Funnily they're actually never really been eaten at they have very little meat on them (I have one myself so I know) they are mainly only killed for their beautifully soft coats, whereas it was actually Guinea pigs that were eaten. Please know that chinchillas are critically endangered in the wild both species (long and short tailed) Machu is a long tailed chinchilla which is the more common of the two as well as the one most commonly used in the fur industry. So anyways technically not humans but instead it mostly birds which is why they don't like things grabbing them from above.
