20+ years ago, I owned a game room / pool hall. When handicapping one brother over another, one suggested using the house broom. Both guys were in their 20's, and responsible enough to take care not to damage the felt, etc. so I allowed them to try it. Over time it became commonplace that players would challenge each other to shoot with the house broom. For the older of the brothers, it was no longer the equalizer, so when it was time to buy a new broom, I intentionally bought one due to its build, it had a slick plastic tip hanger on the end, and it swiveled. What English wasn't lost to the tip being plastic, was totally eliminated by the swivel action. Over time a few games were won using it, but the laughter and fun times it caused were worth the price paid even if it were never used to sweep a floor. Requests to use it got so frequent I justput it in the house cue rack.l with the other cues. Fun memories. Thanks Modern Rogue.

Sin #1: Pick a table adjacent to someone else playing when you can go 1 table over and not be adjacent to anyone. It's entirely unnecessary to pick a table next to someone and risk having to wait before taking a shot. Some times it even ruins the flow and the focus, or has someone rush their shot and miss. It's a scummy move.

Used to work in a pool hall when I was 17-20. I learned by just observing tournaments and observing the old silver foxes playing. If you don't want to look like a total ass all you have to do is 1) be polite. 2) don't be loud. 3) walk over to your sitting/standing area when it's not your turn. That way you won't bother the next table or bother your brother with your movement or sounds when they are taking shots. That's basically it. Most people really don't care how good you are as long as you are polite and don't bother them when taking shots.

The chalk CAN be used just like talcum powder to soak up moisture from your bridge contact points. Baby powder is better but if all you have is just a bit sweat that ends up in wrong spot, you can touch it up with chalk to make it go away temporarily (if it happened once, it probably happens again..). Open bridge is better as there are less sweat glands in the skin, closer bridge gets moist so much faster and it happens during the shot, longer you aim, the stickier it gets as it can't evaporate.. I can remember the day i learned open bridge.. it was the first big leap. The next big leap was learning to use spins which starts the process of thinking one move ahead until you have a plan for the whole round. edit: hustle.. won't work. You won't get enough bets against a stranger and betting isn't that common in the first place. We usually bet on beer, which is another good equalizer ;) Then you can get a free beer by hustling but it is more or less a prank level, not at real hustle. After all, if the other player is even half decent, pool has a lot of random involved. You can get in a tough spot and lose your main game.. Specially if you walk in to a bar with one pool table that hasn't been maintained and the locals know how it curves... hustling just don't happen in real life. Same as cheating in poker, it just doesn't happen. The circles are too small (i lived for a while playing poker with a partner and "hustling" until we were taken down back to zero..i was a new face that gave a little bit of edge and my partner was notorious for not being great, we split the profits)

I once played regularly at a bar with a dedicated pool room (two tables). One table had a fault with the coin operation. The plates holding the coins were opening up to drop them after the balls were dispensed, meaning you could play for free (if you were so minded)... We would turn up as a group, often using both tables solidly for a few hours (obviously dropping to using only one table on the rare occasion somebody else wanted to play), and would generally sneak one free game for every five we paid for between the tables. It wasn't about screwing the bar over for free pool; but when you find an exploit, not ever using it would be a shame.

Checking in before watching: I'm actually pretty pumped about this episode, even moreso than I usually am for MR. My cousin was known as the best bank pool player to ever live...yes I'm serious. Check out Eddie Taylor "The Knoxville Bear". Unfortunately, Eddie passed when I was little, but his skills are still discussed at every reunion. I've got 2 of his signed cues that he used, never letting those get out of the family. :)

Noticed this real fancy pool hall on my way and every time I pass it I think "Hmm, that looks like a cool place. Shame I'll never know how to go inside without looking like an idiot". And then you guys come out with this episode. From now on I will a) wear a tinfoil hat at all times, b) vary my route to work at random, and c) visit the pool hall! Cracking episode guys!

I haven't played pool in probably 15 years. Back then I used to prowl the halls, looking for challenges. I slid from shadow to shadow, dragging my pool cue behind me (it had a little wheel on the end). And then, disaster, a freak check signing accident crippled the nerves in both hands, ending my career just as it was getting started. Seriously, I played 15 years ago, me and some friends in college decided it would be fun, so we played once or twice a week for a couple of semesters (and a summer). I got to be okay... not great, but I had fun. The nerve damage is real (not from signing checks though), but it predates my pool playing days and as far as I know didn't affect my play (or maybe it did, but I never knew). (I also studied the historical Jesus in college, since it was a school that trained pastors... I didn't end up becoming a pastor, though. God directed my path elsewhere.)

This past Christmas I was in a tourist city in my state at a sports bar and in pool table area there was a younger to middle age guy and an older gentleman playing each other using each other to pull people into playing them and when the sucker would challenge one of them ,they would obviously be playing for cash, they would show their true colors by showing how good they were so when the sucker lost he would challenge for a double or nothing and lose again. Just an experience I got to see and this happened to multiple different people within about 2 hours.

Is it a sin to use the cue to line up what angle you want to hit the other ball in to get it into the pocket? I do this a lot and although I don’t go to pool halls I’m just wondering. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about it’s when someone hovers there pool cue above a ball and points it at a pocket)

If open bridge is right, you shouldn't have much friction, even on house cues. When I was younger, I didn't know how to do it, and friction was always a problem. Then, started copying how the pros bridged watching ESPN billiards back in the day, and it was a game-changer; the 'ok' sign was the key, and let the cue rest on thumb knuckle applying little friction from the index finger and using the ring finger as a guide... no glove needed. The fiber-carbon shafts are nice and smooth too.
@juderosenstock7571
@juderosenstock7571 4 Ρ€ΠΎΠΊΠΈ Ρ‚ΠΎΠΌΡƒ
Yeah, carbon fiber shafts are still very new. About a year ago, there were only two companies producing them and I predicted, by 2020, there would be at least a dozen. Turns out, I was right. Unfortunately, they're also very expensive so I'm waiting until the next expo to give them all a test-run. The benefits are, they're non-porous so they're always smooth, unlike wood which retains dirt and moisture which makes the cue sticky. They're also very strong and stiff which creates minimal deflection, they don't dent, and they transfer more power to the cue ball than a standard wood shaft.

"That's infected." Is now the perfect throw off phrase. No one can possibly focus a shot while wondering "WTF is infected? Am I infected? Is there something on the back of my head I haven't seen!?!?!" Fucking holy shit. You can use that on anyone as long as you get close and behind them during a game. Time it to when you think they're gonna shoot. And they're gonna be tilted asf. Straight doing them dirty.
