Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and Ph.D. in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s, she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input.
During her years in clinical practice and her work with thousands of underprivileged teachers and students in her home country of South Africa and in the USA, she developed her theory (called the Geodesic Information Processing Theory) of how we think, build memory, and learn into tools and processes that have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD), autism, dementia and mental ill-health issues like anxiety and depression. She has helped hundreds of thousands of students and adults learn how to use their minds to detox and grow their brains to succeed in every area of their lives, including school, university, and the workplace.
Dr. Leaf is also the bestselling author of Switch on Your Brain, Think Learn Succeed, Think and Eat Yourself Smart, and many more. works She teaches at academic, medical, and neuroscience conferences, churches, and to various audiences around the world. Dr. Leaf is also involved in the global ECHO movement, which trains physicians worldwide on the mind-brain-body connection, mental health, and how to avoid physician burnout.
Dr. Leaf is currently conducting clinical trials using the 5-step program she developed while in private practice to further demonstrate the effectiveness of mind-directed techniques to help relieve mental ill-health problems such as anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts. The primary aim of these trials is to make mental health care more affordable, applicable, and accessible worldwide, and to reduce the stigma around mental health. It was truly an honor to have her on The School of Greatness podcast!
Join me on Episode 1,079 to learn how to heal your mind and improve mental health based on neuroscience with Dr. Caroline Leaf!

Wow, I am blown away by her message and the work she has done. I used to have bad depression and battled it and went to south america to take ayahuasca and san pedro and it helped tremendously. Around that time I realized that I was not "ill" or "crazy", but that the depression and anxiety were messengers about my life. Once I met likeminded people that were having the same problems, because they didn't seem to fit in, I realized these were just symptoms for underlying problems. That view alone can help so much.

Language is so important. In the English language, we say 'I AM depressed'. The sentence is structured to personally identify as depression. It is who we are. But, in the Irish language, for example, translated they say 'I have a depression ON me'. It separates the person from the depression and makes it a temporary and removable thing/object. It's a good way to explore how we identify and process something.

I had an episode this past year, was hospitalized and I am on 3 different drugs. I know that they have and are altering my brain. I feel horrible everyday, but are hard pressed to find a medical professional that will help me safely withdraw from the neurotoxins that I ingest daily. I feel until I'm free of the drugs neuroscience will not help. I have abruptly stopped in the past and it was disastrous. With the aid of a doctor I tried to withdraw but he withdraw too much too soon, another disaster. I want desperately to get my life back. I hope that someone can see this comment and help. In the meantime, I continue to pray, meditate, and force myself to exercise, and am learning how to eat properly. Thank you Lewis for all you do for us. Continued blessings.

Someone who's had a life long battle with neurological issues from epilepsy, anxiety, to depression. I might have once disagreed with Caroline on her thoughts of depression, but as someone who's went to the brink of it through 5-6 miserable years, she's right. Depression did feel like a "illness." It was something that I couldn't shake off. A mixture of nutrition and mental awareness got me through (Kefir, fermented foods, methylated folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, upped protein, and a general multivitamin.) Now as someone who's no longer EXPERIENCING those symptoms, things became clear on what it was in retrospect. I had to do research, explore life, and go through years of therapy. Practice mindfulness. Pay attention to your nutrition. Compare what you're not doing and objectively what a human body needs to be healthy, fill those nutritional and activity gaps. Your body needs exercise, nature, sunlight, human interaction, even when your mind doesn't feel like it. Often what your mind wants WILL BE at odds with what your body needs, sometimes even with reality itself if you don't keep yourself in check. Those feelings of "I have no energy..." "My body hurts too much to leave bed." "No one understands why I CAN'T do it! It hurts too much/I feel sick/I feel too sad/my body hurts/there's no where to walk/I'm afraid of leaving my house/I'm afraid of socializing/society is too cruel to interact with" "Exercising sucks. I don't want to be hot/sweaty/uncomfortable" (although some of them were true) were excuses. Baby steps. Find a way where you CAN do it. Start with the laziest, easiest, healthiest solutions, and build your habits off of that. Nutrition is REALLY REALLY important. Food effects your mood. If you follow any advice AT LEAST start with your vitamin levels. Those can raise your energy levels and mood just enough to get your foot in the door (to do the more difficult stuff like take a walk or go for a hike.) If you're in the thick of your depression, and you feel like there's no way out, there is. Start your personal journey. Clean up your life. Don't allow society to box you in. Grow yourself. The sunk-cost fallacy will ruin your life. We're allowed to change ourselves on a whim. Swap paths. Swap degrees. Social circles and careers. Free yourself.

@blooming_Lotus1493
@blooming_Lotus1493 Рік тому
@@jillwilson5326 maybe yours is a more severe case, my maniac episodes aren't dangerous for my overall wellbeing, like engaging in reckless behavior such as drinking and driving or other activities that could cause major damage to myself, all I get is a hit of dopamine which increase my motivation to get more productive, NGL, sometimes I can get obsessed with learning about a new subject, often learning strategies to cope with the deficient parts of my life for example, and getting hiper focused on learning about it, but that's about it, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Now, there are people with the same condition whom experience maniac episodes differently, often doing things they'll potentially regret shortly after, in those cases unfortunately they can't stop medication for their own safety, however, I've met many people with the same condition that did pretty good with the same copying mechanisms I've adopted, it all boils down to how you experience your maniac episodes and how long have you been taking your meds and which meds you were taking, lithium is a mood stabilizer not necessarily an antipsychotic, now if besides lithium you've been prescript antipsychotic meds as well then I'd take it easy, start doing the same things I mentioned above like diet, sleep and so on while slowly decreasing the doses of your meds every other month, if you've been on meds for two years or longer for example, it'll take at least a year to go totally off the meds safely by the decreasing doses process, but it's still worth trying. I wish you good luck!

I wonder if that means someone like me can be helped. I can’t remember much trauma when I was a child as I was a loved and a bit spoilt and over protected We did travel the world 🌎( army kid) a lot and I did so many different schools in so many different countries-I managed to have an average education Always remember feeling a bit disorientated with peoples different accents in the different countries ! Generally a happy child although quite sensitive - I was stunned and upset for days at 8years old when a women went to hospital to have a baby and a 👶 baby died. I can remember crying to my mum but I can’t remember her response.Although I’m sure she was she would’ve been understanding and tried to explain it. But the time I was 10 I was lying in bed (back in UK ) when the cat was out every single night I would lie in bed worrying that it would get killed when it was out but daytime I Arose and I was back happy again- Rebellious teenager time came I had a bit of trouble at school and although I wasn’t allowed to mix with boys I ended up with an older boyfriend I was 13 he was 19. I ended up having his baby at 17 and leaving him at 21 due to his continuous violence and he was violent even when I was a teenager. My friend can never understand why I wasn’t a spoiled brat as I always was sharing my things and was very considerate - I think I was trying to be the nice girl mum wanted - I had a sister 12-years older than me but it was obvious I was the favourite one. Anyway by then 21 I left with my child As managed to get away but I ended up with another guy who was emotionally abusive and alcoholic. I never see signs of this because I was so pleased to be away from the first marriage I had a son with husband no 2 Who was autistic maybe he was vaccination damage this started to think about all the vaccines that I had over the years because my main mind was always in a state of turmoil. My mother was always helping me and my kids with household chores and finance although they were on minimum wages .By that time I was working due to the alcoholic partner couldn’t keep a job and I was working in child residential care I learn about issues of attachment here.and then started to do an extra study my daughters boyfriend was able to help me with a written work for the first two years and my other friends from then on and I ended up with a degree in social work . I had the information but I could not put it into a coherent pattern so people could understand. After two relationships one was a mutual split up and the other one I was with a narcissistic type I have been in a job for 13 years. At this job my boss was very good at just playing to my strengths supporting people ideas creativity etc I had a strong urge to protect young people. When redundancy happened which was only three years ago I have already had three jobs and each time that confusion no I’m 62 is overwhelming, I have had a stroke when I was 59 but I have recovered well and I cannot say that My brain is any worse although it showed up on the scanner as I have brain damage. But how do they know that wasn’t done with the many blows to the head when I was with my first husband from 13 to 21? I have since been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia but I’m not convinced of these things but I cannot see where I’ve had a Adverse childhood trauma. Because before my violent relationship at a young age - i was already very easy lead very easily fooled was very impulsive and naughty. Although my mum would never admit it. Oh my God the things I have tried medication but very short lived, the Dore program Which cost me nearly £2000 and they kept telling me that I was better on their charts but I never felt I was getting any better on a day-to-day basis. Yoga -meditation and some Machine that I plugged into my head and listen to strange noises. I’ve always managed to make friends and keep them but I often play the one down position and never challenge if I think my friends are wrong about something or very rarely or if I do I think my words very very carefully because I don’t wanna upset anybody. Both my children have grown up and had problems but thank goodness they’ve worked through them and even my son who is autistic hold a job and my daughter who used to drink is now sober and she’s holding a position as a Counsellor and I’m proud of them both. I count my blessings because I know that some people never had any love to fall back on from the family but I still don’t understand why my brain is like my brain. I really enjoyed what this lady said today and I’m going to buy a book ASAP I have countless books and brains et cetera but I hope this one is going to be the one I also hope to get my brain in gear because I’m on a trial now for this job and I’m going to go and try medication just so that I may cope until I can do something else. The problem is I feel is that I never really know the root cause and if I knew the root cause I think that makes the treatment clearer. Sometimes I have believed I have a brain dysfunction and I’m ADHD And sometimes I just think I’ve got a lazy brain and it’s been lazy for years. I forgot to mention I’ve also been to Peru and Holland and tried psychedelics , Psychedelics are meant to open the Connections to the neurons in the brain un the brain-the Ayahuasca and the Mushrooms. I still believe in those in the sense that they could help but of course I’m in UK so that’s a no-no now. I am also doing psycho psychotropic breath work but as with meditation and yoga my brain 🧠 just wonders off and I don’t keep my focus. So I’m really hoping this book 📚 is going to help

I stopped talking for three years once. It was something that happened. I didn't plan on this, but I won't spend time on the how or why of it right now but want to share what happened instead. At first, I noticed how many thoughts I had, and how much my mind ruminated. Over time the thoughts played themselves out and stopped altogether until one day when my daughter told, her brother that she was going to stop talking to mom because her only response is an occasional grunt. This is what made me come out of silence but soon realized I'd forgotten language. I struggled to put sentences together. The most amazing part of this experience was that I became very psychic, and knew things I shouldn't know. There are lots of examples I could share, but here's a quick one. My daughter and I were in the yard. I looked at her while pointing at a huge tree. I pulled her back about a yard. I knew the tree was going to fall. We stepped back a few feet and the tree fell with its tip landing right in front of our feet. Overall, this was a positive life-changing experience that changed my life forever. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on how the brain responds to long term silence.

This is still spiritual the way she is talking she explains both the spiritual and the science behind it. In reality science is the exploration of things we know exist but can't prove until we do; The things unseen by the naked eye. There are those who would say they don't believe in souls. And you ask them why and they will say because i can't see it with my eyes or touch it with my hands and until i do i won't believe....okay.. But you are willing to believe in Atoms and Radioactive energy and can you see these things with your naked eyes. No. But that's different. i know they exist. Since most people aren't scientists and you are an average person like myself how do you know this personally? ... Well i trust the understanding of a scientist who went to school. I mean they study the sciences and the things that we can't see. Okay but once nobody understood that things existed either until it was discovered. And i say well you still can't see it with your own eyes so how can you believe what this science is showing you is accurate? Theories are disproved all the time I mean look at Aristotle some of the theories he built up were quite sound in his time and were later disproven by other great minds. Okay yeah i see your point. Are you saying there are no absolutes? No I'm saying that every day you use a combination of faith and science with how you think and your very mind itself is a spiritual thing. Hence is why i believe that we all have a soul. I mean look at the marvel of electricity. It has always been here and there and so sometimes it is not about what you can see or touch but what you can feel when you reach down to the very core of your being and you search for a knowledge that is as old as Time. There are truths we know on a primal or spiritual level. And this woman has given an insightful explanation of the force and power of our mind. But by explaining the difference between the mind and the brain, she explains that the mind is a separate entity a force of its own. This is our mind ourselves our true essence. Separate from our brain and not physical. Sounds a lot like a soul to me.

A standing ovation to this woman 👏👏👏. She is speaking on behalf of lot of people going through this. Once I cried and complained about something then my dad tried to label me as mentally ill and told me to go to psychiatrist and take pills, and completely rejected and didn't listened to the reason why I felt hurt in the first place . I felt speechless...that he is labeling me instead of listening to me. You can't heal a wound without taking the thorn away. Take out the thorn, the wound will heal by itself. As simple as that. And what happened on that day was he shouted at me for no reason on some beautiful occasion and I felt hurt and cried and told him not to shout at me, I tried to draw the borders with him, then he said this...I was like...ahh! And speechless. Look at the entire scenario...people label us as mentally ill only because we took pills at some point in our lives to really help ourselves and they label us for an entire life time even when we are out of it!
