Marlin Yoder is currently a shop mechanic for Hendrick Motorsports, and was the front-end mechanic on the No. 5 car in the NASCAR Cup Series when Kyle Larson won the championship in 2021. But it's where Marlin’s story begins that will have you hooked....
From the moment Marlin began speaking, we were hanging on every word. He details his decision to leave his family and the Amish community behind to start a new life, the dramatic day of his departure, and how he navigated the outside world on his journey to reach the pinnacle of stock car racing.

Its religious, many believe the devil will get ahold of their kids and if they keep in constant communication it will allow the devil into their lives. Thats the reason it took them so long to ask what he does or how he was doing. For most of us we believe our closest relationship is with our parents, children, and siblings. But in the Amish community God is your closest relationship. And anything that comes between or distracts you from God is evil.

Honestly it’s an abusive community. They have great intentions in their mind with great work ethics and I know many Amish and grew up around many and I even know plenty with the last name “Yoder”. My little league baseball coach in the z80s was a defector. From all the things I’ve seen and heard it’s not much different than David Koresh and the branch davidians sadly 😔

@@stevenwalker9013That is part of the Amish culture. What inspired me to read up on the ways of the Amish was actually after I'd seen the movie "Witness". Harrison Ford and Kelly Mc Gillis starred. Im have a small trucking business. I do mostly antique, vintage and custom built pieces for several clients. One of which buys hand made furniture constructed of reclaimed barn wood. The makers are an older man and his daughter . They are Mennonites. They are located near Lancaster PA. I've asked them lots of questions about how their culture works as well as the Amish culture.. Learned a lot from them . When the children reach a certain age there is this event known as "Rumpsringa". It's a German term translated to Jump Around. Anyway, this is a rite of passage for teen Amish. It is at this time they get to decide to continue living within the religious teachings and obey the Amish ways. Once they decide to remain , they are committed to the church for life. If they decide to leave the Church, they are free to live in the outside world but are allowed to visit and maintain their relationship with family However, if they commit to the Church and then leave, depending upon how the District Elders interpret their religion, it could be as severe as what is known as "shunning" or be "shunned". Basically the individual is excommunicated.. Their family will ban them from the home and no one in the community can even speak to them..

Wow. Hard to grasp how the faithful Amish live and think in a modern world and continue to stay faithful to the Amish way of life. I live in Pennsylvania in York County. One job I had was a truck shop in York and I went to various truck shops selling and delivering. I had to visit a coupe of Amish truck shops in York and Lancaster counties. One in particular was a family run shop with brothers and dad as the mechanics. In warmer months, their children would run through this large garage in bare feet and they loved playing and getting dirty. The bottom of their feel looked like the floor of the shop. They would climb on things and basically play as they pleased with what seemed like no guidance. The family was friendly towards me and it was kinda fun to visit them and witness them at work in "their world" so to speak. No electricity in the shop, only diesel engines ( no spark) but many drove a van and I don't remember if they installed a diesel or just used gas engines. One shop, the owner admonished me for giving him a business calendar my employer wanted passed out to customers. He said due to the one woman in a picture (legs showing) he could not hang it up in the shop. He said he was an Amish preacher but, he kept the calendar and thanked me. ??? Oh well. In York county, you might pass by a farm and see what looks like an outhouse nest to a telephone pole near the road. It is a phone booth used by the head of the house/farm. Driving is certain parts of Lancaster county with Amish communities, be sure your windshield washer bottle is full of fluid. When it starts to rain, cars in front of you deposit a mixture of water and meadow muffins onto the windshield by the spray coming off their rear tires. Yes, it is from the horses.

Got a couple friends that left the Amish. Their stories are strikingly similar to this young man's story. To leave everything behind and step into the modern world takes a very strong will. To be shunned by friends and family and the community you grew up in is one of the reasons some stay and lead unhappy lives. Thankfully there are folks who will drop everything and show up to pick up these young folks who want to leave and give them support to get them going.

Interesting insight into the Amish community. We live amongst them here in Northern New York and the Amish lifestyle is a bit mysterious to the “English” as we are called. I’m not always a big fan of Junior’s interviews that don’t focus on the more famous members of the nascar community but this was one of his best interviews ever. It’s really interesting to hear about how Marlin went from Amish to a NASCAR mechanic in just a few years.

The Amish life is constructed to keep the community close. They also are hard in the families of those who leave. They have to shunned and tossed out of the church if they stay in contact. Kids coming out lack most things like education or drivers license etc. Also each sect or Church can be different. Some are hard core you get no breaks while others can use cell phones for work etc. I grew up around them and this is a very complex community. They also suffer what we do with drunks, drugs and criminals with in their community. We have had a lot of work done by the Amish in our home. And they love seeing technology. My great uncle had a farm and they would come over to watch tv with him or keep electric guitars at his house. Some kept cars in the woods on his farm to drive. In high school the kids would dress in our cloths once they left home party and then go home in the traditional dress. I ate dinner at an Amish home and it was crazy. It got dark they lit gas lights and boy the food was great. Every kid has to decide to stay or go. Then there is Mennonite. They are like Amish less strict as they have electric and cars but still similar.
