Arguably the greatest lightweight of all time giving arguably the greatest middleweight of all time a legitimately tough fight. Duran was something else man.
@thejamnasium6447
@thejamnasium6447 Рік тому
this is always my argument for him being the greatest of the Four Kings. granted, anyone who picks the other three isn't really "wrong", because they were all absolutely exceptional. but I think the fact that Duran was ALREADY (arguably) the greatest lightweight of all time and was able to be competitive with the greatest middleweights of all time is truly remarkable. he was like a proto-Pacquiao
@MajikBoxx
@MajikBoxx Рік тому
@@thejamnasium6447 Interesting but IMO 'Sugar' Ray Leonard was the greatest of the four (head-to-head) as he held victories over the other 3 plus a win over notable omission and honorary 5th 'King': Wilfredo Benitez. Interestingly, when Benitez was still WBC junior middle champ and had just beaten Roberto Duran in January '82, he said he was struggling to make 154 and called out the 'Marvelous One' for a middleweight title fight for later that year. Despite Marvin publicly saying he also wanted it and the world wanting to see it, Hagler inexplicably chose, instead, to fight Caveman Lee and then Fulgencio Obelmejias again (whom he had already KO'd before and did so again). After a layoff waiting for Hagler, Benitez fought Hearns at 154 and lost his title on points but if that Hagler fight had been made, perhaps Wilfredo would have also fought all of that Fab 4, not 3.

@@MajikBoxx Nah it's Duran. He's the undisputed fighter of the decade (70's) as a lightweight but was good enough to hang with the best guys in the 80's who were 2 divisions above him. He basically has 2 HOF careers rolled into one. The untouchable and greatest lightweight Duran and the Fab 4 era Duran. He's the only one who beat Leonard in his prime. Even just the fact that he fought from 1967 to 2001 is already a HOF achievement in and of itself. That's a career that started before the moon landing all the way to 9/11 and he still looks mentally sharp today.

Duran fought a fire breathing dragon, looked him in the eye, and didn't blink. He might have lost a unanimous decision, but even in defeat he also further solidified his status as one of the GOAT's of boxing. The number of accomplishments from Duran is insane. Hagler, Duran, Leonard, and Hearns were all superhuman killing machines in the ring. Hagler had built in headgear like an armored tank, and could fight from either stance. Duran had steel in his fists, along with excellent head movement, and all of the tricks of the trade when it came to fighting on the inside both offensively, and defensively. Leonard had golden legs and feet, great movement, and lightning quick hands. Hearns was a physical freak of nature with long legs, long arms, a dynamite right hand, and the prettiest jab I have ever seen. Benitez was a defensive genius with an extremely well rounded skillset. All of them had the heart, and will of 5 fighters put together, and they all could do everything in the ring, but they all had different styles, and different strengths. I don't think any of them had any real weaknesses in their game. The differences in their styles, and approaches made these matchups so great to watch. I can't take my eyes of the dude in the audience who literally had a pearly white smile on his face for the entire fight. I also see Hearns in the audience looking like he wants to step into that ring and participate in the fight.

Also saw Dick Ecklund & his brother Micky , from the "Fighter movie"!? It was also the place where Rocky Marciano got his start? I had a good friend, Matty Ross, who got his start there, He ended up the light heavy weight champ of N.E., became Marvin's sparring partner, toured the world with Hagler! He never had to buy a beer, back home in Billerica, Ma.? Matty also boxed 4 rounds with Ali, in Boston? Every man in Billerica went? Ali was between belts at the time? Also saw Ecklund box Sugar Ray, they also had a few words in the Fighter movie about Leonard going down, I saw it, the crowd ROARED! OH the Memories?

No water cuts or malnourishment to make weight, just incredible fitness. Duran moving up to fight the bigger guys wasn't a wild decision. Great point. People love to point to this as an example of how Hagler couldn't be great if a lightweight gave him trouble. Well, Hagler had a mediocre night; Duran had the chin, slickness, power, diverse skills, and balls to fight well as a middleweight; their stances and rhythms lent to them crashing and getting tangled... AND, although Duran fought a great fight, it wasn't really close. Duran did good work and made Hagler uncomfortable with a few approaches, but this is ATG boxing with ATG great boxers. Of course Duran did good stuff. Hagler still finessed Duran most of the time on the inside, bruised and battered him, but didn't blow him out of the water. Hagler was an ATG middle, number 2 or 3. And he had a few cerebral, performances which didn't have a lot of highlight reel moments. Big deal. If you know the fine points of the sport, this is STILL a pleasure to watch.

@@mortcola I think duran was in his 4th weight class. With age his body matured. Leonard was 6 years at least younger. He tried to brawl with duran but didnt get he was losing his strengh of speed as the fight went on. He was a pussy who retired cause a detached retina. 4 years later he filled out. Had no wear on his body. While duran. Hearns fought. Haglar had to drop weight. Had only 3 or 4 guys to fight. At that time Micheal Spinks fought at cruiser. 178 ? Haglar 165 or 168? Those two should have fought at a non sanction fight. That woyld have been the best fight of 80s. Haglar got robbed by the guy who faked a carerr ending injury. At least Ray Mancini fought Arguello for 15 rounds. Got caught with a left hook in 14th. Alexis was old and clever. Macinci was just caught flatfooted. Was not hurt but it sealed the fight. Mancinis reaction was classic. He just slammed both gloves into mat. He knew he made a mistake and it cost him. At end Arguello was a pure sportsman. Gave the 22 23 mancini respect. Rays bout against Kim was tragic. It took his life in a different look.

Duran was truly amazing. As much recognition as he gets, he may still not get what he is due. He performed so well against larger elite fighters, the fact that he was giving up 8 inches in reach and several in height to guys like Leonard, Hagler, and most of the others is sometimes overlooked. Against Hearns he just had to give up too much, and maybe he got a bit careless due to the fact that Hagler couldn't hurt him. He had also just fought Pipino Cuevas, Davey Moore and Marvin Hagler, in succession before Thomas Hearns. What fighter would do that today? It's been said that Duran is the only fighter that could compete with Ali for the title, "The Greatest." I agree with that. "The Four Kings" elevated each other to levels that we may never see again, but with Duran's lightweight history he may have been elevated the most.

His peak was his fight with Hearns where he put it all together. Sorry I don't mean to sound rude. He even said so himself how he put it all together in that fight with Hearns. Then it was all downhill after that. First he lost his speed against Mugabi then Leonard took advantage of that, or Leonard tried to and lost! (Hagler won imo) Then he retired. Peak, means all coming together at once rather than one thing being better. His peak and peak performance was against Hearns. As was Hearns peak against Hagler. Neither fighter was the same again, it took a lot out of them. However, if you're talking peak in terms of agility, speed, reflexes, timing, movement, athleticism, it's more like 82/83. There's a reason why fighters like Hearns and Leonard didn't want to fight him at that time and waited until 85 and 87. Hearns signed up to fight him in 82 and then thought better of it. Leonard talked about it in and 81 and 82 and also backed away from it.
@nicklasandersson690
@nicklasandersson690 Рік тому
There also a reason why theres weightclasses,and Leonard and Hearns were 147 pounders,not to mention the smallest and oldest if them all,Duran. If thoose small guys wanted to build up some before facing Hagler that isnt strange at all,Marvin was always well conditioned,why didnt he face them at 154 if he wanted them do bad? No because Marvin wanted to sit at hes prime and ideal weight waiting for 3 small guys to come up to him and give him moneyfights,all advantages was for Marvin because these 3 wasnt even 154 pounders like all others that challanged Hagler,they were even SMALLER.

This is a fight you need to watch at least twice, once to appreciate what Hagler does & once to appreciate all that Duran is doing. For the Spice Boys of *Generation Snowflake* who talk about fighters downloading data & playing 3d chess, this fight is an all time classic. If you never seen Hagler before & just heard about his Hearns fight you will be left thinking, "this cant be the same guy". Thats because typically Hagler is a very patient, very skilled very tactical *DEMOLITION EXPERT* , he takes a fighter apart piece by piece. When the going gets tough he *GOES TO WAR* but unless you can put it on him like Mugabi & Hearns did, then he feeds you up with a big, hard to digest serving of *SWEET SCIENCE* until you can take no more. In that respect, you could argue that this is his career defining performance, this is the best version of Hagler we seen, because of all he had to do, all he had to try, just to stay in control of the fight, which brings me back to Duran. Excellent performance by him too, maybe not quite the demonic evil genius Duran that we seen vs Polomino, Ray Leonard 1 & Davy Moore, & not quite the crafty veteran Duran we seen vs Barkley but still an excellent example of how great he was, because of who he was in there with, which brings me back to Hagler. Time & again Ive said it, Hagler is the most complete boxer of the modern era. He has it all, Lefty, Righty, Attack & Defense & he has everything in between too, great athlete, fearless courage, huge heart & will to win & he can put it all together in a single round at the World Championship level vs (at that time) a 3 division World Champ & P4P legend, *DURAN* Hagler had to repeatedly dig deep into his big box of tricks & tactics in this one, trying to shake something loose on Duran whos hands of stone & crafty counter punching & excellent timing were keeping Hagler respectful for all 15 rounds. This is a GREAT fight boys, if you love boxing & kno what yer looking at, its a 15 rdr between 2 all time greats, its up there with any great 15 rounder that went before them. Hagler, watch his sublimely smooth stance switches while on the outside keeping Duran off balance mentally & physically but more importantly watch as he enters the danger-zone, hes going in attacking in one stance n exiting in another, looking to land something sneaky. Its BEAUTIFUL boxing. Check out how at times he leads with his cross, check out his lead hooks to the body & to the head on his entries along with his famous jumping jab, Im sure a young Roy Jones Jr did. Look at his combinations on the inside, how he doesn't over throw his big punches so as not to sacrifice his balance, look how he varies his attack & how he varies the power of his punches to set up his big punch. Look at how sometimes he used the ring like a boxer/puncher looking to jab n move then how he applies the pressure like a Mexican Pressure Fighter. In some of these rounds you are looking at 4-6 different fighters when you are looking at Hagler, the man was near impossible to prepare for coz you never knew how he was gonna attack you or how he would be likely to defend & counter against you. Its just a fact of life, whoever stepped into a ring vs Hagler was automatically second guessing themselves from the very first second of the opening round to the very last second of the final round. anyone who fought him, especially when he was Champion had to be firstly & foremost *TOUGH* which is why only Leonard & Duran managed to go the distance with him & nobody who fought him went on to better things, only Hearns, Duran & Leonard managed to have a career after fighting him, he absolutely *DESTROYED* everyone else, he took their fighting spirits, chewed em up n spat em out. He was a *NIGHTMARE* Hagler had it all boys. If Wilfred Benitez was "The Bible of Boxing" during the same era then Hagler was "The Encyclopedia of Boxing" RIP Marvin #Marvelous

Duran is a natural lightweight coming up to fight the sturdiest middleweight in boxing history. No one had a chin like Hagler. He had naturally occurring headgear and could take the hardest shots tommy hearns could throw and keep coming at him. Duran was older and substantially smaller than Hagler. To make a fair comparison, this would be like Hagler in his 30s going up to heavyweight to fight mike Tyson in his 20s. The fact that Duran stuck it out all 15 rounds through this fight is just incredible. He earned my respect and admiration.

He was not a natural lightweight for this fight, he hadn't made 135 lb for nearly six years before this fight, his fights between when he last did for the third De Jesus fight in early 1978 through to this in late 1983 were at welterweight and light middleweight.. He and Hagler both weighed in at 157 lb for this fight. Do you seriously think if Duran had stayed a natural lightweight he would have walked away from his undisputed world title at that weight? He couldn't make 135 lb, that was the problem and why he started fighting in the bigger divisions. If anything between fights he would balloon out to light heavyweight/cruiserweight. Hagler won but kudos to Roberto Duran for being able to take those hits from Hagler and holding his own when he's four divisions away from the natural MW class of Hagler, as well as considering the fact that Hagler stopped his previous 8 opponents and his next 4 after this fight.

Wow, according to the records Duran and Hagler both weighed in at 157 lb for this fight? But according to some people, Duran was still a 135 lb fighter even though he hadn't made lightweight for nearly six years before this fight and had absolutely no chance of making lightweight.

Hagler could have been a little more gracious but that was not his style. He always made excuses for things and rarely gave his opponents any credit. Duran was 3 years older and about 2 weight classes smaller so give him some credit. I scored the fight 9-5-2 for Hagler with no 10-8 rounds. Both men could be proud of their performance.

a jab is so much more than a punch to land with pin point precision. it's a range finder, and a lot of times just used simply to interrupt your opponent's timing. not necessarily to inflict damage or even land cleanly.

by the way Duran started breathing heavily around the 4th or 5th round I'd say it's a pretty safe bet he wasn't as prepared for this fight as he had people believe. now the Duran that beat Leonard at the Brawl In Montreal, THAT Duran would have given Marvelous a serious run for his money. but it also shows the greatness of Duran. a natural lightweight being in mediocre shape and still lasting 15 rounds with arguably the greatest middleweight of all time.
@paoloalcantara2465

IMO, I’d be hard-pressed to find anyone at 147, past or present, who would be able to beat Montreal Duran. I’d say Pacquiao, Spence, and Crawford won’t defeat him.
@kawaiiafangirl
@kawaiiafangirl Рік тому
Duran beat Leonard in Montreal fair and square but it was really Leonard's decision to stand toe-to-toe and trade punches w/ Duran that lost him that bout. Leonard said it himself that Duran's constant use of pejorative words during the promotional period angered Leonard so he wanted to beat Duran at his own game to prove a point. It was the wrong choice and I think the Leonard who fights his usual fight would beat Montreal Duran.
@bobbyboy900
@bobbyboy900 Рік тому
@@kawaiiafangirl The two fights of duran and leonard are very interesting. IMO, I honestly believe that if leonard had fought montreal duran the way he did in his second fight, he would lose by a wider margin. In the first fight duran was extremely good at closing distance. Contrary to what many people believed, leonard did try to use his movements in the first fight, but duran could keep up with him. His feints, fast jabs, quick and agile footwork, and as well as cutting off the ring allowed him to match leonard's movements. You could see that duran was able to corner leonard many times in the first fight or catch him as he was circling out. On top of that, when duran did get on the inside, he was able to grapple, wrestle, and use his inside game to keep leonard in place which prevented him from moving freely. Montreal duran was not easy to get away from even with leonard's quick movements. Duran will catch up and he did many times. Leonard's best bet would've been to punch and fight duran to keep him from crowding him. On top of that, leonard needed take a step or two, punch, take another step or two, throw a combination. You can't keep someone who has fast feet, is smart, and can cut off the ring off of you by just using quick movments. He needed to catch duran while he is moving to keep montreal duran off of him. That's obviously a lot more difficult than expected because duran had great headmovement going forward and used his counters very well to close distance. Leonard needed to time and punch duran while also staying off the ropes, that is what would've beaten montreal duran. Leonard did do a couple things better in the second fight which was to taunt duran, use better inside fighting/grappling, and more uppercuts to stop duran's advances, but this was against a duran that was not near the physical levels of montreal duran. On top of that, in the second fight, duran was still able to close distance fairly well until the "no mas" end. I think that the highest chance of leonard beating montreal duran would be to use the new skills in second fight with the same strategy in the first fight. Focused on fighting duran and moving only when you need to will keep leonard off the ropes will allow him to beat duran. but what do I know :)
@kawaiiafangirl

@@bobbyboy900 agree to disagree. Leonard himself said that he tried to beat Duran in his own game bc Duran frequently used homophobic and misogynistic terms against him in the lead-up to the fight. The commentators even talked about how flat-footed Leonard was and that he wasn't dancing like he normally does. Throughout the entire bout, they were questioning why Leonard was fighting Duran's fight. Yes, Duran is better at slipping punches than people think. Yes, he had a good counter right. Yes, he made frequent use of his feints. But it doesn't change the fact that Leonard didn't use a lot of lateral movement and go in-and-out like he was expected to. Duran looked great at cutting off the ring only bc Leonard wasn't trying to move like he normally does. If Leonard doesn't move, then Duran gets close and looks even better because of his inside fighting which again, is his game. Duran had been said to balloon up to 175 lbs. after a fight for a couple of years even before the Brawl in Montreal so Duran's commitment was already questionable. If you watch Duran against Edwin Viruet, Viruet had some success against Duran bc he mostly boxed, stayed outside, and kept circling Duran. Viruet however, didn't have the length, speed, power, reflexes, natural size, and most likely, footwork of Leonard.
