Remember when Kurt stopped in the middle of a concert to stop a sexual assault? And then the rest of the band members laughed at the dude who did it and made HIM feel uncomfortable? I do. A beautiful musician, gone too soon.

There was also that one time they had a concert in some latin-american country. They had an all-girl band as their opening act, and they got boo-ed of stage. Kurt was pissed at the crowd after that, so they played the first chords to "Smells like Teen Spirit" and just stopped to tease them several times, then just played songs nobody wanted to hear until they ended the concert early. There's footage of it here on youtube, it's pretty funny.

The same people who listen to Nirvana/RATM and are homophobic/sexist are the same people who don't realise they're the ones being criticized in movies like the matrix and fight club. It's so bizzare how so many people are just blatantly ignorant like that.
@henriquepacheco7473
@henriquepacheco7473 2 роки тому
I think this very channel talks about it in a video about RATM, but to a certain extent, these people sympathize with the way the message is presented. Nirvana, just like RATM, has an anger and irreverence that feel justified and purposeful, and that moves much faster than the lyrics do. You can listen to one of their songs and get the feeling that the music carries, even if the don't understand the lyrics (be it ignorance or in some cases never having even read or heard them properly). It feels absolutely like shit, but sometimes people will just get the anger and not get how to direct it at the systems that the band is desperately signaling at with their lyrics.
@Yaldabub

Fight club is about the feeling of being trapped as a man in modern society and being unable to unleash your true self. American Psycho has a similar message. The Matrix is also a metaphor for feeling trapped, feeling like your life is fake etc. These are all films about individuals who can't be themselves and are trapped by societal standards. It's something I relate to on an emotional level myself.
@Saethyr
@Saethyr 4 місяці тому
@Yaldabub fight club is about the idiocy of traditional masculinity. The author said he wrote it to piss certain people off. American Psycho is about a serial killer, and is a criticism of capitalism. The matrix is about philosophy and being transgender. Please take a media literacy class. I also recommend getting therapy if you think American Psycho is relatable.

Cobain + Nirvana have a weird relation with South Americans. The first incident I heard was how he walked past a child shooting up on heroin in the street. Openly just sitting there on the sidewalk and the kid looked up at him and smiled saying "Hey, Kurt Cobain, Nirvana ! ! ! You guys rock" or something close to that. It was a heck of a blow for him because he was also starting to use himself but I don't think he saw his own habit as being a way of condoning it for others. Today I've got a couple of Brazilian friends on Facebook. They often share Kurt Cobain meme's a lot which is weird because the context of the ones I have translated promotes an oddly skewed perception of Nirvana. They have a very right wing leaning ideology and yet they seem to LOVE NIRVANA. Am I correct for the majority or do you think I probably just have some weird ass facebook friends ? ? ?

It means fighting for equality, also in these (few) aspects where men are disadvantaged.You might not experience it (or just won't admit it) but men are suffering from toxic masculinity too. Now, the phenomenon of this toxicity explains why some men opress women, but it's not excusing it. "Hating men" directly translates to hating patriarchy. Feminism is not hypocritical. But some men are very pressed about being confronted with the flaws of their own perspective, where sexism doesn't play a role.

I do agree with you on the shaming though, that should never be okay or a part of feminism. The point of you, that feminism was only for women is also not true. It is also for everyone that doesn't fit into society's gender norms and patriarchy and gets opressed for that.

Thanks for this. I was a huge Nirvana fan back in the day, but I was so young that most of these messages pretty much flew over my head, and in the intervening years I never quite took the time to go back and hear them. It's not a stretch to learn that, coming out of the scene they did, they would share such views, but it certainly seems true that, for whatever reason, their legacy in popular culture hasn't included their passion for social justice and their role in bringing that discussion into the music mainstream.

you forgot to add this as one big one. On October 30th, 1992, Nirvana were booked to play a major show in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They were so big at that point in time that they just about sold-out José Amalfitani Stadium, which can hold nearly fifty thousand people. Prior to their set, Kurt Cobain witnessed the negative reception their hand picked opening act received, and was so incensed that he considered canceling the gig. Nirvana ultimately did perform that night, but they were sloppy and their set-list was more than a little unusual, as they purposely incorporated rare songs from their catalogue that they knew most of the audience wouldn’t be familiar with, including a couple of unreleased numbers. It ended up being one of their oddest shows, and it was all captured on videotape by a professional film crew.“When we played Buenos Aires, we brought this all-girl band over from Portland called Calamity Jane,” Kurt recalled. “During their entire set, the whole audience-it was a huge show with like sixty thousand people-was throwing money and everything out of their pockets, mud and rocks, just pelting them. Eventually the girls stormed off crying. It was terrible, one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, such a mass of sexism all at once. Krist, knowing my attitude about things like that, tried to talk me out of at least setting myself on fire or refusing to play. We ended up having fun, laughing at them (the audience). Before every song, I’d play the intro to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and then stop. They didn’t realize that we were protesting against what they’d done. We played for about forty minutes, and most of the songs were off Incesticide, so they didn’t recognize anything. We wound up playing the secret noise song (‘Endless, Nameless’) that’s at the end of Nevermind, and because we were so in a rage and were just so pissed off about this whole situation, that song and whole set were one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.” (from Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects)

Actually, legally, no they can't. Rape is the act of inserting a penis into an orifice without consent. Women can sexually assault, which is virtually the same crime, but they can't rape (bullshit I know). I think the focus is on women because they make up almost all sexual assault victims and are far more likely to be sexually assaulted than a male. Although yes I agree, men can be sexually assaulted to, and it is very hard for a man to come forward and report this. A more general approcah the subject would be great

You should definitely listen to Hole too. Courtney Love is a great feminist song writer that really captures the female experience in terms of sexual oppression, beauty standards etc. Her lyrics are very dark though, sometimes to the point of triggering. I remember listening to Nirvana as a kid and getting frustrated because I knew I liked it but didn't know why. I felt like I could almost -- but not quite -- understand it. In retrospect, I can say they absolutely got me thinking. Not so much about feminism (dyed-in-the-wool feminist from birth, intersectional before it became trendy, never ashamed to say it, so no awakening needed there) but about what I expected from the music I listened to. I mean, I still loved the 80s pop/rock/metal that shaped my early childhood, but I know I thought a lot more critically about music and its messages after Nirvana happened. I feel privileged to have seen them in their prime.

When I was young-(boy)-er, there was this guy who would sexually harass me without me knowing what harassment was. Obviously, he took advantage of my innocence since I was four at the time. He did this every time I visited his home because my mom was best friends with his mom and dad. Then there was this year when my mom told me about rape, I was eight at the time then we went to his home for a Christmas party and he lifted me up to the mirror and put his hand up my skirt and into my underwear. I knew something was wrong, my mom told me about it, and I managed to get out before it got worse, and I convinced him to let me go. When it came to the part where you talked about Polly and its story, I began crying. I was eight years old when it happened and when you said "Can you imagine how much strength that took?" Truth. One issue I had with Christopher Cross' Cobain bio was how the author glossed over the grunge musician's feminist politics, and his involvement with riot grrl punks, his love of the Breeders, and advocating for Patty Schemel as a replacement drummer for Hole. Like somehow those things didn't correlate to his affection for his mother, sister, daughter, and Courtney Love. Or even the fact that the R&R HoF performances by Nirvana were all headed by women--a fact Cobain probably would've loved. I feel like the person who's really upholding the feminist legacy for Cobain and Nirvana is Krist Novoselic--or the dude who was in Nirvana with him for the longest amount of time, and the one who still has a serious pulse on the PNW punk scene. Not that anyone else associated with Nirvana is terrible, but Novoselic has done some pretty amazing things to ensure Nirvana's legacy remains entangled with the parallel riot grrl scene.

Yep. I became a fan of the music as a child, but as an adult after reading books, watching interviews, quotes, etc. I also became a fan of Kurt as a person. He was a self admitted feminist, anyone doubting that should read or watch some of Kurt's interviews. He even played at Rock for Choice (pro choice benefit). He was against homophobia, racism, sexism, a lot of the issues important to so many today. Considering the amount of macho posturing bands did back in the 80s and 90s, I think it's awesome that Nirvana were so openly against that shit.

When I turned 14, an uncle of mine gave me 2 CDs. Nirvana's Nerermind and Pearl Jam's Ten. Yeah, Pearl Jam rocked and still does, but Nirvana just blew me away. It opened my musical world to punk and old indie bands and just felt like something that got me at the time. I have all their albums, Books and DVd and they are still my favorite band of all time. I knew they had songs that explored women's issues, but I never really stopped to think how it was such a big part of their music. Cheers for the video.

Thank u4 making this video. Kurt was so upset when the exact abusive men who he talked about started listening to his music & singing along. The song "In Bloom" was a song written about those men. The inside joke was meant to show how they sang along, not knowing that what they were singing about went against everything they were. Kurt's songwriting & strength in his beliefs should be taught in music classes everywhere.

I’m a firm believer in equal rights and treating not just women but everyone with respect. That’s my problem with the very extreme form that has transformed an idea of equality to an idea of superiority. In my opinion it tarnishes and disrespects the hard work done by people like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Stanton, and Lucretia Mott. I dunno I just think we should be kinder and more respectful of others. It’s something I’ve been working on myself and I have to say it’s so much nicer

@ that's not 'today's feminism', it's performative feminism. There are still may organizations that are actually trying to tackle the bigger issues like rape, feminzide, the fact that in many countries woman are still seen as their husband's property, the fact that in many countries it is still allowed to rape woman on the streets, legalizing abortion, Getting rid of the wage gap ect... Just because most of the shit you see on Twitter, buzzfeed, Facebook or where ever you get your Information about feminism from is kind of ridiculous, doesn't mean that's all there is to it.
@dennisdebro5444
@dennisdebro5444 2 роки тому
@ yeah see that's what I'm saying. That's not feminism. Feminism isn't 'hating men' it's wanting to be seen as an equal to them. Also feminists help with men's issues too. Like the fact that many male victims of SA are often looked down upon or told that they 'should've enjoyed it', like that's a thing that directly stems from the patriarchy and feminists are also against. Or that men's suicide rates are so high because they were always taught to supress their emotions. That's all things that feminism wants to stop, so it's not only for women's benefit, but for everyone's. Feminism isn't trying to take anything from men we just want the same things that men have for woman all across the globe. It's simple really, and beneficial to everyone. There'll always be extremists that are saying that they hate men, but every large movements has people like that. It's not what real feminism is though
