Who is the Ideal Guy of our times, according to modern Rom-Coms? This is Take Two, comparing two sides to a cultural question of our times, brought to you by @thetake . Take 1 will argue that it’s the secretly sensitive cool guy -- who has hidden depths and isn’t the cliche the old tired script has trained us to expect. Take 2 will argue that it’s the secretly awesome dork -- who represents inner beauty and not just seeking the prize everyone else is after.

Hot sensitive guys seem to be an idealized version of men sold to women. On the other hand, the awesome dork is sold to men to make them feel as if they can get any girl. Both got their problems.

Did they really use the Kissing Booth guy as an example of an ideal guy today? He is so TOXIC. Peter embodies the sensitive cool guy, but his lack of flaws other than dealing with his family struggles is unrealistic.

The fact that cool guy Keanu Reeves in real life signed up to play an over exaggerated version of himself shows a humble awareness. Something that could have been added to Take 1's perspective. Also, people cannot help how they look or are built Including the attractive cool guy. Him being perceived as conventionally attractive should not add or take away from him being ideal. Overall both good takes.

I'm on board with BOTH takes. While Peter is a genuinely sweet, wonderful guy, the awkward dork needs more love. ♥️They're BOTH better than the controlling, romanticised Bad Boy (Noah Flynn and Christian Grey, take notes!)

I have to go with Take 1! It often seems like the “awesome dork” is actually looking for a girl to place his fantasies on (manic pixie dream girls/dream girl syndrome). Plus, most of the nerdy characters shown are still relatively attractive. John Ambrose is gorgeous and could also play the sensitive cool guy (like he was the leading man in Work It). I’d like to see this conversation with actual dorks who would be considered unattractive.

I'm Take Neither. My most beautiful experiences have come from seeing someone not as a Type, but as an individual who can embody sensitivity AND strength, and authentic confidence through self-acceptance. But what's most attractive for sure for me is humility - someone who can own their flaws and grow through them. THAT is who I want to see onscreen.

I like both. I feel the ideal guy always depends on the story being told. Take 1 is perfect for To All the Boys I Loved Before but Take 2 is perfect for Always Be My Maybe. In real life it will always depend on the person and who they connect to

@girlpower8900
@girlpower8900 3 роки тому
Both takes have really, really good merits. And there are good and bad examples of both tropes. Noah Flynn for example is really NOT the idealized dream guy you'd want when you think of the sensitive cool guy - but at the same time someone like Peter Kavinsky IS the kind of guy that I would want (sweet, sensitive, cute, and a little bit silly himself at times). At the same time, I could really appreciate a dorkier, more humble guy for myself - someone a little nerdier but gets me on a level that nobody else does. But at the same time, someone like that could easily be kind of pretentious and constantly trying to feel like an underdog, even when they're really not that anymore

I go with Take 1. The Sensitive Jock can be a little bit of a female fantasy, but honestly what is the problem with that? Why is it that only men can have a thousand tropes representing their different tastes for women in media while we need to always settle for an average guy? Also I’m so tired of the “Nice Guy” trope or the situation where the best friend is secretly in love with the girl and when she gets a boyfriend or even just becomes interest in someone they are super mean but in the end they’re rewarded for that.

Agreed, it's a bit of a fantasy but that's what entertainment is about, women should be able to enjoy media that tells them "You deserve a love that gives you all you're looking for in a relationship" instead of constantly being told to settle for people who don't even want to commit

Both serve as a female fantasy the same way women's archetypes served fantasies to men for so many years. I would agree with the "Awesome Dork" though. He is far more realistic than a popular kid who somehow attention didn't get into his head. Both of those types share one similar aspect: "Being comfortable with who you are". In other words Self-esteem and confidence.

I'd choose Peter Kavinsky over any of these guys because he's hot, mature , puts in effort in the relationship and has adorable love languages ( gifts and acts of services). The only problem with LJ and his relationship is LJ! She overthinks a lot, did kinda deceive Peter AND John Ambrose by not telling them the truth and being too insecure even after Peter has shown her multiple times that he loves her with all his heart! ( I like John Ambrose too but Peter got here first ;p)

Bruh Take 1 all the way. The sensitive jock can be a jerk sometimes but they’re usually held accountable for it. Meanwhile, the “awesome dork” will do bad things like sabotage relationships (Pretty in Pink & Tall Girl) or belittle the protagonist (Always be my Maybe) and yet still be rewarded in the end despite not really stepping up to the plate or reflecting on their actions. The awesome dork is the definition of rewarded mediocracy. No thanks!

The word you’re looking for is chivalrous. The ideal man is chivalrous and confident...Well ideally he would have those two traits - as opposed to machismo and arrogance. EDIT: side note Peter is charming, attractive, and confident BUT he is also an irresponsible, indecisive, gaslighting liar and player who is very manipulative throughout the films. Who's behavior is excused because of his charm and looks. This is not new and is a tale as old as time. -- Not saying the Marcus is perfect but he actually learns from his relationship to get over his insecurities and to get out of his bubble. Let's be objective when observing behavior.

Both men are ideal in my opinion. The world is a diverse place. Not all men should have to fit into being some cool sensitive guy or some awesome dork. They just should be themselves while also being decent good people. Both tropes have evolved for the better, though, like all people, they may have their flaws. However, any girl who finds herself with a cool sensitive guy or an awesome dork may have a very good partner. They are both ideal.

The male trope is that a beautiful woman will love an average guy, because she is sensitive. The female trope is that a handsome guy will love an average woman, because he is sensitive (every Jean Arthur movie). Addendum: The issue is one of poor terminology. Love is often used as a synonym for lust. But love is not lust. A handsome guy might love an average looking girl for her personality, but he might have no lust for her physically. So, if she wants to make him her boyfriend, she would be better off working on her appearance than her personality. A beautiful girl might love an average looking guy for his personality, but she might have no lust for him physically. So, if he wants to make her his girlfriend, he would be better off working on his appearance than his personality. Guys and girls make the fatal mistake that they can get someone through love without lust. So, girls get breast implants. Guys do cable crossovers.

I’m sorry but Randall Park wins. Who wouldn’t pick Jimmy Woo. Yeah he’s not on Netflix but in Marvel but.... JIMMY WOOOO!

im slightly leaning towards take 1 since himbos are very much in right now, but i think both sides chose bad examples. i think john ambrose is a better choice than peter (at least in the 2nd movie he is) but the endgame guy from tall girl was absolutely trash. the guy from the kissing booth was terrible but the guy from the half of it was so wholesome and sweet.

I actually really disliked Randal parks character in Always be my maybe, Sasha was driven and hard-working and he kept putting her down for not being "authentic" enough and in the end, he is vindicated for his belittling of her passion by her "returning" to classical food. Like Sasha's character worked hard to get where she was at and him being like "but its not real tapis sucks..." just didn't vibe well with me. I thought they were gonna show that his character was lashing out at her for being more successful than him especially bringing up how "well she wasn't actually your mother" but in the end by naming her restaurant after his mom felt like she was capitulating to him.

It's the guy who isn't on the verge of suicidal depression from the crippling constraints of a capitalistic society. Who manages to also be emotionally available and accepting of his romantic interest also trying to make it in this disillusioned world.

Considering that last night I literally dreamed that Simon from Bridgerton was in love with me, Take 1 all the way. The thing is, I feel that idea has massively been curated to fit women's fantasies (very correctly in my case), and is therefore fairly unrealistic, and that makes me sad...

I am going to go with take one as the awesome dork has been done a lot so it's nice to have a different troupe. I like that it's a stereotype flipped on it's head and gives woman different male lead to root for. It'd be boring if we just stuck with one type forever. Also whilst I do love the awesome dork, I could not stand Marcus in Always be my Maybe, he had so many hang ups and was a bit of a douche at times and I don't think they really addressed that, like sure he likes you but every time you have an argument is he going to react like that. Having said that, that guy from kissing booth is a horrible example and I hope we don't get more of him. He was too controlling and aggressive. *red flag* On a positive the lead in Edge of Seventeen was great, I loved him!

Can I get a mixture of both in the same guy? Is that possible? I always liked the sensitive cool guy but they never liked me back. I can pull the awesome dork which I LOVE(d) but can a girl have her fantasy cake and eat it too?!? I want you to be fine af and have good interests. Can you be my best friend AND make me feel fireworks? Healthy Masculine and an Individual? Thoughtful and Focused? I want All the things.
