Introducing the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door 63 S! Mat’s got his hands on this epic all-new performance hybrid, and he’s on hand to not only see if it’s better than its predecessor, but to see whether it’s better than his current long-termer - the BMW M5 CS!
On the face of it, you’d probably think that not much has changed compared to the previous generation… And you’d be right! On the outside, bar a few badge changes and an updated bumper, it largely looks the same. It’s a pretty similar story on the inside too, bar a couple of infotainment and button tweaks here and there. But then again, that’s no bad thing - it’s still a glorious bit of kit!
However, the biggest change is one you can’t see - under the skin! With a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 coupled with a 204hp electric motor, the range-topping AMG GT 4-Door can now put down a whopping 843hp & 1470Nm of torque, making it the most powerful road-worthy AMG ever!!

Going hybrid really just seems like a compromise for this car. Less boot space, more weight, jerky throttle reaction, it all just makes it feel like it wasn't meant to be sold, it's not ready. I'd just go for a regular GT63 S and maybe tune it for more power.

@@henzo7087 maybe a heavily tuned and modded M5 CS, but not stock. Even the almighty M8 Competition isn’t that fast, and it has the same motor. Something like a GT500, SRT Super Stock, or a high-end 911 could do that, but not an M5 CS.

I used to be a car salesman, and a auto logistics guy, and then did time as an insurance adjuster...all while being a car fan. All I can say from my combined experience is that simpler is simply better. I know that big budget cars are often for non-car folk, dolled up glamour wives, etc...but my experience is simply that all the excessive options and tech just end up being wasted money and massively, eye-wateringly expensive to repair ---- ending with a car that even poorer people can't afford when it breaks in 10-15 years. There's going to be a bizarro world of scrap yards filled with $100,000 electro-luxury-barges that no one can bother to fix/replace in the future.

Somehow I just feel the regular V8 is the pick of the bunch. More practical, no way near as heavy and less expensive but, still great looks and performance.

Remember when mat reviewd the GT 4 door and it got 11.9 seconds on quarter mile but afterwards in a drag race it did 11.1 seconds, he did it in the same track and mat did the quter mile in 10.75 so that means it can go faster in a drag race

I got excited about 843hp, finally this V8 has bigger turbos and is more powerful! But no, they've added a battery box to make the car heavier. Like new hybrid WRC cars, drivers are forced to race with ridiculously heavy boxes which can give extra power for about 30 seconds and after that you are just carrying extra weight. This is Einstein science in 2022.

@@hassanger8128 You're totally right! It's useless to increase the power and adding weight at the same time. I would rather have a lighter car with less power for instance the M5CS. With a lower weight you will have a way better handling and less fuel consumption.

In China VW sold 24% less cars in March, Audi fell 49%, BMW fell 43.6, Mercedes fell 20.7 In Europe March, Audi and BMW fell around -20% along with market contracting. Dacia and Tesla gained.

Shoutout to Matt for always being honest. This proves how difficult a job the engineers for the new NSX had. To produce a car with essentially the same drivetrain layout (reversed), less than $200k, that’s smooth and actually works with technology from 10 years ago. Put some respect on the new NSX name…

kayaking northeast lol 80 was a exaggeration, we full tanked it in Birmingham, foot down all the way around 3am on the m40. Got home to London and reserve light was back on. About a 110/120 mile journey

I've seen few reviews on this beast , by far you're the best Mat 👍. An AMG fan but with the extra 200 kg or so I don't see a significant improvment on performance over the non hybrid 63. It'll be more or less similar to the M5 CS. CS M5 is still the daddy of 4 door super cars .

So with all the complexity and future higher repair costs (due to the hybrid engine), you only gain 0.3sec. of performance over the 63 S. Not worth it IMO.

Great thorough review on the GT 63 S Mat. Id also prefer the M5 CS however The issue with the MS CS isnt the car its the availability....impossible to get and people bought only to sell grey market asking for far more than this merc.

You cant really say the hybrid is any faster Mat, the standard car and M5 are within 10th’s of the hybrid, and not even tested on the same track, thats margin of error stuff so they are essentially identical

Stock BMW M5cs have done 0-60 in 2.6 and the 1/4 mile in 10.6... The times for this particular GT63 S E Performance are very disappointing for a car with awd, 843 hp and 1000+ lbs of torque. It's not much faster than the standard GT 63s. I'm sure further test will come in much faster...it has to.

@@seanhodges3562 I think you're forgetting the fact that on that very same channel where the M5 CS did 10.6s 1/4mile, the GT63 S did 10.78s 1/4mile and the GT63 S E Performance would be even quicker when the guys at Autotopnl get their hands on it. Carwow: M5 CS - 10.9s, GT63 S 11.1s, GT63 S E Performance: 10.8s Autotopnl: M5 CS - 10.64s, GT63 S 10.78s

8 miles is not enough for around town. My wife's Cayenne S e-hybrid only does 11 when it gets really cold in the deep of winter (below 0 F), and that is barely enough for many local trips. In summer it can do 17-20, and that's fine. I think 30-40 would be ideal and to the point of diminishing returns.

The CS might have ran similar or a better time if it he had given these conditions. Best 0-60 of the CS is 2.7s if I remember correctly

I've heard tell that ceramic brakes don't work as well when cold. If that's true, you should do brake tests on these cold, and warmed up to see the difference if any. 👍✌

Super fast car, but I agree with you. So much going on between the ICE and the elec motor. I mean, if you can hear all that going on, just think how it will be like in 30K miles. So much going on, what will go wrong when the car is a year old??

Carbon ceramics rarely make no noise. Like I wouldn't expect them to be silent but being not overly grabby is always an issue. I think the ECB with a supplemental electric engine is and will be the pinnacle for some time. Key will be minimizing the weight without sacrificing rigidity so carbon fiber tub hood boot lid. All of these things need to be being invested in by manufacturers . They seem to be missing the mark. So happy to see AMG doing it right. Rimac can make monocock tub so either they need more machines to make more and any company making a car over 125k. Should be going that route. I think the i8 could also make a stellar return if BMW doesn't overlook what Mercedes has done here

@@TheTruth51517 Just stop it. The Merc weighs about 500kg more than the Bimmer and even the GT63 S (639hp) was also heavier than the M5 CS, yet it was marginally quicker with PS4S tyres compared to the M5 CS with P Zero Corsa tyres at the Hockenheim. Now how is that engineering for you?

Nailing their designs? Nailing their customers by the looks of it. The orange peel in the paint is horrific and that brake noise was a delaminating pad which isn't covered under warranty and likely to cost £3k as the discs will be streaked and the pads alone are £700.

I love those wheels sooooo much. It looks like you have a smaller diameter wheel with more rubber but it can still house giant brakes. Best of both worlds.

It's how the size of the wheel look with the thickness of the sidewall and how the brakes fill up the inside of the wheel and how everything fill up the fender. It's all about proportions. I for one do not like the 21-23 inch wheels with tires that look like they're barely there.

Stuff the environment, I would stick with the regular V8 BiTurbo engine. Also I would take this over the BMW M5 CS; looks better and sounds better!! If I have that amounts of money, I would get something that looks cool, performs well, and that balances look and tech!! Great review Matt!!

You should really start including 100-200 KMH measurements as 0-100kmh table is really saturated by now and can vary a lot with the surface.

Rented a couple C63's. One was simple V8 the other had turbo's. Both definitely probably causes for a felony- the cars begged you to misbehave. Loved it. Really like the looks of the newest one but I don't want a car that gets confused when I call for power.
