FILM DESCRIPTION:
During the 1980s recession, automobile engineer Jack (Michael Keaton) is fired from his job. When his wife, Caroline (Teri Garr), finds a job before he does, they switch roles, placing him in the unfamiliar position of homemaker and caretaker to their three children. He embarks upon a series of misadventures, from navigating grocery store trips to playing poker games with housewives. Jack and Caroline must figure out the intricacies of their new roles while maintaining their relationship.

In an interview with David Letterman, Keaton revealed that the "220/221" line was Martin Mull's idea. It wasn't scripted but they rehearsed it a couple times. Then he got a prop guy to find him a chainsaw. Also not scripted. Two brilliant comedy minds.

Unless ur in Germany or 1 of them kind of countries..here n the US switches n receptacles are 120 in residential areas. For example the stove/oven is probably the only 220 outlet he most likely would need.thats why the boss knew he was a bigger bs then himself

@@cgh7337 I've pondered this line for over 40 years. I think Ron knew Jack had no idea what he was talking about so he suggested "220" when typical wiring in a room would be 120 volts. Not only did Jack not know that, he hilariously suggests the nonsensical 221....

Great scene but the best line was right after Jack’s wife & her boss leaves. Jack: “How’d ya like a little trim on that mustache Ron?” (Fires up the chainsaw)

As a child, I didn't understand the 220 line. It wasn't until I was eighteen and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity that I finally figured it out. I was watching the experienced guy, who was helping all the volunteers, talk about wiring a room ... and I finally got it. lol

Criminally Underrated John Hughes movie. Everyone talks Brat Pack and Vacation. For My Money, this movie is just as poignant for adults in financial crisis (as most adults are, on varying scales) as The Breakfast Club was for teens of any age or generation. He was brilliant. RIP

most outlets in living quarters can be low voltage DC. Outlaw most UL listed transformers. Install AC to DC transformer in basement or utility and send out lower current and voltage. UL will adopt new standard for low voltage receptacles for a variety of low voltage fuses(No smaller than 1 amp no larger than 5) Aluminum conductors could replace most branch circuits including those for AC current.

Most small household appliances are 110 but things like washer and dryer are generally 220. Run 220 to the fuse box .. I think

I love this movie, but now that I'm older I have caught some things that make no sense, like the part where he's trying to impress his wife's boss with the "220" line. He's supposed to be an engineer so how in the hell doesn't he know what he's talking about? If ANYONE should know what they're talking about it's an engineer.

Big appliances like ovens, water heaters, dryers, etc run on 220V here in the US. And electric car chargers, but not when this movie was made 😆
