Hagler could mix it up when he wanted to or he could box. What an incredible counter puncher. That uppercut John threw in the 4th would have floored any other opponent but Hagler just shrugged it off. I was shocked Hagler took this fight-Mugabi was regarded at the time as way too dangerous an opponent. Nowadays all the top fighters would duck him in pursuit of someone else with a belt from some other weight class or dubious alphabet organization. Not back then. Hagler took on all of the best: Hearns, Leonard, Duran, Wilfred Benitez too I believe, people know about these guys, but Mugabi was every bit as dangerous as the household names. Hagler was the best.
@kineahora8736
@kineahora8736 2 роки тому
@M Williamson I doubt he (Mugabi) had 100% KO percentage, I seem to recall he had 1 or 2 lackluster fights because the opponents weren’t a big challenge to him, and he wasn’t up for it, but he knew the Hagler fight was his big shot and he came in totally tuned up and in fantastic shape. I was worried Mugabi might beat Hagler-he had a very formidable reputation and record. [edit] …and I just looked it up and you are correct Mr Williamson! Mugabi was 100% KO or TKO except for one retired on cuts. Good memory my man!

Both Fighters were never the same after this Fight! John Mugabi lost within 2 minutes by getting KO'd in the following Fight. Can U imagine what Mugabi must have thought went he hit Hagler with the thunderous Upper Cut in the 4th, & it didn't even phase Marvin Hagler?! Both Fighters pissed pure blood for 12 days following this Fight, Hagler too. In this Fighter, it was to be Hagler's 13the Title Defense. In Hagler's Defense, he'd been Boxing now for over 17 yrs of his Life, & the Champ for 5 yrs now. He was tired, his body was now slowing way down, & it came after the Fight with "The Motor City Cobra" Hearns. Both fights were brutal for Hagler. Then comes the Pussy Ass Sugar Ray Leonard & challenged him to a Fight knowing full well what Hagler had been through, as a commentator in most of Hagler's FIghts. When they fought, Hagler was way past his Fighting days, but he still beat Leonard on points. Hagler NEVER lost any Fight & was ripped off twice by Las Vegas, & that's why he simply just walked away. Marvelous Marvin Hagler will go down in History as the greatest Middleweight Champion of all TIME! & I tend to agree! Fuck, Mugabi hit him with everything & the Kitchen Sink, & it never raddled the Marvelous One . Hagler was the ultimate & CONSUMMATE professional boxing champion, & that's why he's now in the HOF....

I worked for the Boston Globe Newspaper. I used to go down to the sports department and get him glossy original pictures of his fights. I was there when Don King came snd offered him a 100 grand to sign with him. Marvin refused and had to wait 27 more fights for a title shot. And he had no miney. His wife Bertha came in screaming st him over 20 dollars 2 dats earlier.he had integrity, and class. He told me he wanted to come up like Marciano and get a shot at title in his own. The piwers in Bixing shut him out. Took a letter from Ted Kennedy threatening a congressional hearing on boxing to get Arum to give him a shot. We stayed friends fir yrs. Have many pictures of him in gym together. And after he became champ. I myself learned slot, became a golden gloves champ. My name is Don O'Neill. My Dad went on to become a I.B.F. world yitlr judge. A great fighter in more ways than one. He should be proud of what he achieved. An amazing boxer.

Never the same after losing this fight. Put doubt in his mind. Still a class act.

To be fair to Khan, if he was around in the 80s and you paid him enough money, he would get in the ring with hagler. He doesn't duck, he just goes after big pay days!

He hasn't had a very good chin, for sure, but not a quitter, a fast and skilful boxer, and credit for fighting Canelo.
