Interesting to see you chaps supplementing your other channel in something I can understand! I hope it goes well, and thanks for the closer peek at the Megger gear. I missed Elex this year so didn't get to see it in person.

Yeah, since the interview was already in English, I thought - let's show it to the international audience. And in the same time let's test the waters and see if the viewers can go through a few minutes of my accent without UKposts breaking into riots. So far so good, no calls for immediate deportation, which I'll take as a good omen. :D

Hi David...What are your thoughts on the speed of the insulation resistance test with this model? The ‘start delay’ on MFT X-1 has been extended slightly to enhance safety compared to MFT1741+ (both conform to IEC61010). With the 1552 the analogue arc comes in as soon as the test button is depressed

@@asp217 I'm afraid I've no operational experience of the X1 short of twiddling the knob of one! I prefer my old-school instruments for the most part and will reach for my 1552 or Robin KTS1625 in favour of any flash new bling. Even the Metrel MI3125 which is an all-singing-all-dancing thing tends to get used in Nigel's unwashed hands rather than mine!

Agree, I love my 1552..it's a shame you can't use rechargable batteries in it though

Imagine turning up to a customers house with that... Customer "I think my 3yr old has one of those too"... from 250v and 500v to 300v and 600v, not going to happen, what they have done here is created a very expensive solution to a problem that does not exist.. I love megger and love my 1711, that screen will eat batteries... Bet they will start charging for extra features, easy money.. I can understand it makes sense to try a move the technology forward but I just don't see the advantage, I think they will use this a single platform where you buy the base model and then can add extra features for a price which will just be an update via software, this will save them money as its just one model but the price is all about the software...

Not sure the SD card update is a big deal, firmware could easily get updated as part of calibration. Also a lot of "we could", "we might", "it might be". Also surely anyone buying a new tester is going to want something that can test AFDD's.

You might be able to update the software but can the probe sockets be swapped out when they wear, it’s the first thing that goes, it’s cheap and easy replaceable components that are required to keep these running, the old ones are a nightmare for parts.

Yes they appear to be £1700 ish. Not cheap but looks great and can’t argue with merger quality

It would have to be made of gold to be worth £1700 lol. It's a plastic box with a circuit board, some firmware and a colour screen. The full colour screen will impact battery life massively compared to a monochrome LCD. Can see lots of UKposts and Insta Electricians buying these but that's about it.

@@Chris-hy6jy Agreed. That's why they made a big deal about the battery pack! As for quality, Megger lost that reputation a good long while ago; nowadays they are just one more manufacturer chasing a finite market and trying to claim they are offering something new.

Got my X1 today and tried updating to ver4 but it won't go past stage 3. I get a message "Firmware Update Failed 14" "Please reboot the MFT. If the problem persists, please contact Megger" Not a great start and the calibration certificate is dated 2nd August 2023!!!!!

Does it do anything that the current models don’t do? Probably not. Old school megger was the top of the shop. These days I would say not so. I have 1721 as my day to day mft . It’s ok but it’s been back about 3 times to get fixed. The build quality I think is no better than metrel or anyone else’s mft. Their test leads are utter shite as well. I have a plethora of test gear I have collected after 36 years in the trade and have noticed the decline of megger in the last 10 years anyway. I bought a tis mft with a ev adaotor for 1k plus vat last year. It’s a far better tester than the megger equivalent . Different operation but it does a lot more. Especially if you buy the power quality clamp (overpriced though). They did an update and a free calibration as well. I think megger needs to up its game considerably to remain competitive in todays market.
