According to the punter, that play was never supposed to get snapped if the right thing doesn't happen. I think they are trying to fake a substitution and get the opponents to have 12+ on the field. This didn't happen so they were supposed to just take delay of game and punt but the guy that ends up as the center was a sub for a guy that got injured earlier in the game and had never practiced that play. Oops.

The other side is called heaven. There are multiple options for the quarterback. The play causes confusion. Granted I know these are pros but it did work in popwarner and I've seen it work in college

If they ran it once and didn't get in, they would use their timeout. Then when they ran it again the clock would run out and they would lose. But if you pass and it's incomplete then the clock stops, and you still have 2 opportunities afterwards. If Malcolm Butler never picked off that ball, people would either forget about Pete Carroll's call or call it smart clock management.
