Looks awesome! Move the "heater" closer and you can feed it from the tub! Also, the less excess piping the less you have to heat it and insulate it to keep the warmth in.

Excellent off grid hot tub. I suggest drilling some air holes through the bottom of your copper stove and insulate your water pipes. I made a similar tub up the mountain in BC. I placed the fire directly under the old cast iron tub and had a similar foam cover. It took me all day of feeding the fire and shoveling fresh into the tub to get the tub full and nice and hot. You are right it is a great bath though! Now I always have a 40 gallon canner full of hot water from fresh snow sitting on top of the fire stove inside my cottage we use for all our washing.

Swap the pipes over so hot water is poured into the bottom and rises, cools, then is drawn back to be heated again. I know the heat makes the water rise in the coil but that force should be enough to force the hot water down a slight angle down to the bottom of the tub, and hopefully that makes a more even temperature. :)

A similar contraption was used to heat water for showers and baths in outback Australia called a "donkey " which was an empty drum on its side. A fire was lit under it and it had a cold inlet pipe going into the bottom of the drum and the hot water outlet pipe at the top. I worked on a cattle station when I was younger and it was my job to get the fire going every day to heat the water. Most of these remote cattle and sheep stations are still off grid and have to generate their own electricity so back in the day they relied on diesel generators to run households and coldrooms to keep food fresh. Delivery of diesel was hugely expensive so the savings of heating water was made by the innovative "donkey". Nowadays most stations use their own solar array to generate power and gas to heat water so that old outback innovation is obsolete. Seeing you so excited by your contraption was a bit of nostalgia for me. Thank you for being inventive and willing to have a red hot go at your off- grid experience and for sharing that with us 👍🏻

You are an absolute delight. My hot water pipe, in the slab of my house, started leaking last night. I am without water, waiting for a portion of floor and wall to be cut out tomorrow to dry. I have no running water in house. Will have repiping in attic. I took a relaxing bath in a teacup today so watching you in the bath was pure joy. Wishing for my own tiny house right now. Cheers. You can fill the bottom of the water heater with sand to keep the coils from getting burnt out and to keep it warm for a while after the water goes out

You’re like a survivalist getting excited about making fire with your bare hands. So great! I totally get it, it’s supposed to work but it also seems a bit fantastic. And the fact that it works is mind blowing! I’m looking forward to seeing it look all pretty but I’m glad you went ahead and posted your success. Dirty or clean, I would’ve gotten in the hot water too!!! After all, I’ve been swimming in lake water and in the river, and even in the ocean. Not all water is bath water clear but that doesn’t mean it’s horrible. It’s going to be so relaxing when it’s all fixed up with pretty stuff. I’m jealous!

See if you can find an old, wood-fired bath stove somewhere (Ebay classifieds/scrap dealers). Then build a small hut around the bathtub and the bath stove and have a bathroom module next to your tiny house. And for bathing water, you collect rainwater with gutters at the tiny house and the bath house.

Three hours sounds about right. We stayed in the desert at a cabin one time, and they had a 10' galvanized stock tank with a submerged wood stove in it (so bigger set up all around) and it took about three hours to get the water hot. We LOVED it! We did have to keep the stove going, but we made dinner and had cocktails in the meantime, so we didn't really bother about the time it took. So, brilliant! I wish you much (more) fun and luck with this!

New subscriber from NC, US🇺🇸 Watched the time-lapse build, & now I'm hooked! Thx for the hot tub idea - very ckever; however, someone must maintain the fire! You could also try putting in an outdoor shower, somehow heating the water the same way. Make it out of wood, insulate it, use green board instead of sheetrock, add tile, put in a decorative door w/double paned glass, frosted on inside. Make the door highly sealed, then put a plexiglass top on the little wooden structure (you could had portals) so it's open to the sunshine & the sky! The steam would heat the whole thing, so it'd be ok to have the glass not insulated. At least, I think it could work. You could then put a put a seal on the bottom, add the pipes & connect to a shower head. Dunno about hot/cold handles??? Add a drain pipe that takes the dirty water & feeds it into a tank (or the ground if you use biodegradable dhampoo/soap). Add a layer of rocks to cover the pipes, then add slats of wood that have just a little bit of gaps, & it'll give the illusion that the water just seeps into the ground. Will look more natural & rustic, too! You could build different sizes of drums/barrels to hold the coils. What about coal? It would burn longer, right? I have a million ideas - watch lots of these vids:) Never seen an outdoor shower, tho. Just an idea:)

If you had a cast iron tub you can just build the fire under the tub, that's what we did when we lived on property with no running water. We used a piece of wood with holes drilled in it to keep from burning our butt on the hot cast iron. :)

Sick video!, Couple ideas, why dont you shorten the pipes leading to and from the bath because heat would be escaping from them as the water travels through them, or insulate them, also to make the fire hotter and the water heat up faster, make a lid for the fire box that u can open when putting in wood and close when the fire is stoked to retain and trap heat. Amazinf video and i kinda wanna make somthing similar now! Cheers eli

To me that black means water mixing with ash. You should check to see if the coils have perforations, and if the connectors on the fire side leaked through expansion. Try tightening the nuts when warm. I love your style. I love your creativity and enthusiasm on your projects.
