I have to wonder about the logic of the charge port on the RD…one of the potentially wettest areas on a bike. Let’s hope the seal is tight, and impossible leave undone or with fully waterproof connections!

It would be nice if they let you put existing DI2 into 12 speed mode, seeing as there is no inherent indexing, they would just have to drive the motor a different amount. That way you could upgrade cassette and chain and move 11 -> 12 speed.

I heard the news earlier today, and when I had time came straight to your video for the run down. Wish it was more like the GRX hoods and d-fly buttons on the inside. Are the disk calipers user service-able with the 3 hole piston cap or is that just design?

I have always been more than satisfied with nearly all aspects of shimano . Hopefully the slightly heavier cranks means that they have fixed the failures of the two piece bonded crank arms. I'll keep a watch online in 2022 for any problems. Apart from that the new groupset looks superb.

Super excited about the Ultegra stuff. No chance I'm spending Dura Ace money. I love the looks of the new hoods though. Does that curved shape carry over to the Ultegra models as well?

Good stuff, although I feel no urge to upgrade from the old Ultegra Di2. Maybe some day!

So the previous freehub is compatible with the new cassette which suggests the widths for the new 12sp cassettes must be the same as the old 11sp. Which also suggests that the RD throw from bottom to top is the same. Won’t be long before someone jailbreaks the older 9150/70 11sp to run the 12sp (11-30) cassettes. The old and new levers are just dumb up/down switches so no problems there.

I’m most interested in their new hydraulic brakes. Not the sexiest components, but a real source of issues. Apparently they actuate a bit more quickly and then in a more modulated manner that improves feel. Also a tick more space between the pads to allow more room for rotor clearance as you noted.

Now this makes me want a new bike, pity the rim version is not wireless.

so i got around to upgrading to a modern bike. My current bike is a Cervelo R3 with aftermarket Shimano 7970 Di2 and a Quarq power meter. the setup has been fantastic. I now also have an Trek SLR7 with Ultegra 12 speed Di2 and I was amazed how much better my 7970 from 2010 still is. the shiftine is way more quiet on my 7970 Di2 and my bike weighs in at 7.2kg which is less than the trek. So as far as progress goes I am struggling to see it

so if wireless module failed we have to purchase another RD?

Awesome content, well done (but I find the clicking fingers noise sharp and annoying, and it happens a lot in the videos - that's prob just me).

I was hoping the groupsets would be 1x12 capable with appropriate wide-range road gearing...oh well. I've just never gotten 2x11 Shimano mechanical drivetrains to shift well on the front and run quietly front and rear. That's been true of several bikes and with several expert mechanics going over the drivetrains.

Could I use the new crankset with my 11-sp Ultegra groupset? I want to have power and this might be a nice way...if the new crankset (w power) is ever available separately... Thx.

I have to say I'm feeling like Shimano took a step backwards when it comes to an end user supporting their own Di2 system on the new R9200 and R8100. I have the new R8100 and I'm unable to upgrade the firmware on shifters. It seems that they must be connected via a wire in order to perform the upgrade. So, I've ordered a 1600mm cable and a junction so I can plug in the shifters to the front derailer to do the firmware updates. I also can't seem to enable synchronized shifting. The e-tube app says it's enabled. In fact, the e-tube app will only let me set up synchronized shifting on shift mode 1 and shift mode 2. OR, I can set up semi-synch on mode 1 and mode 2. I can't set up synch on mode 1 and semi-synchro on mode 2, or vice versa. I guess that's what I get for being an early adopter. Maybe the synchro shifting will be fixed when I can update my shifters, although I'd think that would be done by the derailers.

Funny how they decided to change rotors now. Was surprised a while back when I first realized the MTB rotors are lighter compared to Dura Ace.

Hmm, can work as “wired” and “semi-wireless”. Does it mean there might be a cheaper transition path where one keeps levers, battery & cabling, and just changes derailleur(s)? Has the compatibility chart been released yet?

I got a MINT condition 9070 full groupo for 1100 AUD back in June. Now it would be worth even less despite being lighter and easier to tune.

I hoped to see some new chainring formats, as 46/33 for us non pros. I will have to stick with SRAM then.

I am assuming the newly designed brakes work with previous di2 levers and installation points. That extra 1% clearance mentioned in gcn video doesn’t exactly sound immense but hopefully rotor material improvement will help with the clunking and scraping from hell 🤣. 11-34 will be awesome on my local Italian torture ramps!

Hello Shane, running DI2 9150 rim brake which ergonomics are terrible, “short” hand position on hoods. Is there a upgraded model with improved ergonomics?

Will the new derailleurs be plug and play with the older shifters? Since there is a wired option, could be a cheaper upgrade path, just need a new rear derailleur and cassette.

Any compatibility available? I’m wondering if the new disk brake caliper could be fitted with GRX levers…

Does anyone know whether the new DuraAce R9200 will connect to a Garmin head unit via bluetooth so the D-Fly shifter buttons work without requiring the add on wireless units that you needed on previous generations? I cant find this out 100% anywhere. Don't think Shane covered this?

I hope the rear derailleur is backwards compatible. Surely shimano can give an update to the current shifters to do 12sp. It took them too long to do hyperglide plus on a road bike. Kinda embarrassing down shifting and giving off a loud clunk.

Heads up: you cannot update the firmware of the shifters wirelessly, at least on the Ultegra 8170’s. To update them, you have to connect them via the wire and then flash the firmware. This is easy to do when you have everything on the bench, just unplug the FD and plug the wire into the shifter you want to update. But what do you do when things are on the bike? I haven’t seen anyone mention this yet but ran into it the first hour when doing firmware updates on a brand new groupset and testing prior to installation. This got me to thinking how will I do this once everything is installed, bars wrapped, etc Throwing out a few ideas to work around Idea 1: Plan ahead and use an extra cable (3rd) connected to the battery and dropped down to the bottom bracket where you could connect a junction box when you need to do maintenance. Most bikes allow access through the frame at the bottom bracket and if you had the 3rd cable there, you just plug in a junction box and the use another SD-300 cable to connect the shifter for updates or connect an EW-AD305 to go from SD-300 to SD-50 to connect the SM-PCE. Idea 2: Pull you seat and have enough slack in the cable to the RD and FD to expose the batter connectors while remaining connected to the RD and temporarily plug in a 3rd SD-300 cable to the battery. Then with the seat post pulled, run the 3rd temporary cable to the shifter for firmware update. Same as above you could also plug in the SM-PCE with the adapter and short SD-300 cable. Idea 3: pack your bike off to the LBS. This saves money on the extra SD-300 cables and the 50/300 converter but depending on your LBS policies may cost more money… Anyone else hit this yet, have a different solution? .

What about MTB? Still no electronics on 12 speed Shimano groups. Will they use similar solution? This battery is a problem when used with dropper.

If the Casettes are backwards compatible with the 11-speed hub what´s the benefit of developing and using a new 12-speed hub?

Why not use the standard 2032 coin cell battery? They are available at like every gas station or grocery store around the world. Also, it's pretty much the standard battery for heart rate monitors, power meters, SRAM Shifters, watches, etc.; which means I can keep one or two of those in my tool box or saddle bag and never worry about needing an oddball battery.

So for rim brake you still need the junction boxes? also wonder when GRX will inherit the wireless shifters?

I know it is really early but do you know if it is possible to upgrade an Ultegra DI2 to the new Ultegra Wireless DI2?
