This is not a fact. I live in New York and our streets are filled with cars everyday and I own a car I’m on these roads everyday. I make a trip from north BK to flushing queens trust me there are more cars than bikes but the city is extremely congested. This change has been something developing over the past 10 years, and they’re trying to get people out of their cars example being : congestion pricing in manhattan. Nobody wants electric cars because most native NYERS don’t have time to find a charging station and go charge their car for more than 20 minutes. 5 minutes at a gas station in the morning will make you late

Here are my reasons for not wanting to buy an EV. 1.) The lack of infrastructure that supports EV chargers 2.) The long wait times for charging as opposed to a gasoline powered vehicle. And this isn’t taking into account charging at home (which will increase your electric bill) but on road trips. 5 minutes to fill is a full tank as opposed to over an hour to charge a nearly dead EV. 3.) The prices are awful, sure you can say they’re terrible in general because of the car market, but even taking that into account, they’re more expensive an equivalent gasoline car. 4.) This one is purely personal but I love the sound of internal combustion engines.

I really wanna get my hands on an EV so I could charge right at home, unlike in a city. Not having a gas station in town means an EV would solve the problem of having to take small trips just to get gas. I think i would still want to have a gas car since out here cars are king and you have to rely on them for everything- and I don't trust EV infrastructure. Like Cash pointed out, majority of cars in NYC are parked on the street. So, there is little to no way to charge an EV while it is parked. Charging at home is typically how most EV owners charge their EV. Parking garages at apartment buildings are so expensive that people are willing to get a parking ticket weekly than pay for a parking spot. NYC increased the fines for alternate side parking just for that. EV charging stations within the 5 boroughs are pretty much nonexistent at public spaces or where it's freely accessible. Those that exist are inside parking garages that you have to pay more than a tankful of gas on a regular ICE vehicle to access. With that Flo/PlugNYC curbside chargers the city is trying to pilot, it's not enough to charge the sheer number of EVs are already in NYC let alone allow for any growth in EV marketshare. TLC just allowed for rideshare drivers to register EVs in order to Uber and Lyft and over 9000 applications have been received. I'm just wondering how those drivers will deal with charging considering the current lack of infrastructure.

I can imagine that NYC car owners also only own a car in order to get out of town on vacations, going to more rural areas like the Hamptons or the Berkshires, which don’t have a lot of charging stations either. So the idea of buying a $60K car that you can’t use doesn’t make sense. In the future these condos and apartment buildings will have to offer charging spots. But it’s an extremely expensive thing to install.

Lucky folks in North Carolina. Here in New Zealand, from April the standard Road User Charge ("RUC") becomes payable on all EVs. Priced at $76 per 1,000 km (about 600 miles). So a driver doing just 10,000 km or 6,000 miles per year, will have to pay $760 in RUC "kilometre fees". If you drive 20,000 km (or 12,000 miles) per year, your RUC will be $1,520 . Make sure you buy your kilometre allowance in advance because if a cop pulls you over and you're overdue, you get fined double the amount owed, plus you still have to pay what you owe. Note that Diesel small vehicles, passenger cars and utes and vans, (upo to 3 and a half tonnes) also have to pay the same level of RUC, that EVs will soon have to pay.

@@laikanbarth Thanks for your comments. Yes NZ is a unique country in many ways, and although politics vary, we probably don't have as large a left vs right divide, compared to the USA. (So our 2 main political parties are probably "closer together" than the USA's). With a land area about the same as Wyoming State, we are rather isolated in a corner of the South Pacific. Our nearest neighbour, Australia, is over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) away at the closest point. Indeed it wasn't until the mid 1800's that NZ became its own nation. Before that we were a part of the New South Wales Colony of Australia. Until the 1970's, people could fly between Australia and NZ by just showing the old type, non photo, paper driver's licence. Even now, we have the automatic right to live and work, retire, and use the free healthcare in either country. Historically the governments here in NZ tried to help local manufacturing and businesses with various quotas and taxes on imported good for example. We are at the very end of a long supply line. We are, now, especially vulnerable to problems with oil imports. Traditionally we were a big farming and forestry nation, but things like sheep shears and saw mill blades, would originally have to be imported from overseas. Previously subsidies would have helped some industries thrive here, helping to service farming and forestry industries. Now tourism is big. We have a lot of land set aside in various National Parks and Conservation areas. There are EVs with 400 or 500 mile range if you want to drive a large vehicle. But I don't see the point. My gas car has about a 240 mile range, same as many EVs. If you can charge at home (i.e., you have your own driveway), it will always be topped off. You can't do that with a gas car. In some kind of emergency situation, you're dependent on international trade to get gasoline. There have been times in not too distant memory (i.e., the 1970s) where American fuel pumps ran dry because of international politics. With an EV, if you have a house with solar panels, you have all the electricity you want. OPEC doesn't control your fuel supply. Even if you brought portable solar panels with you on your emergency trip, you could get some power slowly. An emergency where the power goes out is a lot more likely than an emergency where you have to drive 500 miles. If you're worried about like hurricane evacuations, I guess. But gas stations are packed or empty when that happens. Many modern EVs can be used as a giant emergency battery and provide power to your whole house or if you need electricity when camping. So I'd say that EVs are much more off the grid, especially if you get solar panels on your roof. You're not dependant on nothing going wrong in the Middle East or the whole system of refining down to the truck delivering gas to your local station. You just plug in and charge.

For me a hybrid that I really enjoy is Honda Fit e:HEV. The gas engine is often used for charging the battery, and sometimes work in tandem with the electric motor when your driving condition demands it. I still go to gas pump but the milage you get out of this car is super good (around 61 mpg). So I drive mostly on electric power (I'm mostly in city), no range anxiety, and no need for charging infrastructures. Best of both worlds. The only downside: I wish it packed more power, and bit more luxury. I don't live in NYC (maybe it has a different name is the US market?) but I think this car could work very well over there. It is a thing. Thieves will even go to people's driveways and cut the cables to get the copper from them. On the other hand, if you have a gas car, people can steal your catalytic converter. The only real way around this is to not leave things unattended. Put a floodlight in your driveway, charge in your garage, or don't leave the charger on the car all night, unplug it before you go to bed, etc.

EV's are great for people who have consistent access to a charger and don't generally drive long distances, but the overall infrastructure is nowhere near ready for the adoption levels the government is pushing for. My family recently took a roadtrip from Denver to Santa Cruz, CA. Somewhere in the middle of the desert, between Las Vegas and Bakersfield, we pulled over for gas. My wife asked, "Is this a Tesla dealership?" As we looked around, one end of the parking lot was filled with at least 80 Teslas, all waiting for a spot at one of the few charging stations (maybe 8?). There did not seem to be any organized queues, so I can only imagine the arguments that ensued as people jockeyed for a spot in line. We pulled away 7 minutes later with a full tank of gas, while all the Teslas were still waiting for a spot. Obviously, it takes a long time to develop infrastructure for a new technology, and that does not yet exist for EVs. Also, it took two solid days to drive from Denver to Santa Cruz. If every EV recharge required an extra 1-3 hours, this might very well turn into a 3-day trip, requiring an extra hotel night each way.

Ev infrastructure is just asinine. #1 batteries should NOT be their main energy source, they should hook onto an electric rail while on the hwy and main routes wich would charge your battery and battery would only be used on the side streets off the main roads. #2 all batteries should be universal and as easy to change out as my Dewalt drill. U shouldn't sit and wait for a battery to charge you should go to a filling station and change out your empty battery for a full one just like you do with a propane tank.

If it fits your use case, they can be amazingly affordable. I paid $21k for my EV, and in four short years have put 160,000 miles onto it. With home-supplied electricity costing about 1/4th per mile than gasoline, and never needing oil changes or brake jobs, I estimate that I have saved about $16,000 vs a comparably priced gas car. I don't think there are any places in the US that have built out the infrastructure for mass EV adoption for people without garages and free access to chargers.
