In this video I do a 6 month review my OEX Bobcat 1 tent.
When I got this tent back in May 2020 I made a 'first impressions' video. In this follow-up video I look over my initial comments to see if my feelings about the tent have changed. They have a bit; I have some criticisms, however overall I think it's a fantastic little tent!

Great review and agree with all your points raised! I am a huge Bobcat fan, and love using mine.. I also unzip the top of my door and have a letterbox style flap at the top to look out of it, that door design is great 👌 I have just bought a Lanshan 2 to try out to have a little more room but a little less weight and pack size, but will still have a use for the Bobcat.

It's interesting to see this model - it looks very much like it was based on the Coleman Viper. I've got that and have been fond of it, though I don't do a lot of camping, but sadly it's deteriorated due to age. The Viper does have a toggle to attach the back of the inner to the outer, and that's quite important for creating the space. Sounds like the Bobcat missed that out?
@JH-ne7mr
@JH-ne7mr 3 роки тому
Thanks for the update. I bought my own based on your recommendation and demonstration and I've loved it! Completely agree about the back of the inner needing an extra toggle attaching it the outer. It would make it much less claustrophobic when the inner is zipped up. Stay safe dude!

Excellent previews of yours on this tent..Thank you..👏🏻👍...So i went and got one for my 630 mile South west coastal path walk in July . Even better I just got from Go outdoors in sale for £59 ..Well pleased. Few big things fr me : 1) Its fly first..2)I love the huge entrance once the door rolled up , great for seeing the awesome coastal views 3) the huge vestuble area for cooking .. Happy Days.. I last did the SWCP ten years ago in the Snugpack Ionosphere , but i got wet putting it up on ocassions as its not fly first, also its bad for cooking making brew due to no vestibule space/cover.. Finally not much room to get dressed, and was like sleeping in a coffin..In summary Not good for living in for 6 weeks ..🥴..

Currently they’re the same price at blacks at the mo £85 with discount code, with only 200g difference the point about brushing the walls swung it for me. @My24hradventure 3 роки тому
Thanks Phill. From what I've read/head the Berghaus rates a bit better than the Bobcat in terms of the living space. My only issue with it is the bright red colour. I was in the Bobcat at 32km winds on a hill top. Ok, not the strongest of gales but nevertheless in these conditions the tent remained rock solid for over 12 hours, and I felt secure in it. I've used the bobcat perhaps a dozen times now along the south west coastal path and your review is spot on. The inner tub at the rear always brushes up against the outer tent which is an issue especially when there is condensation. It is a great tent, kept me warm and dry on plenty of occasions. However, I could be ready for an upgrade to something with a little bit more room.

Good review... honest, I like that. You won't be disappointed with the MSR Elixir1... mine survived Dartmoor in continuous rain and wind, and although someone commented on here about the 1500 HH I don't think that's an issue really if Dartmoor was anything to go by, the tiny leak I had was user set up error and driving rain up under the fly... it really was nothing to worry about, no condensation at all or leaks from the tops or sides. It was your original Bobcat review and subsequent camp-out video that led me to buying my own Bobcat (I'd actually already bought the OEX phoxx 1v2 and took it back to 'GO' for an exchange). Such a great tent, I love the blade design, it works for me cus I'm a 'sit and stare out the porch kinda guy' - which you can't do with most tunnel style backpacking tents. Weirdly though my Bobcat only has a left hand pocket on the outer door and none on the right... design fault? I just had a look at the MSR Elixir one, it does look pretty tasty (though slightly less stealth). Have you looked at the Decathalon Forclaz Trek 900 one man? I think it'd be right up your street - it is along similar lines again to the Bobcat and Elixir 1 tents, affordable mid-price and 1.3kg, I'm very tempted.

I've been thinking about the MSR carbon reflex, but just haven't hit upon 'click to buy' yet. Shortly after buying the bobcat I bought the Onetigris Tangram which I love, although planning a couple of mods to make it more palacial soon. Because of the upside down v shape, it lends itself well to the incorporation of a tarp, and with double vestibule you can pee out the side without your gear. Another thing which I've not tried, is if you are doing a woodland camp, you can set it up with a ridge line instead of trekking sticks.

Good review. I used mine for along time, sw coast path, I tied a couple of amazon fake msr needles to front porch and back, and could peg it up. also found it versatile in small spaces, I cut porch ground sheet out to save weight, I dunno if you could modify it, at the back. You don't want contact with back part of tent. someone threw my tent poles away, when wild camping, idiot clears up area. so I had alot problems cutting them to fit, if the pole is not tight the back contacts the inner, it's very well designed, and then eventually amazon poles I bought started to bend too much, in storms, I bought mosquito net, was gonna try to cut weight down, the outer is pretty good on it's own.

The MSR Elixir looks good, it's a shame it's not lighter though. Seems like it's a similar weight to the bobcat. The extra 20cm of length would be nice though for sure. Did you look into zpacks duplex?
@My24hradventure
@My24hradventure 3 роки тому
The Zpacks look awesome but they're a bit out of my budget. True, the MSR is a little on the heavy side but ultra-light isn't my priority at the moment as I'm not covering long distances. I just park up, have a bit of an explore for an hour or two and then pitch up. So for me I think the MSR will be fine. Cheers mate, thanks for watching, Jonathan 👍

completely agree with an extra tie out point of the inner to the outer where the outer has the black triangle! Assuming machine stitching a loop to the outer under the black triangle would minimise water seeping through the stitching but not really sure, maybe there's seam glue you can apply?

Did anybody ever do this? I have an idea… You can get self adhesive tie out points (about £6 a pair). You could put one on the inside of the fly and attach a small cord / strap with toggle. Then fit one of the little toggle loops (basically a reinforced hole) into the inner. Pop the toggle through the hole and boom, the inner is held, but nothing too permanent.

Not a bad tent really for the money, but it does have a few shortcomings! I’ve totally ditched my inner tent - just using it as a tarp shelter, due to the lack of room inside with that silly flappy inner that sags down on you while your zipped in during the night.. It’s a totally different space now without the inner fitted, much more room all-round. Now lighter too by 600g, total weight is now only 1.3kg. I have also cut out a tarp to the shape of the inner, to use a groundsheet, and managed to mod the peg out points so that theirs now no gap at the bottom of the fly to the ground.. Very happy indeed with it now, no more feeling claustrophobic! 👍🏻

I've had this tent for over a year now. Used it many times and while it's a good little tent for under £100, there's a few niggles. First the good points, excellent VFM, and msterial including zips of good quality, good sized vestibule, solid, resists strong winds, very waterproof and stayed dry in heavy downpours and very warm, making it effectively a 4 season tent. On the downside, l'm no wuss, but the pole is a bugger to fit, and needs to be a fraction shorter. Next space, there's insufficient pull outs to pull the outer tent away from the inner and the inner constantly brushes against your face. I'm a shade under 6 foot tall and found it a bit cramped. In conclusion, not a bad tent at all for the money but if your over, say 5' 9" l would look elsewhere.
