Kurt is 1 of the only musicians to ever have gone through an entire MTV Unplugged in 1 take. Almost every other unplugged had to be edited and put together. He sat down and played the whole show in one shot. This is what he was capable of. RIP Kurt. We miss you

They're spitting and throwing things at his very expensive camera. There's another version I've seen which includes Narduar's entrance and more "respectful" behavior. Courtney apparently arranged the interview, I don't think the boys were on board. To be fair, Narduar takes shit from everyone. Still, having actually been around at this time, my memory of Kurt is not one of a respectful guy. More irreverent and borderline personality types of shit. Whatever you say, though. I really liked Nirvana back in the day, had all their studio records and a bunch of "bootleg" records. I'm not even mad that he was that way. I just would never characterize his behaviors as respectful. He was trying to shock you.

Man, I'm 70 years old but I miss Kurt. I can only imagine what kind of music he'd be playing today. I'm sure it wouldn't be pop-rock or dance music. This is a David Bowie song. You should listen to him doing it, too. Like Jim Morrison, Kurt is probably jamming with the rest of the greats up in heaven.

only that you didnt mention any "great musician"^^ its nice music, i listen to it sometimes to and enjoy it. but i mean i like it, if my children paint pictures for me and i hang them up. it doenst have to be ... hieronymus bosch, monet, van gogh or picasso all the time. in this picture, kurt cobain, jim morrisson and david bowie are the children and for example hiromi uehara, art tatum, miles davis, franz liszt, paganini, beethoven, bach and friends are the picassos of course.

@@wurstfinger3289 Well "great musicians" is a subjective term and people like all kinds of different music. Some people don't like Bach. Doesn't mean he wasn't great. If somebody is really good at what they do I don't care what kind of music it is, I pay attention. Kurt was good at what he did. Musicians don't want to be categorized or stuck in a box of some kind, they want to be free to explore and experiment with new things. That's why I hate it when you're at a concert and some yahoo keeps yelling out for the band to do some old song. It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new. The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. That's just noise. I like everything from "Iko Iko" by the Dixie Cups to "29 Palms" by Robert Plant.

" Kurt was good at what he did." yes. "It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new." depends if there was a positive developement, go for it. but in cultural industrialized productions, this is a rarity. "The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. " thats somehting YOU dont like. go for your 3chordsongs your whole life. great musician of course reach for more. its not my problem if majorities stay in your nutshell the rest of their lifes^^ wont happen to me. @@wurstfinger3289 Like I said, I'm 70 years old and music is my main interest. During my life I have heard so many different kinds of music from all over the world. There was a time during the '50s when some jazz musicians were experimenting with dissonance. The sound was quite chaotic/confused and not really pleasing to the human ear except as a curiosity and it didn't last long. But you can listen to the most intricate jazz and it harmonizes in some fashion no matter how obtusely. So I know the difference between harmony and dissonance. Even in ancient Africa the natives made drums that harmonized. And what is "cultural industrialized productions"?
@wurstfinger3289
@wurstfinger3289 3 роки тому
@@johnallen2771 cultural industry in very short means enlightment as instrument of massdesception. culture in capitalistic societies has to follow the same dictation of capital, as the industrial production. most important is not the cultural aspect but the value-realization. its not about art, its about selling. so the product doesnt have to be cultural valuable, it has to be easy to consume, easy to understand. it has to have nothing challenging, nothing that could make the individual grow with it. it has to be that easy, that after a day of 8-10 hours work, you can just relax and do nothing, while this music is played. actually, you dont even really need to listen. you can do anything else parallel to it. so its not challenging products, its degenerative products. its a term not only usefull for music but also for movies, architecture, ... culture. you can see it everywhere, if you take a closer look. the theroy calls out 2 phases: before that, in the liberal days, art was used for progressive, emancipative, critical action with some impact. it was mostly about resistance. its been about free art and stuff. now, in the late capitalism, the art is not free anymore, because "freedom" doenst necessarily express itself in getting money. "free art" in the very most cases means poor artist. very poor artist. nowadays, art lost a lot of its substance. "under my umbrella ella ella e e e" (rihanna) or eric claptons always the same and not very various guitar"licks" as an example. he s not scofield, joscho stephan or david fiuzcinsky. the impact, that this has on society: the autonomous individual will be replaced by a hetereonomous one. thats what we can see all over the world. the "world of culture" becomes seperated in one very small part of real authentic arts and a big one, produced in an industrial way: mass production of easy things, no complex messages and so on. means: the art doesnt communicate or interact with the individual anymore, because the individual is degraded to a consumer. the topics will be only ... easy stuff, superficialities. cultural industry is massculture, as a weapon of assimilation. its as adorno and horckheimer said: "culture today is infecting everything with sameness".

Back in the summer 2003 I was 13 years old. I was living in a remote Russian region with no internet connection. I told my friend, that I had no music to listen to, every tape I had (yeah, tapes) had bored me and I needed something new. He said, I have Nirvana, that's my brother's tape, but I can give it to you.I said, yeah, "I heard about them". So he gave it to me. I listened to it couple of times, my favourite songs were SLTS, Rape me, About a girl, Polly, Where did you sleep last night and The man who sold the world. I was thinking, shit, that band is really cool. I didn't know, they were not out there anymore. Couple of days later I went through old Russian magazines from 90s, which my family stored in the attic. I found an article from the year 1996 - Two year without Kurt Cobain. I was like, what, wait a minute. I read the story about his suicide, I was shocked, went back to my room and turned on the record. That was the most intimate music experience of my whole life. I was lying on my bed listening to all these song and the minute the solo on The man who sold the world kicked in I started to cry. I didn't know English at that time, all I understood was the title, that gave up the idea of the song. Also I didn't know that it was "a David Bowie song" and that such an artist even exist (at that time and again - no internet, remote Russian region). Couple of years later I learned how to play this song and learned the lyrics (they were pretty much close to what I was expecting them to be). Either way - this is one of the greatest music performances of all time and I really enjoy to relive that moment from 2003 everytime when I listen to it

I always thought about this song being a story from the pov of Bowie. He has finally reached the height of his fame. After his performance, he walks backstage. He passes a figure in the shadows, one that he recognizes. It was that of a man whom he had heard rumors about in his circles in the depths of the music industry. The figure was a man who had reached the height of power and wealth. He made trillions off of the suffering and death of millions of people. He was the man who sold the world. Then, Bowie speaks with him. The song is about his brief, backstage, brush with a man so unbelievably powerful that no one even knows who he is.

I was in high school when I learned of his death. I’ll never forget that day. I arrived at school to at least 100 students holding hands in a circle on the football field crying. I asked someone what was going on and they said Kurt Cobain was dead. I didn’t listen to grunge or most rock in those days but I definitely liked Nirvana. See in those days MTV actually played music videos, so you pretty much got exposed to a lot genres. Watching all those kids stand together having their own moment of silence in unity was very powerful. This cover reminds me of that time. Beautiful and Powerful. 😎

I absolutely love seeing how they all get into it when playing. Like the head bobs and eyes closed. Seems like magic

2:37 the way Pat looks at Kurt, in admiration, like thinking, "dude, you´'re so hard with yourserf, if you only could see you as we see you..., you're doing it so beatiful...."

What's really a trip is I am 61 and just really started to listen to Nirvana. A band I never paid attention when they were around. This is a masterpiece. RIP Kurt.

Nirvana could've just performed their greatest hits for the MTV Unplugged like AIC did, but instead decided to pay tribute to other artists as well, and the final results were legendary masterpiece performances like this one. David Bowie himself even preferred this version as well.

I'm glad we got either performance. AiC's show was after Kurt's suicide, and they hadn't performed together in years. Layne clearly wasn't doing well. Opening with "Nutshell" definitely set the mood for it. I'm glad we have these shows to look back on, but I'd rather Kurt and Layne were still around. Maybe Kurt would've even appeared with Mad Season.

I heard this song on the radio first thing this morning when I got up and hopped in the shower. Music can have more power at that time, it can color the rest of a day. "Begin the day with a friendly voice, a companion unobtrusive." I stopped for a second to just admire that section where the "solo" is just a play on the melody but goddamn it just swells up inside of you. Been saying this album is on my list of 10 to take on a deserted island for decades.

@@D-Fens_1632 Well said and agreed. String instruments have tremendous power especially during a solo or bridge of a song. It is usually the part of the song that strikes the deepest.
