To change the controls layout: in control settings of a particular game, through in game steam menu, you may need to manually change the order of controller usage, keeping your selected layout as first and steam deck layout second. Then your selected control layout is kept ss default.

I think for things like this. It’s good to have a habit of uninstalling games when your finished and play around 5 games at a time. Because storing every game you touch and not uninstalling previous games you might not play eats a lot of storage. I notice this habit to uninstall stuff on console but I don’t see it as often on pc players. I rock a 512gb micro sd with a base steamdeck and honestly didn’t need anything. Using steamOS 3.5 also makes shader cache smaller. I’m surprised the sleep function wasn’t mentioned in this as it’s very useful. Battery I feel is kinda depends on how long you game on battery and if 1.5-2 hours is enough for you if your playing demanding titles. For me it’s honestly the right amount of time. If the battery got bigger I feel the chassis would need a weight reduction as some people are already complaining about it’s weight which I don’t see the problem. If a steamdeck 2 came out, I hope there’s a 64gb model and better single thread performance (xemu needs more cpu power for emulating original Xbox) for that cheap price as that’s what got me during a sale in spring (the first sale, didn’t know if that was going to be the last sale for a long time).

Got my SSD in before my deck arrived. I recommend, if you have the budget, to upgrade to a 1-2TB SSD and getting a 512GB SD card for smaller games+emulators. Save the money by buying the 64GB version and voila, you are set.

I've been playin on computers for decades, 8bit generation up until now: the Steam Deck is an important device. It's not the most powerful but it streamlines the gaming experience on a Linux PC like I'd never have imagined it possible. The whole Proton/Wine thing is what technology should be for consumers: pretty much black magic, it's (mostly) just works. When I use my deck ppl ask me "oh! What Console is it?". Not because of the form factor, but how user friendly the experience is. Sure not all games work but honestly, it has an almost infinite amount of games already and the few games that are not running now are because of some debatable anti cheat systems. Cherry on top: slap a 20 buck hub and you have a fully usable linux PC either in desktop or gaming mode. The loading time using micro SD is also super impressive. I'm just missing the native support for the xbox wireless dongle for 4 players sessions of Towerfall/Tricky Towers etc on the go...

@@lima7790 you don't have to worry about that, updates are to improve games etc not fix. you can play anything just fine, you can also download movies etc and watch them on desktop mode. How much different it feels to carry a Steam Deck with you compared to a Nintendo Switch? Everyone says it's more comfortable to hold and emulation is good enough, but I'm worried about how uncomfortable it might be to take it out of the house against a Switch.
@qliqoei
@qliqoei 5 місяців тому
The Deck feels great in the hands! I would attribute this to the molded grips that both sides have. In addition to this, I believe that the weight is also not too heavy, but your mileage may vary. If you've ever felt an Xbox Elite controller, I would say that the Deck has a similar feel to that, not identical, but similar. If you can, I would strongly recommend you try to find a Deck that you could try out to see if you like its weight and feel.

@@qliqoei After watching Retro Game Corps, a good point was made that a good combo is a small handheld like the Miyoo Mini for retro games, and the Steam Deck for anything else that requires more power. I'm tempted to buy a Steam Deck but, as you said, I really want to hold on to one first.

Imo they feel about the same to carry around, as neither are pocketable. So either way I’m going to be carrying around a case, or a backpack. At least that’s my experience. I have a launch day switch and reserved my deck day 1, so I’m pretty comfortable with both. Edit: Also, in case you’re curious, the Deck is about the same size as a Switch with something like the Hori Split Pad Pro. Just mentioning in case that helps you visualize it.

Windows is never gonna happen on the Deck as Valve specifically created it to combat Microsoft's monopoly on PC gaming. Of course you could always install it yourself if you wanted to for some reason. And yes you have to tinker with some games to make them run, have you seen Windows handhelds? The experience is absolutely horrid compared to the Steam Deck and many more games require tinkering compared to SteamOS.

@Playgroundia
@Playgroundia 6 місяців тому
@@joshjacobson8573 While that is a great option, I would not rule out the mid version simply because even if you do put the external 1TB into the Micro SD slot, the updates and shader caches take up a SERIOUS amount of space on your main drive (for me I had the 64GB) which meant that when I installed a "big" game say: Witcher 3 or Just Cause 3, my Deck's Default Space was consumed instantly with the shaders (or whatever it was) even though it was installed on my 1TB card, if that makes sense. I have not tried to dabble in to fix it, because after all, I am just a casual user of the Deck, but if you were someone who spent considerable time with the device, I could see the mid tier version being a seriously considered purchase. Just my opinion.
