Finally a Greek teaching the pronunciation of Greek letters. Shocking how the USA and UK websites have got it wrong and still pretend to know the actual pronunciation. So glad I chanced upon this video. Going to take me a whole lot of retraining.

indeed! But if you would have studied ancient Greek in Greece, you would also have learned a different pronunciation than abroad. Out of Greece they use the "Erasmus pronunciation" for Ancient Greek, which is not used in Greece, and a big discussion between Professors Ancient Greek in various countries :-) Anyway, about the modern Greek there is no discussion, it is what you hear in the video. kalimera, for people not speaking or learning Greek, it is normal they have no idea how "omikron " is actually pronounced in Greek, and many do not even realize it is a Greek letter. @OmiloHellas
@OmiloHellas 3 роки тому
Kalisprea Jona, we wish you good luck with the Greek Alphabet. For sure your stay in Greece will be so much nicer when you can read Greek. About your questions, the I, H and Y have exactly the same pronunciation, so no difference, but the spelling is different. So depending where the letter is in the word, or in which other combination of letters it is used, you will need one of the three...But do not worry about it for the time being..just remember they have the same pronunciation. (like in English "eat" and "meet"...same pronunciation, different spelling...)

@@OmiloHellas I am mainly interested in the Greek language as it relates to the Greek New Testament but the correct pronunciation is critical for the kids. I live in a town called Ypsilanti. Many cities and towns are named after Indian (native American) tribes, chiefs, etc. ( and so on). A lot of the rivers and lands are the names given by the Indians. I thought Ypsilanti was an Indian name. Boy was I wrong. There is an American movie called my Greek wedding. Have you seen it? It is really funny.

@@OmiloHellas I am embarrassed to ask, but I am going to anyway. Would it be possible for you to make a fast simple video of you reading John 3: 16, 17 so we can memorize it in the Greek. @OmiloHellas 4 роки тому
@@rlund3 no problem to ask, but this is not something in our field, or our interest,. SO I am sorry to tell you that we will not. However, I am sure you can find a lot of Greeks close to your town, related to the Greek church, that can help you out. About your previous comment, yes of course we know the movie, which most Greeks have seen. However, this movie is about a Greek-American familie in the USA, who usually tend to be a bit more traditional than in Greece nowadays. The English "th" sound is the Thita ( θ), and the delta is in between "d" and "th"...needs practice, but there is a difference. @aggelosn.6846
@aggelosn.6846 3 роки тому
In greek it is βήτα and ζήτα. The vowel "η" makes the same sound with the greek vowel "ι". In English, this sound can be depicted either with "e" (as in the word "become") or with "i" (as in the word "hit"). So both are correct. However, foreigners use to pronounce these as beta/zeta with "e" sounding as in the word "help" which is wrong

No, they are two complete different letters, and pronounced differently. However, for a non-Greek, it might sound the same...however, when pronouncing the letters, the place of your tongue is at a different point, and for Greeks there is never any confusion between those 2 letters
