"The contract was more in their favour so we didn't take the deal." Now I'm picturing Leon at the desk wearing a pair of glasses and twiddling his claws as he listens to Mike Judge discuss the terms of the deal. After Mike Judge is done reading the contract, Brady looks at Leon for the final say. He shakes his antennae - "NO DEAL". Maybe I'm just weird but the image of a LOBSTER at the table negotiating a contract - and having the final say - is just hilarious to me LOL

@@PinkManGuy this is true i used to work in the meat department in stop and shop over 5 years ago and what i learned about that grocery store at the time with all the management was they were Cheap As hell with everything they didnt feed the lobsters they didnt even have tanks of water to put the lobsters in they left over 100 lobsters all stacked up on top of eachother in a box in the seafood freezer throughout the hours workinf there i would always go back there to check on the lobsters to see how they were doing if they were alive or dead basically they were still alive but lifeless you could literally pick them up with or without the rubber claws on there hands and they would barely move i ended up stealing a lobster for myself under my coat jacket that night and brought it home to eat basically put the poor thing out of its misery it was not great tasting at all considering its condition but its sad what they do to the lobsters at some supermarkets without proper care they are not good to eat and basically should be disposed back into the ocean although i dont even know if they would be able to adapt to the ocean life at that point beinf in that box so lifeless all that time but after quiting stop an shop tho a week latter cant account for all the other lobsters that were in that box or what happened to them to even sell them at the stage with there black dark green color was disgusting and expensive

I see I no longer need to course correct your assertion as to spiders being on “auto-pilot”. Many others have beat me to it. Life, other than human, is much more complex than most people might realize with possibilities of of greater connectivity as applied to “thinking” within the needs of their own niche as well as responses to stimuli whether it’s fear, recognition, play, etc. We do ourselves a huge injustice as well as the rest of the natural world with some terrible conceits.

As a retired teacher I must say you are doing a fantastic job of educating the public about Leon the lobster in such a way that you leave all ages enthralled by your enthusiastic, engaging method of communicating. Your way of presenting the facts about Leon is interwoven with whimsical, gently humorous views and your obviously care for him and treat him royally! You make this lobster 'come alive' for both children, teens and adults and help us to experience this lobster as a unique, personable, and fascinating creature. This reminds me of when Jane Goodall first introduced the world to chimpanzees! You clearly show such deep curiosity, appreciation and interest in Leon and are highly observant of him. This compels those of us who watch your videos to also carefully notice his behaviors in a fun, engaging manner that we never would have done otherwise! You are furthering a whole slew of budding potential scientists! Thank you! It is wonderful to watch you both studying him as well as learning directly from him about his ways and you are captivating audiences around the world by sharing this. BRAVO! In this video, I noticed Leon repeatedly 'grooming' his little 'antennas' near his mouth. So, being a curious person I simply HAD to learn more about these and here is what I found out: Those little antenna are called antennules! Cute huh! He IS mechanically 'grooming' himself as I thought by stroking these antennules over and over. He's also kind of 'oiling' these antennules with secretions to keep them clean, and keenly functional! He uses these antennules not just for smelling stuff but for a variety of sensory motor functions. I don't know his Genus or Species but depending on this he may be using them to sense movements in the water, to sense vibrations, for touch, to discern water flow., to notice his own movements and possibly also to be checking for temperature, oxygen, pH, salinity, and noxious stimuli! Antennules are very complex! How cool is THAT! To learn more go to: (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/713537)

Back when I was a kid I had two pet Goldfish that were born brothers, Bubbles and Chunk. Chunk had a disability that prevented him from using his left fin, and whenever I would feed them, Bubbles would always push him up to the surface such that his right fin was out of the water so that he could eat all the food without any competition. When Chunk eventually died, we decided to get a bunch of smaller fish to keep him company. In less than a week he had cannibalized them in order to keep the food to himself, which I didn't even know goldfish could or would do. Most amusingly of all, I learned that if you ever shined a laser pointer into his aquarium, he would chase it like a cat, which I've never seen a Goldfish do before. He lived to be about 12 years old thanks to all his survival instincts, which also included sucking on the pebbles at the bottom of the bowl if he was ever still hungry after I had fed him, and really gave me a new perspective when thinking about just how intelligent a simple animal like a goldfish really could be.

10 years ago I worked in a fine restaurant. It was a small place, but very expensive. We only had 7 tables, and the captain's table, which was the only table in the place for 12 people. We had an Aquarium the size of a wall. In fact, it was a wall. Since it divided the living room from the kitchen. In it we had practically everything, lobsters, crabs, clams, even oysters and some fish. During my last summer there, the owners decided that maintaining the aquarium was too expensive. So after some debate, there was a long discussion between the owner and his daughter, who defended that the aquarium was part of the restaurant's brand, and the owner who said that the bills were just too expensive. In the end , they ended up removing it, they sold part of the animals to other restaurants, and left only a few that we kept in a much smaller fish tank in front of the restaurant with the "catch of the day" sign. It was more like a box with some stones and shellfish in a decorative theme. One day, the executive chef, who was an underwater fishing enthusiast, showed up with a lobster the size of a cat. I´m not jking , it was the biggest lobster I've ever seen in my life, neither in documentaries nor on the internet had I seen one of that size. It was incredible. At first I was impressed, cuz I though that it was gonna be an easy sell... but as the days went by I began to feel really bad for the poor animal. Although we offered it every night, nobody agreed to pay what they were asking for, 60 Euros for 100 grams, and the animal weighed more than 5 kg. The problem was that in the last months we only had couples and small groups, and none was interested in that huge amount of "food". They kept him for months in that box, without feeding him. Every night they put in the the fridge with a wet towel at his back. And every morning they put him outside in the fish tank under the constant sunlight. During his last days the animal barely moved, but he was still alive. In the end they ended up selling it to a (sry for the expression) a very fat couple. Although, I thought "finally". The worst was yet to happen... I will never forget that night. The cooks stuck a chop knife in its back, the animal that had been dying for months began to move and try to walk on the table while the cooks took selfies and laughed at the movements that the lobster made. that macabre show lasted at least 15 minutes. While some of the waiters entered the kitchen to see what was happening, some left scared and others just laughed along with the cooks. Finally, they cut it open in half, while it was still moving, and put it on the grill. I started to feel dizzy and almost throw up. In the end, I told my boss that I wasn't feeling well, I called a taxi and went home and never went back to that place. After a few weeks, since they had brought it. I had felt the urge to dump it in the bay, even if it cost me my job. but I never did. And looking back, I really dunno why. When I saw this video, and I saw that someone had set up an aquarium to save a lobster. I remembered everything, such a bad memory. I think that if I had been more mature back then, or maybe if I didn´t care that much about money as today, I would probably have done something more to save that poor animal. I applaud what you have done and I wish Leon a long and happy lobster life.

These are innate characteristics and instincts that all lobsters are born with, and will resort to when left to their own devices in a normal habitat setting. Lobsters are not farm raised like some other kinds of seafood, and they are always caught in the wild, so that is where Leon started out before he was caught and ended up in a grocery store. When Brady bought him from the grocery store, he then placed Leon in a habitat closely aligned with what Leon’s natural habitat would be like. Through the progression of the videos, we have been able to observe Leon transform in both appearance, physicality and behavior, and all of those things have gradually resulted in him now behaving like a normal lobster would in their natural habitat. Hence, Leon is now once again back to behaving like he once did in the wild before being caught by humans.

@@watchhobbywithdannythemedic do you not understand how animals work lol lobsters have something called instinct, (which he even mentions in this video!) and that means its in their nature to do what they do. not all animals will have the same set of instincts, but in this case, lobsters are animals who share instinct. thats why leon got threatened at the sight of his own reflection because it was his instinct to act that way, thinking that it could be an uninvited guest. since he is in a home similar to the one he would be in if he were in the wild, he has the instinct to live the way he does, so he wouldve lived the same way he does now.

Wow. Just... _WOW._ I found my way to this 3rd Leon installment from his rescue from the grocery store and I just want to say thank you. It's hard for human beings to understand animals sometimes, but "even" this lobster has great affection and gratitude for you. It's very clear from your evolving relationship. When you took the bands off and were testing his claws daily... he knew exactly what was up and enjoyed his therapy. Videos like your's help people to see and experience a small glimpse of the great work you and those like you do. It helps them see that all living creatures deserve love, compassion and respect. _THANK YOU_ ❤

You would have to be okay with a _MANY_ decades long commitment (quite possibly the rest of your life!), investment in an expensive large tank (and room in your home for it with no plans of moving to a place that wouldn’t have enough room for such a large tank, or moving out of the country, etc), and obviously constant upkeep/tank cleaning, buying nice fresh food for it every week, and perhaps even supplying some intellectual stimulation or companionship for it somehow, if necessary. I know that most bird/parrot owners quickly regret taking on such a long commitment because they don’t fully grasp how much goes into it, and will sadly give their bird away to a rescue or interested party within the first few years when they are over the amount of time and effort that is require for their companion to be happy and healthy and well cared for - they simply become inconvenient. But the birds always suffer immensely being handed off to new owners because they become very depressed/anxious from such a drastic change, often resorting to self-harm by neurotically plucking out their feathers. 😢 They are very intelligent and emotional beings, and sadly so many owners will neglect these birds, making things even worse. The typical parrot goes through _MANY_ owners in its lifetime because of how long they live, so it is especially selfish and egregious for an older person to get a young parrot or pet that is destined to live for many decades. Lobsters obviously don’t require the amount of affection and time being spent with them that birds require, but if they are well taken care of, they too will indeed live for decades. They will require you to be decently young/live long enough for that super long commitment, so that they hopefully won’t go through any more than one other owner besides you - as well as you knowing that you will always have room for their large tank and will be fit enough to maintain it routinely for a long time, etc.. And considering that there is no such thing as lobster rescues, I’m guessing that it if it wasn’t a dear friend or family member that happily took in your lobster, it is sadly likely someone would lie to you or the lobster’s next owner about their intentions, choosing to eat the poor thing if it needed to be re-homed because it outlived you, or you needed to move to a smaller place/a place that wouldn’t allow large aquatic tanks/out of the country/etc.. I absolutely hope that more people rescue lobsters, but those that do need to first be sure to thoroughly think it through, and not take the serious commitment on in an impulse. I love that your son is willing to help you! I would hope that the plan would also include his promise to you that he will take the lobster on as his personal pet life-long commitment if you die before the lobster dies, which is very likely when you read about how incredibly long they can live in captivity (or he’ll take in the lobster earlier if you become unable to properly care for it due to health problems from older age, etc).. My intent is to not discourage you from such a noble choice to rescue such an incredible creature - one that obviously doesn’t deserve any of the suffering torment/torture and early death they are all being put through. My only intent is to remind you to thoroughly inform yourself before you go through with it. I got my parrot when I was only 16, for my birthday, whilst not really understanding what a huge commitment I was taking on at the time. *COUNTLESS* sacrifices have been made in my life because of my serious commitment to him. My older brother, on the other hand, grossly got and re-homed 3 parrots within the span of 5 years or so, just because he didn’t take the commitment seriously and they became “inconvenient” (even worse, he was not their first owner either!). I can’t fathom the amount of emotional and probably even physical pain those parrots have gone through in their lives just because they were handed off from owner to owner (if they are even still alive that is, because so many “accidents” happen with bad/ignorant/neglectful caretaking, causing very early deaths). It breaks my heart just thinking about it. Sorry for such a long post, and sorry if this was too depressing and ending it on such a sad note! Forgive me, and take care. :)

So long as you keep caring for him, Leon has a good chance to outlive you. Lobsters get bigger and bigger but they also just kind of stop aging, senessence just sort of doesnt happen for them. They stay vital and in their prime right up to death, and they can live 35-45 years in the wild.

A change like that will bring new viewers to your channel and help keep people interested. Side notes, I wonder how far lobsters travel in their natural habitat throughout their lives. How big does a tank need to be so that a lobster doesn't feel confined.
