Your deer/coyote footage reminds me of the unexpected results of reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone. They found that the riparian corridors started to grow back much faster than the population decline in the grazers would have predicted. After some study, they realized that the deer and elk would just graze without a threat, but if wolves were merely in the area they would spend a considerable amount of time with their heads up, watching the wolves, and not eating. This gave the brush and grasses a chance to grow and put on the toughened shoots and branches that grazers don't like.
@Wildrosesmyl
@Wildrosesmyl Рік тому
That's because the Gray Wolf is a Keystone Species. Without predation, another critical Keystone Species, beavers, habitat was eaten and trampled by undulates. So the loss of TWO Keystone Species changed the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in ways that it could no longer support many of the other native species to the area.
@julietvrensburg
@julietvrensburg Рік тому
I am surprised they were surprised by this. The ecosystem needs top predators. If they aren't any, then the animals will just eat all the bushes and grass... An ecosystem is balanced and needs all animals.
@jscarborough9928
@jscarborough9928 Рік тому
@Juliet Van Rensburg the surprise was the degree to which the browsing was affected. They had predicted that browsing would be reduced proportionally with the reduction of herbivore population. They found that individual surviving herbivores ate significantly less than than they would have without the presence of wolves. It was an important finding, because one of the arguments against reintroduction of wolves was to point out that they wouldn't really eat that many deer and elk and would, therefore have little effect on the health of the riparian corridors.

It's more so that they spend less time grazing in one area with predators around, they keep moving. It's not that they spend more time with their heads up

The fact that all 10 baby ducks survived to maturity is a testament to the great pond you’ve built. They had enough resources to live and grow and do so safely. Great work! I wish more people took this same approach instead of always pushing wildlife to the edge with nowhere to survive. Does have the ability to self abort if the area becomes hostile, dangerous, or resources become scarce. As an act of self preservation, they self abort until next mating season. Having 3 fawns mean resources exceeded plentiful and the environment was as good as it gets if she birthed 3 babies.

I’m in the UK. A year ago, I built a small pond 2.3 x 3m. In my garden. I was staggered at the amount of wildlife that visited the pond. Imo, THE best way to attract wildlife is to provide a water source. The pond is a wildlife pond with no fish as I only wanted to attract insects and amphibians. However much more was attracted. I live in a medium size town in Hertfordshire UK. Great video btw.

@formicapple2 I agree, im out in Southern California where they complain about drought every year but if everyone dug a small pond it would be a huge resource just as back up water for plants and animals. In India they are doing tons of permaculture water projects to reverse desertification and ponds are one of the most common. Every year when we get crazy rains I just watch all that fresh water flow out to the ocean from where I live near the port, its disgusting how much just flows right out. Our modern society isnt conditioned to think about conservation and natural balance, especially if you live in a city or urban environment.

@@al-aeynani yes that's true but there is so much land all over America and the world that isn't being utilized for anything. You can collect wild seeds or see if your county has seed workshops or other enthusiasts that could help you out with this and keep the costs down. If you have the budget- look into creating a snake hibernaculum as well. Great work, very interesting to see all these animal clips. Cheers

The content of this channel is therapeutic. The outdoor aquarium and zoo, full moon time lapses, croaking frogs and George Jones are my favorites. I imagine since the environment is resource abundant, none of the animals are put into hyper survival mode and this is why they get along so well. As if I’m watching a balanced, living utopia, nothing synthetic, just a rearrangement of existing materials. Thank you for sharing!

Isn't it amazing how when you let nature do it's own thing, within reason, that it often manages to balance itself out? Well done Sir.

This is the coolest thing I think I have ever seen. I would love to have a huge piece of land just to be able to make it a wildlife sanctuary like this and enjoy nature in my back yard. Very interesting to see how the animals seem to respect each other on your property... Except maybe the owls, but even they seem to understand after a while that some others, like the Mallard Duck, are permanent residence as well. Very cool.

I love the idea of people building small conservation areas like this. It's unrealistic to expect even small-scale "deindustrialization" of developed countries, so this may be the best we get. Great stuff!

Always love tuning in to see how this is going. Another tree you could consider adding are pecan trees, they should do really well in your climate but will take a long time to mature. I can't imagine what this place will look like in another 20 years with everything grown up, keep it up!
