So here is an easy step-by-step on how to replace the fluid in your reduction gear. Well worth the effort on an older Leaf.

I did this fluid swap on a 2013 Leaf a little late, I had over 120k km on it, with Valvoline ULV ATF in July of 22 and went from a yearly average of 5.8 km/kWh to 6.6 mi/kWh. There/s a small clunk noise from the reduction gear when changing forward and reverse if it's warm because the fluid is so thin, but has been fine for 19k km.

Very interesting. I just bought a old Leaf. This car has under 50000 km on the clock. It is good looking both outside and inside. Battery health seems too be good also. I have seen many,many videos here on UKposts about this model. My thought goes to the possibility to make a battery change on it. But doesn’t know if any company here I Sweden do it? Or if I could do it myself maybe? Okey, have a great day.

The Aluminium crush washers can be re-used at least once, but should be annealed to soften them first. The trick is to mark them with black or blue Sharpie marker and then heat them until the Sharpie colour fades. Quenching makes no difference to the annealing.

@donsutherland5706
@donsutherland5706 3 роки тому
I watched this very helpful video and changed my oil yesterday. My 2015 Leaf has a third port on top of the gear case. I used the top port to add the oil, but you need a 10 mm hex bit socket, a universal drive and a couple of long extensions to get to it. For most people, the method in the video would be easiest. He mentions that his brakes might need attention. You can test for brake drag by stopping your car at a landmark on a slight hill leading to a flat section of road. With the car in neutral, release the brake and note how far the car coasts before it stops (a tree, driveway, utility pole, etc.). Do a baseline run after brake service and then every couple of months. Any loss of distance will indicate there is brake drag or possibly an underinflated tire or a bad bearing. The parking brake might need adjustment, too.

Just done this today to my 2011 leaf at 86k miles. No big chunks of metal but black old atf and their was a fair bit of metally sludge around the drain and fill bolts. Used a garden hose to snake it in. Hardest part was part was getting the on ramps on our driveway and then level using jack stand. Would be super easy with a full garage lift. Did this as part of a 3 parter where we were speccing out where to put a 2k ac electric heater and 3k hydronics kerosine/diesel heater to replace broken ptc heater. Ep2 for us is bumper off and dry fit heaters behind crush bumper and ep3 is plumb them in. Thanks for the video Dala. Helps to see all the steps obviously laid out.

Just changed the fluid on our 2013 Leaf with 85k miles on it. I was surprised how clean the fluid still was- it was still pink and this was first change. This video made the process pretty easy. I agree with the others in that the splash shield is hardest part of process in many ways. My splash shield was damaged with some tears that I repaired using some Gorilla tape. My tips are: 1. Use a long neck funnel if your existing funnel with hose doesn't reach. Mine did not so I was able to snake the funnel with hose closer to the fill plug and then use another funnel to reach that one. That worked fine and saved me a trip to buy a different funnel with hose. 2. oil your splash screen screws to reduce chances of rust- an easy thing to do 3. on the splash shield reinstall is to start from the rear because the shield folds in under the other shield. I did not do this initially and had to remove all the other fasteners and do again. I also used the Redline D6 as well. I'm a big Redline fan so that was an easy decision to go the Redline route. My total service time was about 2 hours- I got to talking with the neighbor and had the length issue with my original funnel with hose that needed resolution.

In the UK, a fellow writing into mynissanleaf.com said it costs 230 British pounds ($321 U.S. dollars) to get it done. In the U.S., I think a Nissan dealership will charge around $70 U.S. dollars. Thing is, in the U.K., they are just going to keep people away with prices like that. Even the $70 U.S. cost is too much in my opinion. This is an EASY job, and only 2 quarts of ATF fluid, 2 new aluminum crush washers, and 15 minutes labor. I've done mine and am about to do it once more.

I have a 2013 Leaf and it is now making a low "motor" noise. It was diagnosed as coming from the reduction gear. To do a complete change would be over 5000 dollars!! They did a fluid change and I hoped it would silence the noise, but it did not! What is going on, and what can I do???

What about the differential? This requires an oil that can handle high shear forces. An ATF oil cannot do that. I had a case with a Mercedes w126 ATF oil was also filled into the differential. After a few 100 km the differential was completely over.

A cheaper alternative is "Castrol Syntrans V FE", I use 75W-80 and It is rated as GL-4+, still contains a small amount of Sulfur, so no danger to any brass bushings. IT has friction reduceres and a carefull Guess, I Think I'm saving 2-2.5%. Another thing while you have the car off the grounds: check the wheel bearings. What is deemed good enough for a gasoline car, is worth improving. Take the bearings out and clean Them and then use Lithium Grease for bicycles. Then when you reassemble the hub, torque IT slightly less than the workshop manual Says, as initial torque is for new bearings, which need to seat. I use 90 Nm, and my not driven wheels spin for 40 seconds by hand! I do check my wheels off the ground twice a year and change Grease every year, and so far No surprises! Where this really makes a difference is in city driving, where Rolling resistance, is 3/4 of your drag. I can push the car with a single finger before the gearbox catches Up the slack, stopped on the Edge of a painted road stripe, the car Rolls off! My average current Went from 11A going around town to 7A, so my city Range is now Better than going 70kmh, which used to be where I got best Range.
@macmaniacal

clean them? I replaced mine because it was whining. So you have to press the hub off of the housing?
@Tore_Lund
@Tore_Lund 3 роки тому
@@macmaniacal Sorry, not talking about a Leaf, but I could pry the front bearings apart enough to clean Them out with kerosene, and then massage new Grease through the crack. And drive axle bearings, can't be seperated and need to be pressed out, so They need to have the seal removed to regrease.
