This gm 4104 from the early 50’s has a serious air brake leak that needs immediate attention. Then the bus breaks down multiple times on it’s was back in for its scheduled service appointment a month later. When the clutch goes out it gets stranded on the highway.

@@kevindahlberg7753 Look up the channel “Just Rolled In” and you will see what I mean. It would blow your mind how many people are completely clueless as to what is or isn’t safe. I had a guy scrape into my shop thinking it was an auto shop (it’s a machine shop) with a front wheel missing. He told us “the wheel got wonky” about 30 miles back, but he kept going. The wheel broke off and went into oncoming traffic about 10 miles back and he saw no reason to stop. He caused a fatality accident and didn’t think he should stop. Yea, aside from the accident and fleeing charges, he was held responsible for the damage to the road as well. I talked to the wrecker driver that picked the car up and he said that he sees 3 or 4 cars a week that are almost that bad. And I live in a small, rural county with not that much traffic. He said it was way worse when he worked in the suburbs.
@brianburns7211
@brianburns7211 Рік тому
@@kevindahlberg7753 You’re right. These busses are designed as commercial vehicles. The owners have them reclassified as RVs, but the owners have not been trained on doing proper pretrip inspections, so they don’t notice slack adjusters out of adjustment, bad air bags, or warn suspension and steering parts. Someone mentioned about many cars being in poor shape. The difference is that a bus is many times bigger and heavier.

@hydro2wheel
@hydro2wheel Рік тому
There is a HUGE difference between mechanics and technicians. Mechanics have an inherent knowledge of mechanical devices and they seek to not only replace what has failed, they also have the skills to investigate why it failed and repair what caused the problem to begin with. Technicians (no fault of their own, it is the new world training they received now-a-days) only repair/ replace what has failed according to the service manuals and flow charts and/or what the digital scanning devices tell them is wrong. Getting to the root cause of mechanical failure is sadly becoming a lost art. Scott and Tyler are most excellent mechanics!

I am surprised with the state o that clutch you managed to get it to hold enough to drive up the hill. He is lucky he stopped by for a couple of days early so you got the most dangerous stuff fixed before his visit to his daughters and also got an idea of how much you would need to do when he came in or his appointment. Also glad to see you have a bit of a wait time for appointments meanbs you have got many people coming around either from word of mouth (which i expect is the main way people get to know about you or from watching you here) or from any advertising you have done since getting the shop up. Either way it shows that you dont have a worry about is it a money making venture or not. That is pleasing to see that with your quality of repairs and complete check of all busses /RVs that visit makes not only the owners safer on the road but everyone else also. The idea of passing on your knowledge by getting the owners to put some skin in the game and help out is also good as it lowers the cost for them a bit and also helps them learn what to look at regularly and to understand these things are always going to need maintance like all vehicles but these are expensive to do big repairs on but not so bad if you keep at the regular maintance.

On the pre-trip inspections one of the things we always looked for was rust on the lugs and oil leaks on the wet hubs. You can't see those problems if they are all covered up. Luckily, the coach company I worked for had certification inspections every 6 months and mechanics 24/7. It drives me absolutely nuts to see folks who have lug covers and hub covers.

Scott, you remember as I do (before Tyler's time) a long time ago when states had mandatory annual vehicle inspections (not just for commercial vehicles but all vehicles) imposed by the states. If you passed, they placed a sticker on your windshield and you could renew your license plates, however if your vehicle didn't pass you didn't get the sticker and could not renew license plates until the vehicle passed safety inspection. I personally want this brought back again to force vehicle owners to keep their equipment in safe condition. Anyhow story short, I resigned (walked away) from my 38-year trucking career two weeks ago and sold my tractor/trailer and equipment four days later. I'll be in Mt.Pleasant this coming Monday afternoon for two-weeks looking for a new place to live between Columbia and Summertown. I'll worry about a new job once I have all my stuff moved down there. I'm not planning on driving trucks but will maintain my CDL's just in case. I'm done with Indiana. Since I see the Hercules tires in this video a word of warning. We were just on a long road trip when an 8 year old Hercules tire blew out on us. Plenty of tread left, just that the tire came apart. Upon further inspection we saw evidence of other tires starting to separate near the tread. Our RV is parked in the interior rows of a commercial storage facility, so while it is technically still exposed, the tires are well shaded from UV exposure. Inspect your tires regularly folks. We could have avoided a scary situation and much extra expense.
